Dr. Richard Collings 

Each year, the Wayne State Foundation 

honors the alumni and friends who 

have made a difference in the lives of 

Wayne State students, staff and faculty 

through their generous donations. This 

Honor Roll lists the names of each donor, 

large and small, who has invested in the 

educational mission of the college. We 

also believe that the best honor we can 

bestow upon you is to live up to the college’s 

commitment to excellence. And we were 

quite excellent this past year. 

Wayne State faculty members consistently receive grants and awards that demonstrate their 

excellence among their peers. Dr. Catherine Rudin, professor of language and literature at Wayne 

State College, along with a colleague at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was awarded a threeyear, 

$348,800 grant to develop a digital dictionary of the Omaha-Ponca language. The grant is 

part of a joint National Science Foundation/National Endowment for the Humanities initiative, the 

"Documenting Endangered Languages" program. 

Another notable example of excellence was the naming of Dr. Todd Young, associate professor 

of physics and astronomy at Wayne State College, as the recipient of the Rebensdorf Teaching 

Excellence Award from the Nebraska State College System. The Rebensdorf Teaching Excellence 

Award is presented annually to a faculty member who demonstrates innovation and leadership 

in teaching and service in the Nebraska State College System, which includes Chadron, Peru, 

and Wayne State Colleges. Several Wayne State College faculty members have won this statewide 

award over the years, including Clif Ginn, Cornell Runestad, Russ Rasmussen, Ken Halsey, Pearl 

Hansen, Deborah Whitt, Jean Karlen, Mary Ettel, Jason Karsky and Tami Worner. 

Wayne State also measures the excellence of its programs by the level of service the college 

provides to its region. College service-learning efforts during the fall 2007 semester involved more 

than 1,050 student participants in projects from a variety of courses and disciplines. This level 

of participation is the highest recorded for Wayne State College and speaks well of our students’ 

service to community. 

Twenty-four faculty members and six campus organizations involved more than 40 community partners in 

opportunities to learn through serving others. A solid majority of students, faculty members and community 

partners noted on service-learning assessment surveys that their involvement in service-learning was 

mutually beneficial. Students remarked that their "hands-on" service-learning participation confirmed their 

career aspirations. Community partners stated their appreciation of the opportunity to teach and learn 

alongside students and faculty. This constructive interaction also strengthens bonds between the campus 

and the surrounding community. 

Various aspects of the college’s excellence have been reported in the recent college rankings released by 

U.S. News & World Report. The data presented in the annual survey noted several key categories in which 

Wayne State continues to live up to the ideals of its mission. Some highlights of this year’s rankings: Wayne 

State has the 4th highest retention rate (75%) among Tier Three Master’s colleges and universities; the 

2nd highest alumni giving rate among Tier Three Master’s colleges and universities and the 26th highest 

alumni giving rate among all 146 Tier Three Midwestern Master’s colleges and universities; and the college 

is among the top 3 most affordable schools for all Midwestern Master’s colleges and universities. 

The college also excelled outside of the classroom as our student-athletes reached several important 

milestones in Division II sports. Wayne State College placed second in the 2007-08 Northern Sun 

Intercollegiate Conference All-Sports Standings released by the NSIC office May 20. The Wildcats finished 

with 78.5 points, trailing only Winona State. Wayne State had 11 of its 15 sports finish in the top three of 

their respective sports in the conference championships this season. 

Wayne State College won two NSIC championships this season, capturing league titles in baseball and 

men’s outdoor track and field. The Wildcats placed second in men’s cross country, women’s cross country 

and women’s basketball while football tied for second. Volleyball, men’s and women’s indoor track and 

field, softball and women’s outdoor track and field each collected third-place finishes. 

Another milestone achieved by the WSC athletic department was a first-ever finish in the top 100 of the 

2007-08 U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup. Of the 230 NCAA Division II schools listed in the standings, 

Wayne State placed 100th with a point total of 184.50. Points are awarded based on the national finish of 

each men’s and women’s team in NCAA Division II. 

These examples are just a few of the many points of excellence from the past year. We thank you for 

continuing to honor us with your support. And we take great pride in honoring you by making excellence a 

central part of our mission.

My two-year term as president of the Wayne State Foundation came to an end at the annual meeting held Oct. 10, 2008, but my active involvement with the 

foundation will continue. We have made tremendous progress in building the endowment and securing resources to address the strategic needs of Wayne State 

College but there is more work to be done. I encourage you all to join me and continue your commitment to the growth and development of Wayne State College. 

