A & A Truck and Auto Center,Inc., (trade name AATAC) wasincorporated in 1978 by James C.Allison Jr. The business waslocated at 3012 Little Rock Roadin Charlotte, North Carolina. The major business at that timewas auto and truck sales. Thebusiness was actually a continuationof the A & A Used Car andParts, founded by James C.Allison, Sr. in 1961. A & A alsobought, installed, and sold dumpbodies, hoists, tow truck and carrierbodies at that time. The carrierbodies were designed by Mr.Allison and manufactured for A& A Truck and Auto Center by adump body manufacturer andsold under the trade nameAATAC, an acronym for the legalname.AATAC’s tow truck bodieswere manufactured by a nationalmanufacturer until 1982. In1982, Mr. Allison designed a newA A T A CC O M P A N Y H I S T O R Ywheellift and had these wrecker/ wheellift units manufactured forAATAC by a local manufacturer. When AATAC’s contract withits carrier manufacturer expiredin 1983, a plant was leased at8600 Wilkinson Boulevard inCharlotte to begin manufactureof AATAC carriers. The firstcarrier units were produced byAATAC within 60 days. Fourmodels were initially introducedand were extremely wellreceived in the market place. In 1985, Mr. Allison inventedand patented a new stylewheellift and began manufacturingthe new design, along withtow trucks and carriers, at theWilkinson Boulevard facility.Since that period in 1985,AATAC’s units have been manufacturedin its own plant. Landwas purchased by Mr. Allison in1987, specifically for a new plantsite. Construction began in 1988.The new home of AATAC wascompleted and occupied in thefall of 1989. The new facility, which includes administrativeoffices and manufacturing plantis located at 4000 Sam WilsonRoad in Charlotte, North Carolina. The new plant was designedto allow production to triplelevels achieved in the previousplant. AATAC’s product lineshave increased from the originalfour models to now more thanone hundred. This facility site isapproximately 8.5 acres and theAllison’s have approximately 6.6additional acres adjoining theplant site for future expansion.AATAC’s business has grownsteadily and survived the downturn in the economy in the early1990’s while other towing andrecovery manufacturers did not.AATAC also chose not to be apart of the industry consolidationin the 1990’s and is still ownedand operated by the Allison family. The Allison’s continue tofocus their efforts in manufacturingon superior quality and durabilityas well as customer satisfaction.AATAC’s Sam Wilson Road Manufacturing Facilitywww.aatac.comAATAC HISTORORY 3
