It is the greatest festival of the vast majority ofNepalis, who are Hindus, and it also represents thelongest festival holiday in the country, ranging fromfive days to the end of Tihar, the second most importantfestival. Durga or Bhagawati, the Goddess ofPower and Protector of the Earth, is worshipped onthe nine days of Navaratri, culminating in VijayaDashami Day when elders and seniors give tika andjuniors receive it, with the showering of good wishesand blessings. This is the day when enmity and illwillis supposed to be forgiven and forgotten, as DurgaPuja means the victory of light over darkness, goodover evil, truth over falsehood, and righteousnessover unrighteousness. Goddess Durga is invoked togrant peace, good sense, prosperity and good health. In a little over a month after Dashain, another ConstituentAssembly election is scheduled to take place,a rare, rather unheard-of occurrence in the life of anation. More than five years was wasted in connectionwith the last CA election, and the first assembly, whatever it might have done, came to a naught in thefinal analysis, as it could not deliver a constitution, the prime task for which it had been constituted. Perhapsour political parties and their leaders could nothave lived up to the higher levels of devotion throughan improvement in theirIn celebratingDashain, letnobody missthe centralmessage theoccasion of BadaDashainembodiesbehaviour, petty-mindedness,and extremeselfishness. This Dashain, the anti-Dashain rumblingsof some membersof some ethnic groupsseem to have died down, perhaps they have understoodthe universalmessage of Dashain, transcending over castes, creeds, ethnicity, religion, gender, and suchother things. As a social and cultural reunion, too, Dashain holdsgreat significance for Nepalis, for, among otherthings, people return home from far and wide to bewith their family and near and dear ones and celebratethe occasion with great gusto. Apart from therigours of fasting and worshipping Goddess Durga,Dashain has also been associated with eating, drinkingand making merry, as it spreads over several days. And in these non-spiritual terms, poor people mayfind it a little harder to meet the higher expenses ofDashain. Nevertheless, Bada Dashain is an occasionto forgive and forget grudges and foster a feeling ofbonhomie and camaraderie. Sanatan Dharma, beingamong the most liberal and broad-minded of religions, does not believe in any religious bureaucracyor in conversions, let alone by dangling materialgoodies, nor does it tend to force believers to do thisor that, except when they do something of their ownaccord. On the occasion of this rich tradition, the topleaders of political parties also release their Dashainmessages, wishing the people a Happy Dashain andhighlighting the core spirit of the occasion. Let GoddessBhagawati bestow good sense on them to resolvethe country’s pressing problems in the best waypossible. In celebrating Dashain, let nobody miss thecentral message the occasion of Bada Dashain embodies. The main thing is to capture the central messageof the occasion.Urban farmersWow, it sounds great that among all the conferencesall over the world, one on rooftop farmingis to be organised some time in December. Moreover, the skyrocketing prices of the vegetablesin the market have been a drain on the meagreearnings of the majority of the Kathmandu folks, even those who have their own residence. The rooftop farming not only saves your hardearnedmoney, but also adds that dash of freshness ofa tomato or two, some coriander leaves, or a chilly tospice up the meal that you have cooked to you uttersatisfaction. BecauseChina has no universitiesthat rival the Ivy League orOxford and Cambridge, seniorChinese officials preferto send their children tothese schools.Given the opacity surroundingadmission tothese highly selective institutions(where the acceptancerate typically is as lowas around 8 per cent), it isimpossible to tell whetherprincelings get in on thebasis of merit or familybackground. But it is notablethat princelings arenot found in the most prestigiousdoctoral programs, where professors, not administrators, make admissionsdecisions.Likewise, MIT and Caltech, where only the trulygifted survive, have a dearthof princelings.Indeed, thesheer number ofprincelings, including childrenof incumbent Chineseleaders, now attending IvyLeague universities clearlypoints to the importance offamily ties. President Xi Jinping’sdaughter, for example, studies at Harvard underan assumed name, andBo Xilai’s son has been a studentat Oxford and Harvard’sKennedy School ofGovernment; he is nowstudying at Columbia LawSchool.Simply put, elite Westerncolleges and universities, having identified China as atop market for fund-raisingand high-end networkbuilding, regard theprincelings as a valuable investment.Nurturing tieswith China’s political elite isgood business, and theprincelings can help opendoors. But preferential treatmentfor princelings at eliteuniversities (and businessschools) has real socialcosts, because admission tothese institutions is zerosum.A place awarded to aless-qualified princeling is aplace denied to a more qualifiedapplicant.Worse still, this injustice isself-perpetuating. Westerninvestment banks andmultinationals