SanghJulyGuru PoornimaThe full moon day of <strong>the</strong> month of Ashadha (July-August) is traditionallycelebrated as Guru Poornima. Guru means teacher and Poornima means <strong>the</strong>full moon day of <strong>the</strong> month. This day is also known as Vyasa Poornima. Thegreat sage Vyasa classified <strong>the</strong> accumulated spiritual knowledge of <strong>the</strong> Vedasunder four heads - Rig, Yajur, Saama and Atharva. He also composed <strong>the</strong>au<strong>the</strong>ntic treatise of Brahma-sootras to explain <strong>the</strong> background of Vedas. Healso wrote <strong>the</strong> eighteen Puranas, <strong>the</strong> stories of our great heroes and saints,to carry <strong>the</strong> spiritual and moral teachings contained <strong>the</strong>rein to <strong>the</strong> commonmasses. There<strong>for</strong>e he is <strong>the</strong> Adi-Guru <strong>for</strong> all people.How does this Sanskrit word (Guru) come from? ‘Gu’ stands <strong>for</strong>Guna<strong>the</strong>eta (attributeless) and ‘Ru’ signiies Rupavarjita (<strong>for</strong>mless). Thus, <strong>the</strong>one, who is <strong>for</strong>mless and attributeless, is <strong>the</strong> true Guru. God!! The Guruhelps us to give up <strong>the</strong> ignorance, light <strong>the</strong> lamp of wisdom and ultimatelymerge in <strong>the</strong> Divine. The “Gu” means darknessor ignorance. “Ru” denotes <strong>the</strong> remover of that darkness. There<strong>for</strong>e one whoremoves darkness of our ignorance is a Guru. A Guru also inspires and guidesus on to <strong>the</strong> path of God-realization. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, Guru is <strong>the</strong> one whogives us knowledge. Thus mo<strong>the</strong>r is considered as <strong>the</strong> first Guru (teacher).But we acquire knowledge from o<strong>the</strong>rs too such as School Teacher, CollegeLecturer, or our Coach or even <strong>the</strong> Shikshak at our <strong>Balagokulam</strong>. Thus <strong>the</strong>yare also referred as Guru. One should always be thankful to whom he or shegains knowledge.In Hindu tradition, <strong>the</strong> Guru is looked upon as an embodiment of Godhimself. JulySanghstate of wisdom and bliss. The Guru or teacher also guides us into <strong>the</strong> rightpath when we lose track. Guru also boosts our energy when we run out ofsteam. On this auspicious day of Guru Poornima, many disciples per<strong>for</strong>m apuja of <strong>the</strong>ir respective spiritual preceptor (Guru). One may even celebrate insilence, reading <strong>the</strong> religious scriptures. The best <strong>for</strong>m of worshiping Guru isto follow his teachings, remember/implement <strong>the</strong>m and propagate <strong>the</strong>m.In our <strong>Balagokulam</strong>s we have considered sacred Bhagava Dhwaj (saffronflag) as <strong>the</strong> true Guru. Why is that? Why don’t we consider an individual as aGuru? There have been various sages (saints), teachers and spiritual leaderswho have been teaching countless individuals. But, is <strong>the</strong>re any one who canbe looked upon as <strong>the</strong> preceptor <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire Hindu people - <strong>for</strong> all <strong>the</strong>ir past,present and future generations? Obviously, no individual can play that role. Ahuman being is after all mortal and, however great, has its own limitations. Hecannot be a permanent guide <strong>for</strong> all time to come. But <strong>the</strong>re is one who can bea permanent guide to all <strong>for</strong> all <strong>the</strong> time! Sacred Bhagava Dhwaj (saffron flag)!!The sacred Bhagava Dhwaj that represents all <strong>the</strong> Gurus, is worshipped as<strong>the</strong> Guru of <strong>the</strong> entire Hindu society. That is why we consider Bhagava Dhwajas a Guru in our <strong>Balagokulam</strong>s.Bhagava Dhwaj is an ancient as <strong>the</strong> Hindu people<strong>the</strong>mselves. It has flown over <strong>the</strong> hermitages of <strong>the</strong> seersand sanyaasins and also over <strong>the</strong> celestial palaces ofemperors. It has flown triumphantly over <strong>the</strong> battlefieldsof freedom struggle and has symbolized <strong>the</strong> immortalspirit of freedom in <strong>the</strong> Hindu mind. It is <strong>the</strong> one supremesymbol held in universal reverence by all sects and castes,and all creeds and faiths of <strong>the</strong> Hindu people. It is in fact<strong>the</strong> greatest unifying symbol of <strong>the</strong> entire Hindu world.The color of <strong>the</strong> Bhagava Dhwaj - <strong>the</strong> saffron, depicts sacrifice and service.The flames rising from <strong>the</strong> yajna are saffron in color and indeed reflect thisspirit.The annual function of Sri Guru Pooja in our <strong>Balagokulam</strong>s presents amoment of introspection <strong>for</strong> us to check up how far we have progressed in thispath of renunciation and selfless service to <strong>the</strong> society over <strong>the</strong> last one year,and take lessons from it and resolve to march faster in <strong>the</strong> current year.8Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS)


