OUR STEREOTYPES OF FRENCH PEOPLE AND TEENAGERS1. Eating habits: You eat lots of “ weird “ things like frogs, snails and birds. You also eat lots of baguettes (many photos show people walking in thestreet with a baguette in their hand) and have cheese for dessert. Youdrink a lot of wine, even teenagers do. You eat food with more fat andsugar in than we do – chocolate bread and croissants for example but youdon’t eat a lot (your clothes sizes are so small! ) You have nice restaurantsand you often go to cafés. Everyone smokes. You have your dinner very late compared to us.2. Your appearance: French people are shorter than Swedes, dark hairedand brown-eyed. You wear striped sweaters or shirts and berets. You arevery fashion conscious. Many girls are very pretty and elegant but a little“snobbish”. The guys are charming and like a gentleman. You gesticulateand talk in a lively way – it seems like you are arguing to us.3. French schools? You have longer school days than us, have a lot ofhomework and must study hard. Your schools are more strict than ours- you saySir and Madam to your teachers, you wear similar clothes at school (no way-out,crazy hairstyles or clothes). In France there are many private schools.4.Your interests? You don’t have as much leisure time as us but on weekendswe think you play video-and computer games, play football, spend time withyour friends and family like we do. French people are interested in art andreading.5.Other general things: You love dogs (Yippie!) but when you take them outfor a walk you don’t pick up their poo.(Yuck!)

spaces. You park your cars everywhere and in very smallYou have vineyards everywhere and it’s a beautifulcountry (the Alps, the sea etcetera)You are very proud of your country (patriotic) andyour language (it’s a nice, romantic language) .French people expect tourists tospeak French. You don’t like the USA but you have a Disneyland – strange! There are serious social problems in France- all the riots and strikes.French films are rather strange and a bit depressing. Many of the ideas we have of France come from French movies, the news, theEurovision Song Contest, from what others have said and a little from schoolwork. Only a few of us have been to France before.
