The key themes of the Hull MBAManaging in a Global ContextManaging in OrganisationsPersonal and Professional DevelopmentManaging in a Global Context sets managementdevelopment firmly within an international framework,encompassing issues of personal effectiveness, culturaldiversity, management thinking, organisational life andindividuals as change agents.Participants are encouraged to examine their ownexperiences, focusing on the development of selfawarenessand the skills required for managing inorganisations characterised by change and uncertainty.These include team building, leadership and negotiation.You will also have the opportunity to learn anotherlanguage through use of our excellent resources.Broad issues of ethics and sustainability are now fixtureson the business agenda, and many organisations aredriving forward corporate social responsibility (CSR) asan integral part of business strategy.Through the MBA you will develop a critical andmultidisciplinary understanding of CSR that addresseshow to accommodate social and environmental concernsin management decision making; stakeholder analysisand related issues; and cultural-diversity issues andemployment practices.Managing RelationshipsHuman Resource ManagementThe Economic EnvironmentManaging Relationships focuses on internal andexternal stakeholders, bringing together strategy andpractice in the management of human resources with anunderstanding of the wider business environment and itsimpact on business performance.Participants undertake a broad survey of the businessenvironment as it impinges on business decision making,covering social, technological, political, legal andeconomic factors. This equips them to assess the relativeimpacts of such factors at any given time and use thisinformation to inform strategic decision making.A key outcome of this theme is the ability to apply aneconomic perspective to a wide variety of issues andproblems, ranging from company-level pricing decisionsto the international effects of exchange rates.You will also explore key aspects of managing people inthe workplace, in business and service organisations,exploring possible strategies for improving internal andexternal relationships to achieve strategic objectives.Managing the Value ChainMarketingOperations ManagementManaging the Value Chain explores key trends inmarketing and the management of business operations,focusing on how firms can add value by providingproducts and services to meet the needs of the market.We examine the critical importance of logistics andsupply chain management for modern businesses bylinking theoretical developments with contemporarypractices to assess how optimum performance can berealised, in terms of the organisation as a whole and itsconstituent parts, developing sophisticated strategies toachieve this goal.Key marketing concepts and aspects of applied marketingpractice encourage participants to develop a criticalperspective on how marketing activities build strategicand sustainable value, resulting in long-term competitiveadvantage in specific markets.Both the marketing and the logistics functions requirecollaboration and relationships with other functionalareas of the firm, and these relationships are exploredwithin the context of a value chain – benefiting thecustomer and the company.Managing KnowledgeAccounting and Finance for ManagersResearch MethodsManaging Knowledge investigates the identification ofrelevant knowledge, how best to acquire it (and how tocope when it is not available), and how to put it to use sothat it genuinely contributes to the analysis of complexproblems and to effective decision making.Participants are introduced to research methods that arecommonly used in business and management, and weemphasise the crucial importance of data collection,construction and interpretation in shedding light uponparticular problems.This also provides a platform for the development ofunderstanding about the selection and design of researchmethods, giving due consideration to the researchquestion(s), contextual constraints, and issues of ethicsand validity.The nature and value of financial information is alsoexplored, so that managers can communicate effectivelywith specialist members of their team through theirunderstanding of financial information and those aspectsof finance most relevant to the management ofcorporations.www.hull.ac.uk/hubs The Hull MBA 7
