<strong>River</strong> <strong>Boyne</strong> Wafer Qunlity Manngrmmt <strong>Plan</strong>6. <strong>Boyne</strong> Catchment - <strong>Water</strong> <strong>Quality</strong> <strong>Management</strong> <strong>Plan</strong>6.1 Introducrion and ObjectivesThe overall objectives of a <strong>Water</strong> <strong>Quality</strong> <strong>Management</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> for the<strong>Boyne</strong> catchment can be stated asfollows:-* To protect water quality for abstraction as aprimaty beneficial useTo protect and conserve water quality in the <strong>Boyne</strong> river system to protect fish IfeTo conserve the natural habitats within the river system as far as possible and to conservevisual amenityTo maintain and develop the amenity potential of the <strong>River</strong> <strong>Boyne</strong> and it's tributaries forrecreation including water-based recreational useTo provide for the disposal of efluents from exisling and future clevelopment within therequired water qzralityparanietersThe management strategy applies to the main channel of the Riy..%oyne and it's tributary rivers andlakes ?.F identified in Fig. 1. This plan recognises the strategy do,%?iRE\ent 'Managing Ireland's <strong>River</strong>s and Lakes - ACatchment - Rased Strategy Against ~uho~&&n",. .L. published by the Minister for the Environmenton 2211d May, 1997.6.2 <strong>Water</strong> <strong>Quality</strong> <strong>Management</strong> P&.-.-.. m*L:-In order to satisfy the foregoing objectives, the following primary management policies are proposedto be adopted:-1. An integrated approach to be adopted by the six Local Authorities responsible for the <strong>River</strong><strong>Boyne</strong> catchment (Meath County Council, Kildare County Council, Offaly County Council,Westmeath County Council, Cavan County Council and Louth County Council) with aSteering Group established to implement the catchment management policies in the plan2. The minimum river water quality objectives shall be as defined inTable 6.1, defining targetquality (Q) ratings3. The minimum lake water quality objectives shall be as defined in Tables 6.2 and 6.3 asappropriate. All lakes, other than those in the Kells Blackwater catchment are designated asclear water lakes4.