DharmaJulyHindu ValuesWe, <strong>the</strong> Hindu society are so diversified. We have different modes ofworship, different names of gods, different languages, different religiouspractices, yet, we all have some common values to live by. Some of <strong>the</strong>m aredescribed below.Respect <strong>for</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r and mo<strong>the</strong>r EarthWe should respect our Mo<strong>the</strong>r, as she is The Creator. The first word<strong>the</strong> child learns to say is “amma”, ”maa”, “maama”, which all mean Mo<strong>the</strong>r.Mo<strong>the</strong>r, is in fact considered as <strong>the</strong> First Guru (teacher) <strong>for</strong> a child. Thisconcept of respect and love <strong>for</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r or creator is extended to o<strong>the</strong>r naturalphenomena also which provide sustenance <strong>for</strong> life. For example rivers, cowswhich give us milk, Earth which provides us a place to live are all worshippedas mo<strong>the</strong>r. In general everything good, blissful, protective and evil-destroyingis associated with a mo<strong>the</strong>r-image.Respect <strong>for</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r and ancestorsIn Hindu families, we emphasize respect <strong>for</strong> parents and elders. Parentsgive <strong>the</strong>ir best to take care and bring up <strong>the</strong> children with values, providing<strong>the</strong>m whatever <strong>the</strong>y can, be it education, or o<strong>the</strong>rwise. In turn, <strong>the</strong> parentsshould be divine <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> children. Service to one’s parents is considered piousand divine duty. It’s a very common custom to bow down to touch <strong>the</strong> eldersand parents feet which emphasizes <strong>the</strong> value of elders. The story of ShravanKumar, who was dedicated to serve his parents is often remembered in thiscontext.Respect <strong>for</strong> Teacher (Guru)Like parents, <strong>the</strong> Guru is also worthy of worship. In Hindu society,Guru is worshiped as a God. A Guru is not just a teacher who gives us onlyeducation, but also inspires us and passes on his experience and knowledge.Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS)9


JulyDharmaFor a Hindu, a Guru can be a person, a symbol or a book. For example, in <strong>the</strong>Sikh tradition, <strong>the</strong> holy book “Guru Granth Sahib” is treated as <strong>the</strong> Guru. Inour <strong>Balagokulam</strong>, we treat ‘Bhagwa Dhwaj’ (Saffron flag) as <strong>the</strong> Guru.EducationWe need to study our scriptures. Hindu (Vedic) Dharma is about <strong>the</strong>way of living (life). So we need to learn, understand and follow our customs,traditions from scriptures and not just be blind followers.DevotionWe need to cultivate devotion through worship/meditation. Devotionleads to concentration. Once we learn to concentrate, we can achieve andsucceed in many aspect of life.Purity in body, mind and speechWe need to be pure in body, mind and speech. If we are not pure/cleanphysically, it leads to physical illness. Similarly if we are not pure in thoughts(honest), it leads to stress. Following are some of <strong>the</strong> values which will help usdevelop purity of mind and body.1. Truth‘Satyameva Jayate’ (Truth alone triumphs), mentioned in our Scripturesand which also happens to appear in <strong>the</strong> national emblem of Bharat, is avalue, we all should practice. The story of king Harishchandra illustrates <strong>the</strong>value of following <strong>the</strong> truth irrespective of any obstacles and difficulties.2. HonestyKeeping up with <strong>the</strong> promises, not betraying people and not telling a lieare <strong>the</strong> unique values of <strong>the</strong> Hindu Dharma. Character and integrity leads tosuccess and is respected by all. Many have lost everything to keep up with<strong>the</strong> promises.3. DharmaJuly‘Dharma’ is many a time translated as righteousness. Our scriptures say, ‘ifyou protect righteousness, <strong>the</strong> righteousness shall protect you.’4. Forgiveness, Non-Violence and FearlessnessHindus believe that all life is sacred, to be loved and revered. There<strong>for</strong>eHindus practice non-violence. Development of qualities like non-violence and<strong>for</strong>giveness require fearlessness and strength. The story of Swami Dayanandais a very good example in this context. Once, during one of his discourses,a misguided man, Karansingh, approached him in anger and with a swordin his hand. Swami Dayananda quickly grabbed his arm and wrenched <strong>the</strong>sword. He broke it by pressing its point to <strong>the</strong> ground. But when <strong>the</strong> man,Karansingh, felt ashamed and guilty, he <strong>for</strong>gave him without keeping anythingin mind.5. Contentment and GenerosityWe should be satisfied with what we are and what we have. There is nouse of being a part of <strong>the</strong> rat race or unnecessary comparison and competition.We should not be greedy but generous. Greediness normally leads to <strong>the</strong> evilthoughts in mind.6. Service and SacrificeHindus consider that <strong>the</strong> service to o<strong>the</strong>r is a virtue; giving pain to o<strong>the</strong>ris a sin. Giving and sharing is one of <strong>the</strong> values preached relentlessly in Hinduscriptures. We need to be prepared to make sacrifices and be patient. Serving<strong>the</strong> society is not optional but <strong>the</strong> duty of every hindu.List of Hindu values is not completed here. Our sages (or scriptures)and saints have listed enormous “DO’s” and “DONT’s” <strong>for</strong> each and everyindividual to lead proper, right and balanced life and to make not only Hindusbut everyone happy and satisfied. JulyMan of VirtueStory of Maharana PratapYour dreams come true and you become successful if you havedetermination and a strong