can useprincelings’ elite academiccredentials to justify hiringthem, even if the real reasonis the hope that putting aprinceling on the payrollwill give the company arainmaker in China.Defenders of this practiceinsist that princelings arewell educated and highlythoughts and feel assured thatthey wish you all the best. For environmentalistsand environment-conscious,alongwith the excitement comesconcern, because, as they say,our festivities are increasinglybecoming non-eco friendly. The effect on water bodiesisone of the biggest concerns.Traditionally, after a festivalconcludes, idols are immersedin a water body. But given themodern day changes — in thekind of material used to makethe idols, the scale and numberof festivities — environmentalistssay that water bodiesare seriously affected.“Earlier idols were made ofrecyclable material like wood, bamboo, hay and clay and vegetabledyes were used to paintthem; now it’s mostly synthetic.Use of plastic and chemicalcolours to paint leads tochromium and other heavymetals being released into thewater during immersion. Thismeans toxicity is deliberatelyintroduced into the food chainbecause there is no effectivetreatment to take these chemicalsout of the water,” AnumitaRoychowdhury, Executive Director(Research and Advocacy)and head of the air pollutionteam of the Centre for Scienceand Environment said.“Back in the late 1990s, theCentral Pollution Controlisharethese.blogspot.comBoard had done a study on theHooghly river after the DurgaPuja celebrations and found 30tonnes of colour, mercury, lead, chromium and othermetals in the water.”“In Kolkata itself, the numberof Puja pandals over adecade has doubled. The scaleand number of celebrationshas gone up in other cities. Incities like Bhopal, lakes are becomingvulnerable; it’s a similarscenario in Delhi’s Yamunariver,” he added. In Hyderabad, where theGanesh festival was recentlycelebrated, environmentalistsand those at the municipalcorporation were concernedabout the effect of the growingscale of celebrations on thecity’s water bodies, especiallythe Hussain Sagar lake.RP Khajuria, member (Environment)of the HyderabadMetropolitan DevelopmentAuthority, said that as a resultof the increasing pollution levelsin the Hussain Sagar lakethey had tried to make theGanesh festival more ecofriendlyby encouragingtweaks of some traditionalpractices. “We asked people toreduce the size of Ganesh idoland immerse these smalleridols at the household level, maybe in bucket of water, andthen use the water for gardening,”Khajuria said, addingthey also promoted clay idols.“But when it comes to religioussentiments, we cannotuse force. We had extra deploymentof people to take out thedisposed material from the lakesafter immersion,” he said. The effects are not restrictedto water bodies. Amita Khurana,a doctor in Delhi, pointedto rising air and noise pollutionduring festivals. “DuringDiwali and Dussehra, manypeople suffer from breathingproblems and stinging of theeyes because of the thicksmog, thanks to fire crackers. Those with asthma, the old,and children are the worst affected...andthe effect remainsfor days,” Khurana said. But all hope is not lost. Sectionsof conscious individualsare doing their bit to make festivalsmore eco-friendly. TheDurga Puja committee of Delhi’sGreater Kailash II draws inspirationfrom the religioustexts in making the idol.“The religious scripturesnarrate exactly how the idolshould be made, which is, obviouslyvery eco-friendly andwe have been following for thelast seven-eight years,” committeevice president SamratBanerjee told IANS.The wooden frame, Banerjeesaid, has been retained for thepast 22 years. “We ask the pottersto take it out five days afterthe bisarjan. For this, we tie thestructure loosely to the bank,”he said, adding they use minimalamount of nails, and jutecable instead of nylon one.The idol, 85 per cent ofwhich is made of hay and therest of clay, is clothed in fabricthat is made 70 per cent of bananastalk and the rest of jute, making it biodegradable. The colours used are alsonatural. “Where non-biodegradablematerial is used, likethe crown, we use householdwires which can be taken outand sold to the scarp dealer, and the money used to pay thepotters”. THE HIMALAYAN TIMES, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2013 www.thehimalayantimes.com PAGE 15CAREERVariety• ON THE JOBIs your employer spying on you?You may know that youremployer can legally spyon you at work (and outsideof work) in severalways. But how do you actuallyknow if your employer issnooping? Here are some signs thatyour employer may be spying on you:Handbook: Your employeehandbook may well have some policieswhere your employer tells youthey’re spying. For instance, theremay be a policy saying that your workon your computer belongs to thecompany, that they monitor emailssent and received on company devices, that they record calls for customerservice purposes, or even thatthey monitor your social media. If itsays so in your handbook, that’s agood indication that big employeris watching.Contract: This is an easy one. Ifyou have a contract with clauses sayingyour computer and companyowneddevices aren’t private, theyprobably aren’t. If your contract saysyour phone calls are being monitored, they probably