Other features of the programmeManaging StrategicallyManaging HolisticallyStrategic ManagementManaging Strategically builds a perspective that takesaccount of the business organisation as a whole, itspurpose and strategic development, and one that informsmanagerial decision making.Participants explore the complexity and richness ofdebates in and around strategic management, developingthe ability to ask critical questions – rather than seekingready techniques or certain answers.Topics examined include the nature of and approaches tostrategy; corporate mission, responsibility andgovernance; customer analysis and market segmentation;innovation and dynamic competition; and whetherstrategy matters.Attention is also paid to strategic decisions, and themotives behind these, including those of building andapplying resources; cost leadership and differentiation;integration; diversification; outsourcing; strategicalliances; globalisation; and organisational change.Participants draw on their own experiences to considerhow effective decision making can also involve intuitionand the balancing of different functional perspectives inorder to resolve complex problems.This theme introduces holistic thinking as a tool to defineand solve problems, effect change and developorganisational learning. The material benefits from theBusiness School’s distinctive expertise in systemsapproaches to management decision making.Optional modulesOptional modules enable participants to focus onparticular interests by deepening and broadening theirunderstanding in a range of diverse and regularlyupdated areas. Through thisyou will gain a valuable cultural experience, enlarge yourfamiliarity with international business contexts andpractices, and widen your networks and circle ofcolleagues and friends.The international study option will also includeorganisational visits at the overseas location. Thesecompany visits will be hosted by a fellow MBA participantat his or her workplace, ensuring a shared context forhost and visitor and fostering comparative perspectivesamong the Hull MBA community.8The Hull MBA
MBA timetableThe academic year at the University of Hull starts inSeptember. Following a dedicated induction programme,the first teaching semester runs until December with thesecond running from January to the end of May. Duringthat time, MBA participants complete their taughtmodules organised around a number of integratedthemes and delivered through lectures, presentations andgroup discussion.The summer period from June to August is spent workingindependently, with academic supervision, on the MBADissertation.The MBA DissertationThe ,000-word dissertation provides you with anopportunity to carry out a significant piece of research inan area of personal interest related to the world ofbusiness and management.Company-based projectYour dissertation can be in the form of a company-basedproject for a real organisation, and such projects haveincluded research into HRM and relocation, market share,costing, maintenance of machinery, biofuels andmarketing material. Participants are supported by adedicated academic supervisor during the dissertationperiod (June–August).Career development and networkingopportunitiesThe Hull MBA equips managers for career progressionthrough delivering enhanced knowledge of functionalareas, an overview of how these interact in theinternational business environment and high-leveltransferable skills, such as communication, analysis,problem solving, teamwork and professionalpresentation.Programme content is complemented by careerdevelopment opportunities, including our careermanagement programme and activities coordinated bythe school’s dedicated World of Work team. The teamconnects participants and employers, advertisingappropriate job opportunities and providing advice onworking in the UK and overseas.This support does not end on graduation. We encourageall our students to keep in touch with us after they havefinished their studies by joining our global community of9,000 graduates, who work in roles from seniormanagers in functional areas to chief executives inorganisations including Hilton International, Rolls-Royce, KPMG, Ernst & Young, Ericsson, HSBC andUNICEF.Our graduates are invited to take advantage of the variedand stimulating networking opportunities andmanagement development programmes that we offer,continuing their personal and professional development.MBA participants further benefit from the school’saffiliation with AMBA, a worldwide contact network,around two-thirds of whose members are seniormanagers, board directors or CEOs.