will. God helps those who help <strong>the</strong>mselves. Thereis nothing impossible in <strong>the</strong> world <strong>for</strong> those with will power and unyieldingdetermination. Although, Bharat’s history is full of such examples that conveythis message, Maharana Pratap’s example is <strong>the</strong> unique one.The Rajputs (a community in Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Bharat) are brave, chivalrousand gallant people. They were <strong>the</strong> first to resist <strong>the</strong> Mughal invaders. Manywars were fought between <strong>the</strong> Rajputs and <strong>the</strong> Mughals. Rajputs of Mewar (aprovince in Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Bharat) surpassed all in deeds of bravery and personalsacrifice.Maharana Udai Singh II ruled <strong>the</strong> kingdom of Mewar (province of Nor<strong>the</strong>rnBharat), with his capital at Chittor. Maharana Pratap was his eldest son whowas given <strong>the</strong> title of Crown Prince.Those days, Mughal King Akbar wanted to rule <strong>the</strong> whole of Bharat andused <strong>for</strong>ces to over come <strong>the</strong> Rajput kings. As a result, almost all major RajputKings surrendered to Akbar, but Maharana Pratap didn’t!! In fact, MaharanaPratap and his few loyal Rajput chieftain took pledge in front of Goddess Kali,“Hey Kali!! We take a pledge that we will not sleep on a bed but on <strong>the</strong> ground.We will not wear any fancy clo<strong>the</strong>s until we defeat our enemies!!”Mughal King Akbar sent his associate ManaSingh to convince MaharanaPratap. In his meeting with Maharana, ManaSingh asked, “Why don’t you joinAkbar?” Maharana replied back, “I have not sold my honor to Akbar!! Rajputslike <strong>the</strong>ir honor most. You are not true Rajput!!”. ManaSingh furiously said, “Icame as a friend and you have insulted me. You shall pay <strong>for</strong> this”. Maharanabravely replied, “Very well <strong>the</strong>n!! we shall meet in <strong>the</strong> battle!!” At last Akbarand ManaSingh decided to use <strong>for</strong>ce against Maharana Pratap.The great battle between Maharana Pratap and ManaSingh was fought in<strong>the</strong> valley of Haldi-Ghati in June 21 1576. Maharana had only twenty thousandsoldiers where as ManaSingh and his associate Salim had eighty thousand<strong>12</strong>Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS)


Man of VirtueJulysoldiers. There wasn’t any possibility ofwinning <strong>the</strong> battle. Maharana thought,“If I somehow manage to kill ManaSingh,<strong>the</strong>re is a slight chance of winning <strong>the</strong>battle”Maharana Pratap advancedtowards ManaSingh without any supportor backup. ManaSingh was riding anelephant. Pratap, riding a horse Chetak,attacked him like a fierce lion. He threwhis spear aiming at ManaSingh, butelephant moved and spear missed itstarget. Soon Maharana was surroundedfrom all sides by enemy soldiers. But hewas saved by his wise horse Chetak, whotook him in an unconscious state awayfrom <strong>the</strong> battle scene. Chetak was alsobadly wounded, but he did not stop untilhe took his master to safe place.Maharana fought bravely. In this battle he lost almost all his army. After<strong>the</strong> battle, he and his family lived in exile. But he didn’t give up. He againstarted raising army with <strong>the</strong> help of his friend Bhama Shah and Bhil Tribals.Bhama Shah helped him raise <strong>the</strong> money and weapons. Bhil Tribals providedhim with man-power.Maharana Pratap fought relentlessly <strong>for</strong> fifteen years to get his kingdomback. By <strong>the</strong> end of 1584, he managed to liberate his most of <strong>the</strong> lost territories.But he could not get his Chittor (Capital of Mewar) back. It was still occupiedby <strong>the</strong> enemies. His dream was partially fulfilled. After <strong>the</strong> relentless ef<strong>for</strong>ts,he died in 1597.“Where <strong>the</strong>re is a will, <strong>the</strong>re is a way” is a familiar and well-known saying.This saying underlines a very vital fact of life, very few truly understand andpractice it. It is also known as Rakhi Poornima as it iscelebrated on <strong>the</strong> full moon (Poornima) day of <strong>the</strong> holy month Shravana (August).The Raksha Bandhan festival stirs up one of <strong>the</strong> deepest and noblest emotions in<strong>the</strong> human heart - <strong>the</strong> abiding and chaste bond of love between <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong>sister. The duties of bro<strong>the</strong>rs and <strong>the</strong> love and affection of sisters are symbolizedthrough <strong>the</strong> tying of Rakhi. In earlier days, it was merely a festival of bro<strong>the</strong>rs andsisters, but now it has become of all.On <strong>the</strong> Raksha Bandhan day, <strong>the</strong> festivitiesstart by <strong>the</strong> day break. HistoryAugustFreedom StruggleAs we walk through <strong>the</strong> world history, we can easily conclude that <strong>the</strong> mostof <strong>the</strong> countries were under <strong>the</strong> control of <strong>for</strong>eign invaders/rulers ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>for</strong> a smalltime (30-40 years) or <strong>for</strong> a long time (100 to 300 years). The main purpose of <strong>the</strong><strong>for</strong>eign invaders was to bring as much area as possible under <strong>the</strong>ir control. They notonly looted local people but also destroyed <strong>the</strong>ir cultural heritage such as buildings,religious/sacred places, books, etc. They