WELCOME TO THE 2012 GEO-CONGRESS
FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIRS
On behalf of the organizing committee, we welcome you to Geo-Congress
2012!
The challenges that our Profession is facing are great: ageing infrastructure,
increased natural hazards, elevated infrastructure performance requirements (to
name a few) in an increasingly competitive and weak global economy. Such
challenges raise the expectations for geo-professionals.
Geo-Congress 2012 is the first Geo-Institute Congress that focuses on the
“State of the Art and Practice in Geotechnical Engineering.” Our vision is that this
conference will provide a truly unprecedented opportunity to integrate the latest
research advances with the current engineering practices. Our metric for success of
this conference is not just the attendance of geotechnical researchers, but the strong
attendance of practicing geo-professionals from the United States and worldwide.
To achieve that, the organizing committee has put together a program that we think
is truly unique and includes technical sessions, panel discussions, outstanding fullday
and half-day short courses, social events, and a USUCGER workshop, as well
as the distinguished Terzaghi, Peck and Seed lectures.
A major deviation of this conference from previous ASCE Geo-Institute
Geo-Congresses, is the 30 State-of-the-Art and State-of-the-Practice keynote lectures
delivered by a truly outstanding group of speakers, largely selected by the technical
committees of the Geo-Institute. These lectures (and accompanying papers) span
the entire breadth of geotechnical engineering research, practice and education
and provide an overview of our Profession.
The conference program includes the oral presentation of 346 papers and
the poster presentation of 118 papers. Posters have not been the norm in previous
Geo-Congresses, but they are necessary for a conference of this size and breadth.
All papers have been peer-reviewed and are of the highest standard; the session
chairs made their decisions based on the need to create a common thread for the
papers presented in their session.
This program has also a strong student activities program that we think is
critical in retaining a diverse and strong group of students who will shape our
Profession’s future.
This conference summarizes the present and hopefully helps shape a bright
future in the geotechnical Profession. We thank you for being part of that effort.
On behalf of the organizing committee, welcome to Oakland!
