Among the companies operating here, there are notonly producers of tractors, trailers and cars but also fuel tanks, rims, springsand coil springs as well as vehicle parts - matrix forged, moulded andmechanically treated. This type of industry finds strong support in goodinfrastructural facilities and professional personnel who to a large extentare recruited from among the graduates of Lublin University of Technology.More than 10 thousand students yearly select fields of study relatedto the industry. It was the scientists from Lublin University of Technologywho in 2012 presented the first car in Poland to be powered by hydrogen.

HISTORICAL OUTLINE |YESTERDAYIn 1864, Wacław Moritz established his AgriculturalTools Factory in Lublin. In 1874 the Factoryof Agricultural Machines of Mieczysław Wolskicommenced operations (after the Second WorldWar both sites were combined, forming theLublin Agricultural Machines Factory - LubelskaFabryka Maszyn Rolniczych). In the plants ofPlage and Laśkiewicz, aircrafts were producedin the inter-war period. It is also here that in theperiod of 1925 – 1931, in a specially launched carbody department, bodyworks were producedfor passenger cars, i.a. manufactured by thefamous American automotive concern “Chrysler”,“Buick”, “Hotchkiss” and “Auburu” vehicles as wellas for “Ursus” and “Somua” buses. The plants alsoproduced “Ursus A” lorries. Between 1936 – 1939Lublin was a part of the Central Industrial Zonethanks to which the city became a significantindustrial centre. In 1936 the Lublin AirplaneFactory launched the production of modernaircrafts under the name of “Seagull”, “Bizon” and“Heron”. In 1950s, in Lublin, the Truck Factory (FSC)began its operations, specializing in theproduction of delivery vans (popular cars FSCŻuk and FSC Lublin). It was one of the largestautomotive entities in Poland; annually more than10,000 lorries were produced here. Between 1995 -2001 a South-Korean concern Daewoo producedin Lublin passenger cars branded as DaewooNexia, Musso, Konrado and Honker military cars.TODAYThe long-lasting traditions of automotive industryare currently being reconstructed. In the sametime, machinery sector is seeing dynamic growth.Vast areas where the Daewoo concern usedto operate were divided into smaller plots andsold to companies representing various sectors.Tractors and trailers, Grand Tiger pick-ups, Honker4x4 and Honker Cargo cars are producedhere together with diverse accessories. Whatconstitutes an important asset of this areais constantly improved road infrastructureand close vicinity of the Lublin Airport.STRENGTHSrich traditions of the Lublin automotiveand machinery industryscience and research potentialqualified and experienced technical staffproximity of Eastern European marketsappropriate technical and infrastructuralfacilitiesINTELLECTUAL POTENTIALFields of study |Number of students– academic year 2012/2013Number of graduates– academic year 2012/2013ElectricalEngineering1060 273MechanicalEngineering1499 288Managementand ProductionEngineering1308 274PhysicsMaterialEngineeringTechnicalP h y s i c sMechatronics66 42242 29214 19263 0Secondary Schools |Self Study based on the data collected from universities and colleges in LublinNumber of pupils – academic year 2012/2013AutomotiveVehicles TechnicianElectronicsTechnicianMechanicalTechnicianMechatronicsTechnicianAutomotiveVehiclesElectromechanic32434315311967* Altogether in secondary schools there are over 13 thousand pupils at technical profiles* The 1939 Lublin Defenders Electronics Technical Secondary School was ranked the 1st on the list of the best technical secondary schools in Poland prepared by Perspektywy monthly magazine

Source: URSUSCar running on hydrogenHydrogen instead of petrol? Now it is possible.Scientists from the Lublin University of Technology, led by Professor Mirosław Wendeker, havedeveloped a universal system of vehicle powersupply with hydrogen. Thanks to this,it is possible to use this gas in any engine whichhas a spark ignition. A car running on hydrogenis environmentally friendly and cheaper. A litreof hydrogen is ca. 4 PLN – and of petrol – 6 PLN.Additionally, it is not necessary to install a specialhydrogen engine – it is enough to install a gastank in the boot of the car. After two years of tests, in May 2012, scientistspresented a prototype of a car of Opel brandadjusted in that way.Two-fuel Diesel engineDiesel engine powered with diesel oil andcompressed natural gas? Modern solution mayin the future prove extremely useful forcar owners. It will enable a reduction in oilconsumption, and hence it should be cheaperand more ecological. Michal Biały, a doctoralcandidate of the Lublin University of Technology, for the concept of two-fuel power supply withdirect fuel injection of compressed natural gasto engines with automatic ignition, won 3rdplace in the national competition „Student –Inventor” and received a bronze medalat the 40th International Exhibitionof Inventions in Geneva. The idea has a real chance for implementation. Thanks to a grant of 3 million PLN from theNational Centre for Research and Development, the team of Professor Mirosław Wendeker fromDepartment of Mechanics of Universityof Technology in Lublin conducts furtherresearch.Engine with modern systemof combustionIs it possible to combine a petrol engine withDiesel engine? Engines with an automatic petrolignition, known as HCCI (homogeneous chargecompression ignition) or CAI (controlledauto-ignition) are characterized by a perfectfuel economics and even one hundred timeslower nitrogen oxides emission as comparedto engines used today. It is expected thatin a few years’ time this innovative techniqueof combustion might be found in enginesof mass-produced vehicles. Researchin this direction is currently a dominant worlddevelopment trend and the team of scientistsfrom the Lublin University of Technology underthe supervision of engineer Jacek Hunicz, who has a post-doctoral degree, who joinedthis elite group, pursuing pioneering scientificworks in Poland. Research is now financed fromthe funds of the National Science Centre.
