UNG <strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Policy</strong><strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> <strong>Waiver</strong> <strong>Requests</strong>Full-time students who are accepted on the Dahlonega campus <strong>of</strong> UNG and who have notearned 60 semester hours or lived four semesters in university housing must live on campus.Students may live <strong>of</strong>f-campus if:• they live with and commute daily from the permanent legal residence <strong>of</strong> parent(s) orgrandparent(s) within a fifty-mile radius from campus• married or divorced• 21 years <strong>of</strong> age or older• have completed two years <strong>of</strong> successful active military service• A waiver <strong>of</strong> this policy will be considered in individual cases for unique hardships. Prospectivestudents should submit requests to the Office <strong>of</strong> Undergraduate Admissions.Find the policy on the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> website at http://ung.edu/undergraduateadmissions/ung-residence-policy.phpStudents who live on campus for their first two years:• Meet more diverse people• Develop stronger interpersonal skills• Are more likely to hold leadership roles on campus• Have more contact with faculty, staff, and other students• Earn higher GPAs• Are more likely to graduate on time<strong>Requests</strong> for a waiver <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> should be based on a unique hardship and notsimply on a preference to live <strong>of</strong>f-campus. This policy is part <strong>of</strong> the UNG experience on theDahlonega campus and has a positive impact on students and the Dahlonega <strong>University</strong>community.A student requesting a waiver <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> should put his/her request in writing(email is acceptable) to the Dean <strong>of</strong> Students at dean<strong>of</strong>students-dah@ung.edu. The requestshould outline the details related to the unique hardship and should include any documentsthat would support or verify the hardship need.• Example: A student requesting a waiver based on a medical need should includeappropriate medical documentation from a physician or appropriate student disabilitydocumentation.


• Example: A student requesting a waiver based on a unique financial hardship shouldinclude appropriate Financial Aid paperwork including Pell eligibility and additionfinancial aid review.Approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> waiver does NOT release a student from his/her current housingcontract obligations. The student should review the Housing Contract for contract cancelationterms.Because <strong>of</strong> the lack <strong>of</strong> available housing over the last year, the <strong>Residence</strong> Life Office has issuedtemporary waivers <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Residence</strong> <strong>Policy</strong>. These waivers are given to returning studentsduring the normal housing application process in March and April prior to the Fall semester.These waivers are NOT based on unique hardship, and are only <strong>of</strong>fered during a limited time asthe <strong>University</strong> recognized the impact <strong>of</strong> living on campus during the first two years.