captured o<strong>the</strong>r countries ei<strong>the</strong>r by <strong>for</strong>ceor by diplomacy. There are very few countries in <strong>the</strong> world those have never everinvaded any o<strong>the</strong>r countries. Bharat (India) is one of <strong>the</strong>m.In <strong>the</strong> 18th century, America was also invaded and ruled by British. Americastruggled a lot <strong>for</strong> her freedom. The great heroes of America fought back, defeatedBritish and made her free from <strong>the</strong> shackles of <strong>the</strong>m. Isn’t it great! People of Americaare always thankful to <strong>the</strong>m. They celebrate 4th of July as America’s IndependenceDay. You may ask, “What is Independence Day?” It is <strong>the</strong> day when America gotfreedom and independent sovereign of <strong>the</strong>ir own people. This glorious and memorableday is celebrated throughout America as an Independence Day.Bharat (India), too, was under <strong>the</strong> control of <strong>for</strong>eign people. During <strong>the</strong> beginningof Christian era, she was invaded and looted by so many <strong>for</strong>eigners. Do you knowwhy so many <strong>for</strong>eign invaders invaded Bharat? It is because Bharat is <strong>the</strong> oldestcivilization with glorious past. She was rich in culture, diverse but still united. Shewas a beautiful country spiritually and geographically. Bharat was wealthy too. Noone was poor. Bharat had enormous of knowledge in terms of science, ma<strong>the</strong>maticsand spirituality. Bharatiya People’s behavior and character was extremely high. AugustHistoryadvanced in all fields. No wonder! Invaders from <strong>the</strong> middle-east had <strong>the</strong>ir lustfuleyes on Bharat. Around three thousand years back, <strong>the</strong>y started attacking Bharatto concur her. But <strong>the</strong> great heroes of Bharat such as <strong>the</strong> King Harshavardhan, KingChandragupta, King Shalivahana, King Vikramaditya and many more fought backand defeated <strong>the</strong> invaders. We do remember <strong>the</strong>m when we chant our ekatmata(Bharat-Bhakti) stotra.Just like America, Bharat too was ruled by British. Around 300 years backBritish came to Bharat as traders. Gradually <strong>the</strong>y started taking interest inpolitics. Un<strong>for</strong>tunately Bharat, though culturally united, did not have one rule andadministration by that time. It was divided in several small kingdoms. British took<strong>the</strong> advantage of this situation and applied divide-and-rule <strong>for</strong>mula. Sometimesusing political tactics and sometimes winning battle, <strong>the</strong>y took control of entireBharat and soon <strong>the</strong>y became of <strong>the</strong> rulers of Bharat.During <strong>the</strong> independence, broadly <strong>the</strong>re were two major movements fighting<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> independence; non-revolutionaries and revolutionaries. Non-revolutionariesadapted a way of non-violence. They applied peaceful and legitimate means suchas protest against British, non-cooperation with <strong>the</strong>m and constitutional agitation.Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabh-bhai Patel were <strong>the</strong> first row leaders of thismovement. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side, revolutionaries wanted to attain freedom by hookor by crook. They would do anything to make Bharat independent. They wouldnot hesitate to kill British whenever required. They were ready to sacrifice <strong>the</strong>irown lives. Some handful names of <strong>the</strong> revolutionaries are Swa. Savarkar, SubhashChandra Bose, Lok. Tilak, Bhagat Singh, ChandraShekhar Azad. Though <strong>the</strong> pathof <strong>the</strong>se movements was different, objective was same – freedom!There was one person who was not happy with both <strong>the</strong> revolutionary andnon-revolutionary movements <strong>for</strong> freedom. In <strong>the</strong> beginning he participated in bothmovements. But he was not happy with <strong>the</strong> leaders, <strong>the</strong>ir thoughts and <strong>the</strong>ir paths.His name was Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar! Yes! Our Doctorji. He wondered, “Why<strong>the</strong> land of Ram, Sita, Krishna, Rana Pratap and Shivaji had become so weak. HistoryAugustwith a population of 300 million” He concluded that British dedication, loyalty to<strong>the</strong>ir country and excellent organizational skills were <strong>the</strong> secrets of <strong>the</strong>ir success.This was what Bharat lacked. For a living nation, an organized people and goodadministration is essential.Doctorji thought more about <strong>the</strong> Bharat than just a freedom. Once talking tohis associates he asked, “Even if we are successful to kick out British, what is <strong>the</strong>guarantee that <strong>the</strong>y won’t come back? And even after <strong>the</strong> freedom, can we get ourcountry to <strong>the</strong> pinnacle of Glory?”