The Nutcrackeris our Christmas gift to Queenslanders, and I am excited that this year’s seasonwill begin an annual festive traditionin Brisbane.Choreographer Ben Stevensonis a master at storytelling and creatingunique characters. His inspired costume designshave been interpreted with great flairby Noelene Hill, and Set Designer TomBoyd has created wondrous worlds whichsparkle with lighting by David Walters. My heartfelt thanks go to Amanda Talbotand Valmai Pidgeon, whose generoussupport has enabled us to draw togetherthis talented team of designers. It is thesetwo visionary supporters, together withour creative team and dancers, who havegiven us a truly memorable Nutcracker.Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music issuch an important part of this ballet. In the skilled hands of our Music Directorand Principal Conductor, AndrewMogrelia, and the Queensland SymphonyOrchestra, his genius is unmistakable.Guest Artist Remi Wörtmeyer,a Principal at Dutch National Ballet, joins us for this season. What I particularly likeabout every production of The Nutcracker isthat little children are performing on stagefor the first time, while a lot of children arecoming to the ballet for the first time. Thismakes it such a wonderful introduction tothe ballet for children of all ages. This production, beautifullydesigned by Thomas Boyd, is full of magic, excitement and elegance. The party scenein the First Act is set in a farmhouse insteadof the typical palace, and I have tried toinsert humour to keep it less formal. Thehouse is then magically transformed intothe sparkling Land of the Snow. The SecondAct brings you to the enchanting Kingdomof the Sweets, with the Sugar Plum Fairyand dances from around the globe.I am thrilled to be workingwith this fabulous company againand I hope you make this Nutcrackera Christmas tradition in your family!Sincerely,Ben Stevenson OBETHE NUTCRACKER3Photo by Christian AasCostume design for Clara by Desmond Heeley

QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAQueensland Ballet season 201316ANDREW MOGRELIAMusic Director and Principal ConductorAppointed Music Director and Principal Conductorin 2013, British conductor Andrew Mogrelia has workedannually with Queensland Ballet since 2008.He has conducted many of Europe’s leadingorchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic, BBCSymphony, Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam, and SlovakPhilharmonic, among others. In Australia, Andrew hasconducted the Queensland and Tasmanian SymphonyOrchestras. He was Conductor-in-Residence at theBirmingham Conservatoire (UK) from 1992–2002,Co-Music Director of the Dutch National Ballet from1992–1994 and Music Director and Principal Conductorof the San Francisco Ballet from 2003 to 2005.Andrew has also worked with English National Ballet,Nederlands Dans Theater, Birmingham Royal Ballet,Finnish National Ballet, The Australian Ballet, HongKong Ballet and American Ballet Theatre.Andrew’s extensive discography includesrecordings for Naxos and Marco Polo of orchestralworks and numerous complete ballets. Futureengagements include the Tasmanian SymphonyOrchestra and RTE National Symphony in Dublin. One of Tchaikovsky’s mostfamous and endearing scores,The Nutcracker was composed justa few years before his death in 1893.Two very important elements of thisscore distinguish it from his othertwo great ballet scores, Swan Lakeand The Sleeping Beauty.Firstly, the instrumentationof the work is unique. Tchaikovskyopted for a traditionally-sizedbrass section but included a verylarge woodwind group, whichprimarily colours the moods, changes of scene and charactersin the ballet. He also incorporatedextra woodwind instruments, including piccolo, cor anglaisand bass clarinet. The most famousinstrument he added is the celesta, which he had found in Paris someyears earlier, and principallyused to characterise the SugarPlum Fairy in her Act 2 variation.Another highly unusual elementis the children’s chorus, singing arepeated, wordless refrain for theWaltz of the Snow Flakes.MUSIC NOTEA truly magical part ofthis ballet is the way Tchaikovskycomposed the harmony of the score. The story begins in the Stahlbaums’home and moves to the Land ofSnow, the Kingdom of Sweets, andthen ends up back in the familyhome. Technically, Tchaikovskymirrored the change in scenes bystarting the music in B flat majorand working his way slowly throughthe keys until the end of Act 1, whenhe arrives in E major—the farthestkey away from B flat. Just as theKingdom of Sweets is about asfar away as you can get from theStahlbaums’ home!I think everyone feels thismusical journey and senses howthe music is mirroring the story. The Nutcracker is an utterlyenchanting score and a workof genius—arguably Tchaikovsky’sfinest achievement.ANDREW MOGRELIAAndrew Mogrelia’s recording of Suite fromThe Nutcracker ballet has been releasedon the Amadis label; cat. no. 7110.CONCERTMASTERAlan SmithVIOLIN 1Glenn Christensen *Margaret ConnollyEmily FrancisPriscilla HockingAnn HoltzapffelStephen PhillipsBrynley WhiteEddy ChenVIOLIN 2Wayne BrennanFaina DobrenkoSimon DobrenkoNatalie LowFrances McLeanDelia KinmontHelen TraversMatthew HesseVIOLAPaula Stofman =Kirsten Hulin-BobartHelen PoggioliNicholas TomkinBelinda WilliamsCELLODavid Lale ~Andre DuthoitMatthew JonesCraig Allister YoungTim ByrneDOUBLE BASSJohn Fardon ~Dushan Walkowicz >>Justin BullockFLUTEAlexis Kenny ~Janine GranthamPICCOLOMichael Hallit *OBOESarah Meagher >>Alexa MurrayCOR ANGLAISVivienne Brooke ^CLARINETIrit Silver ~Kate TraversBASS CLARINETNicholas Harmsen *BASSOONNicole Tait ~Evan LewisFRENCH HORNPeter Luff >>Ian O’Brien *Lauren ManuelEmma GreganTRUMPETRichard Madden >>Paul Rawson ^TROMBONEDale Truscott >>Ben Marks ^BASS TROMBONETom Coyle *Matthew McGeachin ^HARPJill Atkinson *TIMPANIBrent Miller ^PERCUSSIONCameron Kennedy >>CELESTAKylie Foster #~ Section Principal= Acting Section Principal>> Associate Principal+ Acting Associate Principal* Principal^ Acting Principal# Queensland Ballet Company PianistChairman Greg WanchapChief Executive Officer Sophie GalaiseChief Conductor Johannes FritzschTHE NUTCRACKER17
