One of reasons is because I hope to do research with internationallyrecognized HCI labs which will help my future career development. There is a huge potential market associated with human-computer interaction, since these interfaces can beembedded in any form of product and could be attached at any part of the body. However, these machines arenot naturally occurring and require user-centred design research to innovate the content and the interaction forbetter quality of use. Such research is multidisciplinary, thus there are market opportunities and threats, whichare the motivation for my research. It is also my belief that my research could bring people a better future.Tin-Kai (Ken) Chen 11/10/20093

Previous WorksFirstly, my PhD study aimed to reveal the effects of an emerging sensor(s) interaction on human beings, basedon user-centred design, and to recommend design guidelines for future research. I designed a sensor-basedinterface to reveal its effects on human beings and recommend design guidelines for future research. It is an"off-desktop", "natural", "relaxed" alternative pointing device that can be operated in the air, rather like the WiiRemote and Logitech Air Max Mouse. With respect to the working prototype, it is a ready-for-marketing product(i.e. CE approval, ready for production) with full design verification and validation based on ISO 9241 and ISO13407. Based on my research, it is stable, high speed and with an accuracy similar to a desktop mouse andbetter than a handheld trace-ball mouse. It has a high throughput rate in pointing performance (i.e. 3.5 bps),accuracy (i.e. less than 4% error rate) and low power-consumption. It is easy-to-use, useful, clear, low cost, wireless and wearable. It has the potential to become ubiquitous. During this case study, the improvement of theproduct was based on the analysis of written comments given by users. Moreover, I have achieved the following three objectives: Firstly, I designed a web-based design validationplatform based on a system architecture involving Apache + PHP + CSS + FLASH(CS2) + JAVA. This was usedto collect a massive amount of objective data about human beings in order to validate the design changes and toquantify the product requirements.VisionI will expand my knowledge base and ability throughout my career development and apply for extra-funding tosupport the design and research for education, eldercare and healthcare industries. I believe that doing PhD v2will not contribute to my competitive edge, so I hope to explore multi-objective landscapes in the future.REFEREED JOURNAL ARTICLES2009 Chen, C.C., Chu, C.C., Yang, H.J. and Chen, T.K. 2008, An Investigation into the Effect of GestureInteraction in Relation to Human Performance for Identifying Possible Design Failures, InternationalTransactions on Systems Science and Applications (ITSSA)(to be appeared).2008 Chen, C.C. and Chen, T.K. 2008, Special Issue: The Effect of Gender-Related Difference onHuman-Centred Performance Using a Mass Assessment Method, International Journal of ComputerApplications in Technology (IJCAT), 32 (4), pp. 322 – 333.PEER REVIEWED CONFERENCE PAPERS2009 Chen, T.K. and Wang, G.L. 2009, An Initial Study into the Context of Use of a Web-BasedPrognostics Scoring System that Supports the Aged Day-Care Service (ADCS) in Taiwan, inProceedings of IEEE – Prognostics & System Health Management Conference 2010 (PHM-2010Macau)(Abstract accepted).2009 Chen, C.C. and Chen, T.K. 2009, Extension of Fitts’ Law for the design of the gesture pointinginteraction: The effect of the phenomenon of discrete cursor movement on the usability of gesturebasedpointing devices, in Proceedings of 3rd IASDR 2009 on Design, Rigor & Relevance (To beappeared)Chen, C.C., Fang, H.L. and Chen, T.K. 2009, Three-dimensional studies among normal hairdressers:Upper extremity kinematics during functional activities for a hair-blow-drying task, in Proceedings of3rd IASDR 2009 on Design, Rigor & Relevance (To be appeared)2008 Wu, F.G., Chen, C.C. and Chen, T.K. 2008, A User-Centred Design Case Study of a Novel Gesture-Based Pointing Device, in Proceedings of CREATE 2008 on Embedding People-centred Design inthe Process of Innovation’, (Ergonomics Society HCI Group & British computer Society, London,U.K.).Tin-Kai (Ken) Chen 11/10/20094