.Then he adapted a different way! He started an organization, RashtriyaSwayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to organize <strong>the</strong> people and fill <strong>the</strong>m up with patriotism,make <strong>the</strong>m realize <strong>the</strong>ir true identity, make <strong>the</strong>m dedicated and ready <strong>for</strong> sacrifice,make <strong>the</strong>m proud of <strong>the</strong>ir glorious culture and make <strong>the</strong>m think more about societyand country than self. Such organized people will ensure not only freedom but alsoglorious future. Doctorji started Sangh around 80 years back. Sangh’s work rapidlyincreased in all parts of <strong>the</strong> country and now it has been proved a major <strong>for</strong>ce in<strong>the</strong> progress of Bharat.At last, <strong>the</strong> day came when Bharat got freedom. With everybody’s ef<strong>for</strong>tsand after <strong>the</strong> sacrifices of thousands, Bharat attained her freedom on <strong>the</strong> August15th of 1947. Now <strong>the</strong> Bharat is governed and ruled by her own people. Havinga breakthrough in all major fields, she is progressing by leaps and bound andclimbing towards <strong>the</strong> pinnacle of glory.This is <strong>the</strong> brief story of Independence of Bharat. But what was <strong>the</strong> purposeof presenting it be<strong>for</strong>e us? Why do we care about Bharat? It is because Bharat isour <strong>for</strong>efa<strong>the</strong>r’s country. Our roots are originated in Bharat. She is our spiritualcountry too. Bharat is <strong>the</strong> first country where our Hindu culture, our HinduDharma is flourished. Isn’t it? Having this relationship with Bharat, it becomes ourresponsibility to care <strong>for</strong> her. AugustDharmaRituals and Their MeaningWhen we carefully observe, we find that hindu people per<strong>for</strong>m severaltypes of rituals in thier lives. Even at home, we see, our parents do severalthings such as doing daily pooja, fasting, putting bindi / marks on <strong>for</strong>ehead,chanting prayers/hymns on different occassions. Initially we think that <strong>the</strong>serituals are unnecessary and <strong>the</strong>y lead to superstition. But once we understand<strong>the</strong> meaning and objective of <strong>the</strong>se rituals, we will feel those rituals necessaryand important. However, some rituals may be irrilivant in today’s world as<strong>the</strong>y are not oriented or based on eternal truths. Let us try to learn someHindu Rituals.Why do we light a lamp?In almost every Hindu home a lamp is lit daily be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> altar of <strong>the</strong>Lord. In some houses it is lit at dawn, in some, twice a day – at dawn and dusk– and in a few it is maintained continuously (akhanda deepa). All auspiciousfunctions commence with <strong>the</strong> lighting of <strong>the</strong> lamp, which is often maintainedright through <strong>the</strong> occasion.Light symbolizes knowledge. The Lord is <strong>the</strong> “Knowledge Principle”(chaitanya) who is <strong>the</strong> source, <strong>the</strong> enlivener and <strong>the</strong> illuminator of all knowledge.Hence light is worshiped as <strong>the</strong> Lord himself.Knowledge removes ignorance just as light removes darkness. Alsoknowledge is a lasting inner wealth by which all outer achievement can beaccomplished. Hence we light <strong>the</strong> lamp to bow down to knowledge as <strong>the</strong>greatest of all <strong>for</strong>ms of wealthWhy not light a bulb or tube light? That too would remove darkness. But<strong>the</strong> traditional oil lamp has a fur<strong>the</strong>r spiritual significance. The oil or gheein <strong>the</strong> lamp symbolizes our vaasanas or negative tendencies and <strong>the</strong> wick,<strong>the</strong> ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, <strong>the</strong> vaasanas get slowly exhaustedand <strong>the</strong> ego too finally perishes. A lamp is lit and <strong>the</strong>Lord worshipped each day. O<strong>the</strong>r spiritual practices like japa (repetition of<strong>the</strong> Lord’s name), meditation, paaraayana (reading of <strong>the</strong> scriptures), prayers,devotional singing etc is also done here. Special worship is done on auspiciousoccasions like birthdays, anniversaries, festivals and <strong>the</strong> like. Each memberof <strong>the</strong> family – young or old – communes with and worships <strong>the</strong> Divine here.The Lord is <strong>the</strong> entire creation. He is <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> true owner of <strong>the</strong>house we live in to. The prayer room is <strong>the</strong> Master room of <strong>the</strong> house. We are<strong>the</strong> earthly occupants of His property. This notion rids us of false pride andpossessiveness.The ideal attitude to take is to regard <strong>the</strong> Lord as <strong>the</strong> true owner of ourhomes and ourselves as caretakers of His home. But if that is ra<strong>the</strong>r difficult,we could at least think of Him as a very welcome guest. Just as we wouldhouse an important guest in <strong>the</strong> best com<strong>for</strong>t, so too we felicitate <strong>the</strong> Lord’spresence in our homes by having a prayer room or altar, which is, at all times,kept clean and well-decorated.Also <strong>the</strong> Lord is all-pervading. To remind us that He resides in our homeswith us, we have prayer rooms. Without <strong>the</strong> grace of <strong>the</strong> Lord, no task can besuccessfully or easily accomplished. We invoke His grace by communing withHim in <strong>the</strong> prayer room each day and on special occasions.Each room in a house is dedicated to a specific function like <strong>the</strong> bedroom<strong>for</strong> resting, <strong>the</strong> drawing room to receive guests, <strong>the</strong> kitchen <strong>for</strong> cooking etc.Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS)27