are.Other policies: Sometimes, thepolicies indicating the company iswatching you are separate from thehandbook. Read those new policiesyour employer sends out. You mightbe surprised what they say. If youhave to sign policies saying you’ve receivedthem, you’d better read andunderstand them. You might signsomething saying you agree thatyour conversations can be taped, allowingyour photos to be used incompany advertising, oracknowledging that you have no expectationof privacy at work (whichyou probably don’t).Lack of confidence holdingwomen back: StudyCameras: If you see camerasaround the workplace, someone iseither behind them or there’s a devicerecording your actions. While thereare restrictions on recording audio, most employers are allowed to videotapeyou at work. Cameras are easy tohide, so just because you can’t seethem doesn’t mean they aren’t there.Computer camera is on: Ifyou see your computer’s camera lighton, someone may be watching youup close and personal. Before youadjust those pantyhose or unzip toanacissastipsntricks.blogspot.comward for it. We don’t ask forthat pay rise — men are muchbetter at that. More men areapplying for jobs; we perhapslook at the job descriptiontuck in a shirt, best make sure nobodyis watching. If the camera turnson unexpectedly, either turn it off orput a post-it over it.Discipline: If you’re written upfor a conversation you thought wasprivate, your employer may have anaudio recording device in the workplace. On the other hand, the coworkerwhom you thought you couldtrust might just have blabbed. Becareful what you say at work, and towhom you say it. Sometimes evenpeople whom you thought werefriends will rat you out.Counter-spying: There are lotsof articles written about how tocounter-spy on your employer tofigure out if they’ve snoopedyour computer.Ctrl-Alt-Delete on a PC brings up amenu called Task Manager. If you goto the Processes tab, it will show youeverything that is running in thebackground. If you look at your Startmenu and see anything called VNC,RealVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC, Log-MeIn, Shadow, Web Sleuth, SilentWatch, or GoToMyPC, then youmight have a spy.Stuff you said privately gets repeated:Even if something you saiddoesn’t end up in a written warning,if your boss makes a snarky commentlike, “Some people think I’mtough on them. You haven’t seentough yet,” right after you told a coworkerthat you thought the boss wastough on you, then there’s either atechnological or human spy. Youmight try a test, such as saying somethingcompletely false but innocuousto a person whom you suspect of beinga spy. Maybe share that you’veand then only focus on theone or two that we can’t do.“Women have to stand upand be counted,” she adds.“We have to just have a go, bedecided to take up quilting orkaraoke and see if it comes backto you.Weird stuff starts when the newguy starts: If a company suspectswrongdoing such as theft or corporateespionage, they sometimes hirea private detective or a company thatwill send in undercover snoops to spyon employees. If a new person ishired and private conversations aresuddenly known to management, oryour personal papers start to disappearor get moved around, you mayhave a hired spy in your midst.Your boss comments about yourpersonal life: Companies like tomonitor social media. If you findyour boss commenting about thingsyou posted on Facebook or Twitter, you can assume that you’re beingwatched outside the office as well.A co-worker was snooped on: If aco-worker is disciplined for an inappropriateemail, a social media post,or something they said about theworkplace, you can be darned surethe company is also watching you. Therefore, assume that everythingyou say, do or write at work is beingmonitored. Many courts say that youhave little or no expectation of privacyat work. That means you shouldn’tcheck personal emails on companydevices, shouldn’t open personal inappropriateemails, and shouldn’t door say anything at work that you don’twant to appear on the front page ofthe company newsletter. If you needto check personal email at work, thenbring your own device, and don’thook up to the company’s wi-fi orserver. If youdon’t know anyone who fits that description, create that person by askingyourself questions such as: Howold is this person? What does this persondo for a living? If you were sittingacross the dinner table from this person, how would you communicatethe messages you wish to convey?Set a goal: Have a specific goal foreach presentation, being clear inmeasurable terms what result you intendto achieve by giving this talk. Is itto change behaviours, sell something, inform, entertain, et cetera? Why is it important for you to makethis presentation?Digestible presentation: Do notwrite out your presentation word forword and then plan on reading it.Participants like presenters who areauthentic, genuine, know their topicand relate to them. Prepare bycreating an outline and then take thetime to practice what you will say outloud to give yourself confidence andan idea of whether or not you havetoo much information for the timeavailable.Practice in front of a mirror: Somespeak with their hands, which can bedistracting, while others are frozen intheir place, neither are appealing toaudiences.