Because the Honor Roll of Donors is published to recognize and thank everyone who has made a contribution to Wayne State College, I want to focus on the 

foundation’s fund raising success and cite some examples of the resulting impact on the college. 

• Received cash gifts and pledges of $3.05 million. 

• Assets grew by 7.3% to $16.2 million. 

• Endowment grew by $700,000 to $11.3 million. 

• Endowment investments had a negative return of only 2.5%. 

• Scholarship awards totaled $857,000 to 668 students, an increase of more than $180,000. 

• Transferred ownership of property, purchased years ago by the foundation because of its strategic location to the college. 

• Purchased property this year because of its strategic location to the college and will transfer it when the college is ready for it. 

• Holding designated gifts and collecting pledges for the foundation’s portion of the Phase I renovation costs of Carhart Science Building, 

which will begin in the summer of 2009. 

As a donor, a trustee of the foundation and an alumna, I am proud of the growing academic reputation of Wayne State College, of caring faculty and staff who 

have created a student-centered environment and of knowing college leaders who have carefully stewarded resources to keep the college strong. My family and 

I contribute knowing our gifts will be used wisely. Thank you for joining us in supporting Wayne State College. Together our impact is multiplied. 

It is with enduring gratitude that we honor your gifts by publishing this report. 

The Wayne State Foundation’s fiscal year ended June 30, 2008, with a record year in fund raising: the Foundation reached for the first time in its history more than 

$3 million in contributions. Estate gifts made the difference with nearly $1 million received, well beyond what the foundation has realized in previous years. 

These legacy gifts will have an amazing impact on Wayne State College students year after year because they were primarily endowed scholarships that will keep 

generating a scholarship award every year in perpetuity. The endowed scholarships are listed on pages 9 and 10, and they are named in honor of either the donor 

or in memory of a loved one. Scholarships have been a focus of the foundation since its founding in 1961. Alumni have responded to this need because of the 

personal and rewarding connection it creates with individual students who are grateful for the opportunities they are given. 

But perhaps just as important are the estate gifts that come in unrestricted. Such gifts allow the foundation to use them for the greatest needs of the college or 

to generate other gifts, whereby collectively the gifts can be the impetus to address a strategic initiative of the college. 

The Wayne State Foundation staff is very fortunate to have the opportunity to meet many of our alumni, and they tell us that their experiences and education at 

the college changed their lives in so many positive ways. We value these exchanges with alumni and the support they provide to Wayne State College. Please 

remember that all gifts are important to the foundation, in any amount. We have power in numbers and together we can continue to strengthen this college we 

love. You clearly demonstrated your commitment this year by placing Wayne State College in the second highest alumni giving rate category among its peers, as 

reported in U.S News & World Report College Rankings.

Circle of Excellence 

The Circle of Excellence is the highest recognition given to donors for their contributions during the year. It is reserved for alumni, 

friends and businesses who contributed $100,000 or more during the reporting period of this Honor Roll of Donors. 

Members of the Circle of Excellence receive all of the benefits and privileges of belonging to the Presidents Society. Upon initial entry 

into the Circle, they receive special recognition in the Honor Roll of Donors. 

George ‘56 and Susan (Reeh ‘55) Menking 

Susan and George Menking 

Susan (Reeh '55) and George Menking '56 funded a gift 

annuity with the residual unrestricted to fund the greatest needs 

of the college. The Menkings, longtime supporters of Wayne State 

College, created the first psychology scholarship at Wayne State 

College in 2007, which set aside funds for a full-time Wayne State 

student majoring in psychology who demonstrates financial need. 

George was a math and chemistry major at Wayne State. He 

lettered in track, played in the band and belonged to several honor 

societies. Susan majored in English, finding the time to also play in 

the band, sing in the choir and earn induction into honor societies. 

George and Susan are originally from Blair, Neb. 

George spent the majority of his career as the managing 

partner and chief actuary of Cooper's and Lybrand's (now 

PricewaterhouseCoopers) actuarial and benefits consulting practice 

in Dallas and New York. After earning her Ph.D., Susan practiced 

psychology in Dallas, New York and Santa Fe. After raising their 

children and many successful years in their careers, George and 

Susan retired to Santa Fe, N. Mex., and the Phoenix area. The 

Menkings said they keep busy traveling around the world. 

Trustees of the Gardner Foundation include Leslie A. (Gardner) Bebee, 

Jeanne M. Gardner, Kirk N. Gardner and David J. Gardner. 