AugustDharmaThe furniture, decor and <strong>the</strong> atmosphere of each room are made conduciveto <strong>the</strong> purpose it serves. So too <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> purpose of meditation, worship andprayer, we should have a conducive atmosphere – hence <strong>the</strong> need <strong>for</strong> a prayerroom.Sacred thoughts and sound vibrations pervade <strong>the</strong> place and influence<strong>the</strong> minds of those who spend time <strong>the</strong>re. Spiritual thoughts and vibrationsaccumulated through regular meditation, worship and chanting done <strong>the</strong>repervade <strong>the</strong> prayer room. Even when we are tired or agitated, by just sittingin <strong>the</strong> prayer room <strong>for</strong> a while, we feel calm, rejuvenated and spirituallyuplifted.Why do we do Namaste?Hindus greet each o<strong>the</strong>r with namaste. The two palms are placed toge<strong>the</strong>rin front of <strong>the</strong> chest and <strong>the</strong> head bows whilst saying <strong>the</strong> word namaste. Thisgreeting is <strong>for</strong> all – people younger than us, of our own age, those older thanus, friends and even strangers.There are five <strong>for</strong>ms of <strong>for</strong>mal traditional greeting enjoined in <strong>the</strong>shaastras of which namaskaram is one. This is understood as prostration butit actually refers to paying homage as we do today when we greet each o<strong>the</strong>rwith a namaste.Namaste could be just a casual or <strong>for</strong>mal greeting, a cultural conventionor an act of worship. However <strong>the</strong>re is much more to it than meets <strong>the</strong> eye.In Sanskrit namah + te = namaste. It means – I bow to you – my greetings,salutations or prostration to you. Namaha can also be literally interpretedas “na ma” (not mine). It has a spiritual significance of negating or reducingone’s ego in <strong>the</strong> presence of ano<strong>the</strong>r.The real meeting between people is <strong>the</strong> meeting of <strong>the</strong>ir minds. When wegreet ano<strong>the</strong>r, we do so with namaste, which means, “may our minds meet,”indicated by <strong>the</strong> folded palms placed be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> chest. The bowing down of <strong>the</strong>head is a gracious <strong>for</strong>m of extending friendship in love and humility.The spiritual meaning is even deeper. The life <strong>for</strong>ce, <strong>the</strong> divinity, <strong>the</strong>Self or <strong>the</strong> Lord in me is <strong>the</strong> same in all. Recognising this oneness with <strong>the</strong>meeting of <strong>the</strong> palms, we salute with head bowed <strong>the</strong> Divinity in <strong>the</strong> person wemeet. The gesture is often accompanied bywords like “Ram Ram”, “Jai Shri Krishna”, “Namo Narayana”, “Jai Siya Ram”,“Om Shanti” etc – indicating <strong>the</strong> recognition of this divinity.When we know this significance, our greeting does not remain just asuperficial gesture or word but paves <strong>the</strong> way <strong>for</strong> a deeper communion withano<strong>the</strong>r in an atmosphere of love and respect.Why do we wear marks (like tilak, pottu) on <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ehead?The tilak or pottu invokes a feeling of sanctity in <strong>the</strong> wearer and o<strong>the</strong>rs.It is recognized as a religious mark. Its <strong>for</strong>m and color vary according to one’scaste, religious sect or <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>m of <strong>the</strong> Lord worshipped.The tilak cover <strong>the</strong> spot between <strong>the</strong> eyebrows, which is <strong>the</strong> seat of memoryand thinking. It is known as <strong>the</strong> Aajna Chakra in <strong>the</strong> language of Yoga. Thetilak is applied with <strong>the</strong> prayer – “May I remember <strong>the</strong> Lord. May this piousfeeling pervade all my activities. May I be righteous in my deeds.” Even whenwe temporarily <strong>for</strong>get this prayerful attitude <strong>the</strong> mark on ano<strong>the</strong>r reminds usof our resolve. The tilak is thus a blessing of <strong>the</strong> Lord and a protection againstwrong tendencies and <strong>for</strong>ces.The entire body emanates energy in <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>m of electromagnetic waves– <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ehead and <strong>the</strong> subtle spot between <strong>the</strong> eyebrows especially so. That iswhy worry generates heat and causes a headache. The tilak and pottu cools <strong>the</strong><strong>for</strong>ehead, protects us and prevents energy loss. Some times <strong>the</strong> entire <strong>for</strong>eheadis covered with chandan or bhasma. Using plastic reusable “stick bindis” isnot very beneficial, even though it serves <strong>the</strong> purpose of decoration.Why do we apply <strong>the</strong> holy ash?The ash of any burnt object is not regarded as holy ash. Bhasma (<strong>the</strong>holy ash) is <strong>the</strong> ash from <strong>the</strong> homa (sacrificial fire) where special woodalong with ghee and o<strong>the</strong>r herbs is offered as worship of <strong>the</strong> Lord. Or <strong>the</strong>deity is worshipped by pouring ash as abhisheka and is <strong>the</strong>n distributed asbhasma.Bhasma is generally applied on <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>ehead. Some apply it on certainparts of <strong>the</strong> body like <strong>the</strong> upper arms, chest etc. Some ascetics rub it all over<strong>the</strong> body. AugustDharmaHoma (offering of oblations into <strong>the</strong> fire with sacred chants) signifies<strong>the</strong> offering or surrender of <strong>the</strong> ego and egocentric desires into <strong>the</strong> flame ofknowledge or a noble and selfless cause. The consequent ash signifies <strong>the</strong>purity of <strong>the</strong> mind, which results from such actions. Also <strong>the</strong> fire of knowledgeburns <strong>the</strong> oblation and wood signifying ignorance and inertia respectively.The ash we apply indicates that we should burn false identification with <strong>the</strong>body and become free of <strong>the</strong> limitations of birth and death. This is not tobe misconstrued as a morose reminder of death but as a powerful pointertowards <strong>the</strong> fact that time and tide wait <strong>for</strong> none.Bhasma is specially associated with Lord Shiva who applies it all over Hisbody. Shiva devotes apply bhasma as a tripundra (<strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>m of “º “). Let us try to learn more.Why do we fast?Most devout Hindus fast regularly or on special occasions like festivals.On such days <strong>the</strong>y do not eat at all, eat once or make do with fruits or aspecial diet of simple food. Fasting in Sanskrit is called upavaasa. Upa means“near” + vaasa means “to stay”. Upavaasa <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e means staying near (<strong>the</strong>God), meaning <strong>the</strong> attainment of close mental proximity with <strong>the</strong> Lord. Thenwhat has upavaasa to do with food?A lot of our time and energy is spent in procuring food items, cooking,eating and digesting food. Certain food types make our minds dull and agitated.Hence on certain days people decide to save time and conserve <strong>the</strong>ir energyby eating ei<strong>the</strong>r simple, light food or totally abstaining from eating so that<strong>the</strong> mind becomes alert and pure. The mind, o<strong>the</strong>rwise pre-occupied by <strong>the</strong>thought of food, now entertains noble thoughts and stays with <strong>the</strong> Lord. Sinceit is a self-imposed <strong>for</strong>m of discipline it is usually adhered to with joy.Also every system needs a break and an overhaul to work at its best. Restand a change of diet during fasting is very good <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> digestive system and<strong>the</strong> entire body. The more you indulge <strong>the</strong> senses, <strong>the</strong> more <strong>the</strong>y make <strong>the</strong>irdemands. Fasting helps us to cultivate control over our senses, sublimateour desires. Fasting should not make us weak, irritable or create an urge toindulge later. This happens when <strong>the</strong>re is no noble goal behind fasting.The Bhagavad Geeta urges us to eat appropriately - nei<strong>the</strong>r too less nortoo much - yukta-aahaara and to eat simple, pure and healthy food (a saatvikdiet) even when not fasting.Why do we regard trees and plants as sacred?The God, <strong>the</strong> life in us, pervades all living beings, be <strong>the</strong>y plants oranimals. They give us <strong>the</strong> vital factors that makes life possible onearth: food, oxygen, clothing, shelter, medicines etc.Hence, in Bharat, we are taught to regard trees and plants as sacred.Hindu scriptures tell us to plant ten trees if, <strong>for</strong> any reason, we have to cutone. We are advised to use parts of trees and plants only as much as isneeded <strong>for</strong> food, fuel, shelter etc. we are also urged to apologize to a plant ortree be<strong>for</strong>e cutting it.Certain trees and plants like tulasi, peepal etc. which have tremendousbeneficial qualities, are worshipped till today. It is believed that divine beingsmanifest as trees and plants, and many people worship <strong>the</strong>m to fulfill <strong>the</strong>irdesires or to please <strong>the</strong> Lord.Why do we say shaanti thrice?Shaanti, meaning “peace”, is a natural state of being. Disturbances arecreated ei<strong>the</strong>r by us or o<strong>the</strong>rs. For example, peace already exists in a placeuntil someone makes noise. There<strong>for</strong>e, peace underlies all our agitations.When agitations end, peace is naturally experienced since it was already<strong>the</strong>re. Where <strong>the</strong>re is peace, <strong>the</strong>re is happiness. There<strong>for</strong>e, every one withoutexception desires peace in his/her life.However, peace within or without seems very hard to attain because it iscovered by our own agitations. A rare few manage to remain peaceful withineven in <strong>the</strong> midst of external agitation and troubles. To invoke peace, wechant prayers. By chanting prayers, troubles end and peace is experiencedinternally, irrespective of <strong>the</strong> external disturbances. All such prayers end bychanting shaanti thrice.It is believed that trivaram satyam - that which is said thrice comes true.For emphasising a point we repeat a thing thrice. In <strong>the</strong> court of law also, onewho takes <strong>the</strong> witness stands says, “I shall speak <strong>the</strong> truth, <strong>the</strong> whole truthand nothing but <strong>the</strong> truth”.The popular notion of peace today is ‘absence of war’. But Hindus thinkof peace at three levels. We chant shaanti thrice to emphasize our intensedesire <strong>for</strong> peace. All obstacles, problems and sorrows originate from threesources.Aadhidaivika: The unseen divine <strong>for</strong>ces over which we have little or nocontrol like earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions etc.Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS)43


