Ray <strong>the</strong>nwent on to win <strong>the</strong> 2009 series of Dancing onIce. Since <strong>the</strong>n, Ray has enjoyed a successfulstage career starring in <strong>the</strong> musicals LegallyBlonde <strong>the</strong> Musical, Dirty Dancing andGrease, where he played <strong>the</strong> iconic role ofDanny Zuko.Also starring in this year’s festivespectacular is ano<strong>the</strong>r Brookside’s LouisEmerick, who is starring as <strong>the</strong> ultimate‘boo hiss’ baddie Captain Hook. LateWorks 1950–1954 <strong>the</strong> Hayward TouringExhibition will open at The Atkinson nextFebruary.The French painter, sculptor and designer,Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was one of <strong>the</strong>20th century’s most influential artists. Hisvibrant works are celebrated for <strong>the</strong>irextraordinary richness and luminosity ofcolour.Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, from <strong>the</strong>Southbank Centre, London features 35lithographic prints of <strong>the</strong> famous cut–outs,produced in <strong>the</strong> last four years of his life,when <strong>the</strong> artist was confined to his bed. Itincludes many of his iconic images, such asThe Snail and <strong>the</strong> Blue Nudes.Matisse continued creating highly originalworks into his eighties. For his cut–outs heused paper hand–painted with gouache,laid down in abstract or figurative patterns.He said: “The paper cut–out allows me todraw in <strong>the</strong> colour. Instead of drawing <strong>the</strong>outline and putting <strong>the</strong> colour inside it. Idraw straight into <strong>the</strong> colour.” The colourshe used were so strong that he was advisedby his doctor to wear dark glasses.The lithographic reproductions in thisexhibition are taken from a special doubleissue of Verve, a review of art and literature,published by Tériade, a major publisher offine art books in 1958.Jane Brown, The Atkinson’s Museum andGallery officer said: “It is exciting to be ableto bring such as high quality exhibition fromone of <strong>the</strong> world’s most famous artists to<strong>the</strong> Atkinson.”Matisse began his working life as a lawyer,before going to Paris to study art in 1890.
