RopeThroughout history, sailors have wanted the same things from their standing and running rigging as they do today. Ifa rigger from 1640 could sit down with the team outfitting a modern racing yacht, they would understand each other.Strength, good hand, long wearing resistance to chafe, friendliness to marlinspike work, elasticity or inelasticity dependingon application—these are characteristics that sailors have always demanded of rope. Today the choices in materialare wider than ever. We are pleased to offer a range of both synthetic and natural fiber ropes chosen for their virtues inrigging applications.Buff Polyester and Posh IIThe result of lessons learned from sea service and lab analysis, Posh II and BuffPolyester are our premium spun polyester three-strand ropes. Polyester as a fiberis unmatched for UV resistance. Spun fibers give it superior hand, and beingpre-stretched and heat-treated at the factory, its strength and stretch resistance aregood. Buff Polyester tends to be slightly harder laid, making it a good choice forhalyards; the slightly softer Posh II makes it a good choice for sheets.Posh IIPoseidonDouble BraidHempex 3-strandHemp NaturalPoseidon Double BraidThis is a premium filament polyester braided rope that combines superior strength,hand and stretch characteristics with the look of braided Italian hemp rope whichwas coming into use in yachts after the Second World War.HempexHempex is the most like real hemp of all the rope we carry. Made of spunpolypropylene, its hand is good, its lay firm, and it is the best of our ropes withregard to marlinspike work. Light and inexpensive, Hempex is a good choice forapplications where authenticity is particularly important.Hemp Natural Three‐StrandThis is the real thing, not the prickly stuff many sailors have come to associate withthe term “natural fiber.” Firmly laid of long strand hemp, this three-strand rope isstrong and stretch resistant. As in the old days, it requires care in order to retain itsqualities in service, but for those wishing to use what would have been used backthen, this rope will not disappoint.Filament Polyester Three‐StrandMade from long strand filament (as opposed to spun fibers which are shorter), thisthree-strand rope has superior strength and stretch resistance, making it particularlygood for halyards, braces and running backstay falls. Japanese Saws and BladesWe carry the three major types of Japanese saws differentiated by the type of blade which in turnqualifies its function: DOZUKI translates as a saw with a stiffening spine. It has a spine along one edgeof the blade, and allows shallow but accurate cuts. RYOBA has a two-sided blade (two cuttingedges); one side has rip-saw blade teeth and the other is a cross-cut toothed blade. KATAHA(KATABA) is a spineless, single edged saw. It allows for deeper cuts. Most saws have replaceableblades, and some have handles sold separately. If you do not see what you are looking for please callus.