SeptemberDharmaAadhibhautika: The known factors around us like accidents, humancontacts, pollution, crime etc.Aadhyaatmika: We sincerely pray to <strong>the</strong> Lord that at least while weundertake special tasks or even in our daily lives, <strong>the</strong>re are no problems orthat, problems are minimized from <strong>the</strong> three sources written about above.May peace alone prevail. Hence shaanti is chanted thrice.Why do we do aarati?Towards <strong>the</strong> end of every ritualistic worship (pooja or bhajan) of <strong>the</strong> Lordor to welcome an honored guest or saint, we per<strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> aarati. This is alwaysaccompanied by <strong>the</strong> ringing of <strong>the</strong> bell and sometimes by singing, playing ofmusical instruments and clapping. It is one of <strong>the</strong> sixteen steps (shodashaupachaara) of <strong>the</strong> pooja ritual. It is referred to as <strong>the</strong> lighted lamp in <strong>the</strong> righthand, which we wave in a clockwise circling movement to light <strong>the</strong> entire <strong>for</strong>mof <strong>the</strong> Lord. Each part is revealed individually and also <strong>the</strong> entire <strong>for</strong>m of <strong>the</strong>Lord. As <strong>the</strong> light is waved we ei<strong>the</strong>r do mental or loud chanting of prayers orsimply behold <strong>the</strong> beautiful <strong>for</strong>m of <strong>the</strong> Lord, illumined by <strong>the</strong> lamp. At <strong>the</strong>end of <strong>the</strong> aarati we place our hands over <strong>the</strong> flame and <strong>the</strong>n gently touch oureyes and <strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong> head.We have seen and participated in this ritual from our childhood. Let usfind out why we do <strong>the</strong> aarati?Having worshipped <strong>the</strong> Lord of love - per<strong>for</strong>ming abhisheka, decorating<strong>the</strong> image and offering fruits and delicacies, we see <strong>the</strong> beauty of <strong>the</strong> Lordin all His glory. Our minds are focussed on each limb of <strong>the</strong> Lord as <strong>the</strong>lamp lights it up. It is akin to silent open-eyed meditation on His beauty. Thesinging, clapping, ringing of <strong>the</strong> bell etc. denote <strong>the</strong> joy and auspiciousnesswhich accompanies <strong>the</strong> vision of <strong>the</strong> Lord.Aarati is often per<strong>for</strong>med with camphor. This holds a telling spiritualsignificance. Camphor when lit, burns itself out completely without leaving atrace of it. It represents our inherent tendencies (vaasanas). When lit by <strong>the</strong>fire of knowledge which illumines <strong>the</strong> Lord (Truth), our vaasanas <strong>the</strong>reafterburn <strong>the</strong>mselves out completely, not leaving a trace of ego which creates inus a sense of individuality that keeps us separate from <strong>the</strong> Lord. Also whilecamphor burns to reveal <strong>the</strong> glory of Lord, it emits a pleasant perfume evenwhile it sacrifices itself. We often wait a long while to see <strong>the</strong> illuminedLord but when <strong>the</strong> aarati is actually per<strong>for</strong>med, our eyes close automaticallyas if to look within. This is to signify that each of us is a temple of <strong>the</strong> Lord.Just as <strong>the</strong> priest reveals <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>m of <strong>the</strong> Lord clearly with <strong>the</strong> aaratiflame, so too <strong>the</strong> guru reveals to us <strong>the</strong> divinity within each of us with <strong>the</strong> helpof <strong>the</strong> “flame” of knowledge. At <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> aarati, we place our hands over<strong>the</strong> flame and <strong>the</strong>n touch our eyes and <strong>the</strong> top of <strong>the</strong> head. It means - may<strong>the</strong> light that illuminated <strong>the</strong> Lord light up my vision; may my vision be divineand my thoughts noble and beautiful.The philosophical meaning of aarati extends fur<strong>the</strong>r. The sun, moon,stars, lightning and fire are <strong>the</strong> natural sources of light. The Lord is <strong>the</strong> sourceof this wonderful phenomenon of <strong>the</strong> universe. It is due to Him alone that allelse exist and shine. Below are some of <strong>the</strong> qualities that we have toimbibe in us to become an ideal Swayamsevak/Sevika. <strong>Balagokulam</strong>’s weekly andoccasional activities help us to cultivate such qualities in us.One should respect to Parents, Guru (Teacher) and all living and nonlivingentities. One should love towards self, family, friends, society and country.Remember <strong>the</strong> story of Sravana Kumar, who took care of his blind parents. He isour ideal, our role model.Be good and helpful to o<strong>the</strong>rs. Can you remember <strong>the</strong> best and idealSwaymasevak? Yes, Lord Hanuman. Try to finish scheduled tasks in time.A simple habbit of keeping our shoes in line whereever we leave <strong>the</strong>m, whe<strong>the</strong>r atHome, Shakha, Temple or any place reflects your discipline. King Shivaji’s soldiers,though less in number, could easily overcome Afzal Khan just because <strong>the</strong>y weredisciplined. Maintain cleanliness, be polite in speech and actions, etc. Can you thinkof some examples in our history who were role models in good habits like this?Be strong and healthy physically and emotionally.
