TSG covers a total surface area of 80,000 m², has2 on-terminal rail tracks, a circa 600 metre long quay, a draft of 11 to 12m and oneRo-Ro berth. The terminal offers maximum security, including security guardsand video surveillance, and complies fully with the ISPS anti-terrorism code. TSG hasapproximately 70 employees and achieved a turnover of 12 million Euros in 2009.CUSTOMER PROFILECompany• Terminal San Giorgio S.r.l(TSG)• Genoa Port, ItalyIndustry• Operations – port terminalMotorola Products• 9 AP-5181 Outdoor AccessPoints (dual-radio withsector based directedantennae to ensurequayside network coverage)• 4 MC9090-G RFID HandheldComputers (for mobileoperators)• 4 VC6096 Mobile Computers(for in-vehicle use)Partner• Integra S.r.l. and CAP S.p.a.

CASE STUDYMotorola’s AP5181 Outdoor Access Points and Mobile Computers improve efficiency and capacity at Terminal San Giorgio S.r.l.“We previously used paper-based systems to managethe processing of containers at the port of Genoa. Thesesystems were time consuming and subject to human-error.We have transformed our ability to manage operations bydeploying an automated system to track and trace goodsfrom the moment they arrive to processing and onwardshipment. The technology comprises a Motorola wirelessnetwork deployed throughout the terminal for real-timevoice and data communications and RFID technologywith handheld computers used as scanners so our teamscan scan RFID tags on containers. The technology helpsus process more goods and deliver improved service tocustomers by providing accurate insights into the statusof their shipments.”Antonio Suriano,Direttore Generale, Terminal San Giorgio S.r.l.The challengeTo bring the Terminal San Giorgio operations up to dateTSG used a manual paper based system to manage operations that was time consumingand not cost effective. To become a leading terminal operator TSG required a modern, innovative intermodal container management system along the whole length of thesupply chain to improve productivity, container tracking, throughput and the service itcould offer to its customers.Application(s)• Real time container management along the wholeintermodal supply chain: through RFID Container tracking, which uploads the position of the containers in transit betweenthe terminal and their intermediary or final destination to theoperational management system, Wifi communication and GPS• Real time container train location: through the VC6096integrated GPS• RFID Tracking and Tracing system: provides a record ofcontainer movements in case of queries or disputes• RFID electric seals: ensure container goods integrity• Webservice support and MESH outdoor wirelessnetwork: for a reliable, high power, flexible radio frequencycover across the whole terminal for data, voice and imagetransfer• SOA Architecture: allows for time scaled and adaptableproceduresBenefits• Enhanced productivity: through significant time saving ofloading and unloading container ships, real time communicationwith workers, customs officers and transport operators, effective real time tracking of containers and orders and abilityto plan and optimise the means of transport• Increased capacity: capacity is increased as a result ofimproved efficiency and throughput, while still respecting theconstantly evolving regulatory standards• Reduction in operational errors: a faster and more accuratethroughput leads to improved customer satisfaction• Overall reduction in operational costs: the reliable modernsystem delivers tangible return on investment• A more user friendly system: the users appreciate theergonomic, robust design, the technical strengths and reliablehigh performance of the productsThe project presented various interesting challenges. Integra was particularly awareof two key issues presented by establishing radio-frequency coverage across a vastoutdoor area. Firstly, installing equipment which needed to continually provide 365ggthroughout the year at heights of 30 to 35 metres irrespective of the elements. Andsecondly in terms of the security of the radio-frequency transmitted data. The selection processThe project was conceived in collaboration with CAP S.p.a., who are specialistsin services, products, projects and development of IT software business solutions.CAP has over 30 years experience in the Italian market.CAP and Integra understood the need for an efficient, technologically advancedsolution supported by high quality hardware, ideally all from one supplier. Togetherthey proposed a 360° system to TSG, including management software together witha real time data collection system and a very innovative MESH configured wirelessinfrastructure. The Motorola wireless network and handheld computer products wereselected as part of this solution principally for their reliability, high performance, robustness and suitability. During the testing phase Integra ensured that the users fullyunderstood all the practical benefits the new processes and functionalities would bringto the management of containers across the terminal.PAGE 2

CASE STUDYMotorola’s AP5181 Outdoor Access Points and Mobile Computers improve efficiency and capacity at Terminal San Giorgio S.r.l.The solutionIt took approximately six months to design the radiofrequencyinfrastructure, install the wider managementsystem and ensure the handheld computers were fullyoperational. There was then a two-month testing phasebefore full project roll out. Individual issues such asthe secure radio-frequency coverage were suitablyaddressed by installing sector specific directionalantennae and using the AP5181 for data transferauthentification and encoding. Moreover, all areas of theproject are covered by a service level agreement; TSGhas an official hardware service contract with Motorola, while CAP and Integra are responsible for systemservicing and support, as and when requested by TSG.RFIDThe future for goods trackingIn the future RFID technology for complete goodstracking and the subsequent simplification of operationaland customs related procedures will be key to successfulterminal management. Already RFID UHF passive taggingfor containers and crates are due to be introduced intoISO/TS 10891 regulations, in accordance with ISO18000-6C (EPC Gen 2) standards. The market specifictags have been designed to withstand the worstweather conditions and rough handling. The unique, nonmodifiablecode is set into the tag memory at productionand each code can be used to access basic containerspecific information, such as the owner and type, without having to refer to external databases. The resultTerminal San Giorgio has firmly establisheditself as one of the premier terminal operatorsin the Port of GenoaTSG’s recent investment in advanced Motorolatechnology, modern handling equipment, such as cranes, and qualified staff have all led TSG to rapidly increasethe speed and efficiency with which it handles goods, both in terms of Lo-Lo traffic, specifically full-containerand break bulk, and Ro-Ro traffic.TSG has consequently started to promote full containertraffic to be transported via rail with the aim ofdecreasing HGV traffic in port, maximising the use ofits quayside area and ultimately further increasing itsannual throughput.Integra S.r.l.Integra S.r.l. is the market leader in mobile computing inItaly supplying software solutions and IT Managementservices for all parts of the supply chain from production,to logistics and distribution. In its capacity as IT partner,Integra is able to guarantee a detailed control ofproduction processes and a noticeable improvement inworkforce efficiency.