Dr. Jerry Krause 

Dr. Jerry Krause of Spokane, Wash., a 1959 graduate of Wayne State College, 

funded the Jerry Krause Physical Education Endowed Scholarship. First preference for 

the scholarship is given to members of the men's and women's basketball teams and 

second preference to students in the Federal 

Work Study Program. 

Krause was the recipient of the Alumni 

Achievement Award presented at the 2007 

WSC Winter Commencement. He serves as 

the director of men’s basketball operations 

at Gonzaga University, where he oversees the 

day-to-day operations of the men's basketball 

office, scheduling, player evaluations and video 

operations. 

He has written more than 30 books on 

coaching basketball, produced 31 instructional 

videos, six DVD’s, two CD’s and serves as a 

consultant to many athletic organizations. 

He is the most widely published coach in 

basketball history.

The Gardner Foundation 

The trustees of the Gardner Foundation of Wakefield, Neb., 

include Jeanne M. Gardner, David J. Gardner, Kirk N. Gardner and 

Leslie A. (Gardner) Bebee. Founder Daniel W. Gardner died in 

January 2001. 

The Gardner Foundation has played a major role in every 

fundraising initiative launched by Wayne State College and is a 

vital partner in the success of the foundation and the college as 

it moves forward to fulfill its mission of excellence in teaching 

and learning and regional service and development. It is with a

Although a gift of any size may be designated for scholarships, a minimum principal balance of $10,000 is required for a named endowed scholarship although

The phonathon serves as an integral part of the Wayne State Foundation and Alumni office activities to update 

alumni addresses, raise unrestricted support for the college’s priorities and share information about the campus. 

Calls from phonathon student workers allow us to stay in touch with more than 24,000 alumni and friends. 

The college relies on the talents of approximately 60 enthusiastic, hardworking students to call alumni and 

friends nightly from Sunday through Thursday during January, February and March. This ambitious calling program 

is led by four student managers and foundation and alumni staff. 

Last year’s phonathon raised $197,819 in gifts and pledges from alumni and friends. These funds provide 

academic and athletic scholarships; support programs and special campus projects; promote faculty and staff 

development; and supply resources for publications. As state funding decreases, these donations become ever more 

essential. The percentage of alumni giving is viewed as a measure of educational satisfaction and is one of the 

determining factors when we apply for grants for the college. 

In January, February or March, an energetic and dedicated student caller will be contacting you to update your 

address and to ask for your tax-deductible contribution to support many worthy programs. The federal government 

realizes private giving is essential for college campuses; therefore, Wayne State College is exempt from the Do-Not- 

Call registry.

Expands Scholarship Program 

The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation 

provides scholarships for tuition and fees up to 

$3,200 per semester and a textbook allowance of 

$400 per semester for undergraduate students 

attending Nebraska public universities, colleges, 

or community colleges. These funds are available 

to the extent that tuition, fees and books are not 

already covered by other grants or scholarships. 

The foundation expanded the scholarship 

program for the 2007-2008 academic year, 

which pushed the number of Wayne State College 

students benefiting from the foundation’s funds 

from 24 students in 2006-2007 to 43 in 2007- 

2008. Wayne State is grateful to the Susan 

Thompson Buffett Foundation for its commitment 

to providing access to education at Nebraska’s 

public colleges and universities.

Cornerstone Society 

The Cornerstone Society was established in 1998 to recognize 

cumulative contributions to the Wayne State Foundation of $10,000 

and above. It honors donors for their loyal and continuous support 

with a major recognition wall in the student center atrium. It states: 

“With each gift comes an ever-growing bond with the college, faculty 

and students and the knowledge that your generosity is significantly 

impacting Wayne State College.” 

The Cornerstone Society was developed to allow the college to 

properly acknowledge donors as they move to higher categories of

The Heritage Society was established to recognize and honor, during their lifetimes, the alumni 

and friends whose vision and generosity move them to support Wayne State College through an 

estate gift to the Wayne State Foundation. 

Membership in the Heritage Society is open to alumni and friends who have made arrangements 

for a future gift to the foundation through one or more of the following: 

• Specific provision in their will • Creation of a charitable trust • Life insurance policy 

• Gift of real estate • Charitable gift annuity 

Members receive acknowledgement including an engraved nameplate on the Heritage Society 

wall plaque in the Student Center and a listing in the Annual Honor Roll of Donors. Members 

who request confidentiality will remain anonymous.
