President's Message 

Welcome to your Foundation’s Annual Report. We enjoyed another invigorating year filled with accomplishment, 

celebration, but a little sadness. During a time of almost unprecedented economic 

challenges the Foundation fared far better than many of our philanthropic peers. A glance at page 25 

of this Annual Report will show you that, consistent with the past few years, the Foundation again 

increased its assets by around half a million dollars in the twelve months up to June 2009. Two factors 

contributed to this trend. 

First, when the markets were tumbling, the Foundation had less than half of its assets in mutual funds 

with a large amount in cash and around a million dollars in annuities. This was not a textbook strategy, 

but one that, in retrospect, served us very well. 

Second, the Foundation has continued to receive outstanding support from both individual and 

corporate donors. In late 2008, the Foundation received $200,000 from the estate of Jill Mertz, widow 

of former Foundation President George Mertz. For the past five years, the Mertz Endowment has supported 

an Ezell Fellow, but in 2010 the Foundation will announce an exciting new use for the funds. In 

2009, the Foundation received a very generous $240,000 commitment from long-time AOF supporter 

Michael G. Harris to endow an Ezell Fellowship. In a similar fashion, Essilor continued its support of 

the Foundation’s mission by endowing an Ezell Fellowship in honor of industry leader Mike Daley. 

Essilor also sponsored a matching challenge at Academy 2009 Orlando and partnered with the Foundation 

on three Optical Technology Grants. 

The year saw a few milestones for the Foundation. We awarded the first Ezell Fellowship to honor former 

Academy President and leadership advocate Merton C. Flom. The Primary Care Section completed 

their goal of raising $80,000 for the Douglas Hopkins Primary Care Fellowship. The Foundation supported 

twelve more Ezell Fellows and welcomed the third class of Carl Zeiss Vision Fellows. Finally, for 

the first time we received over $100,000 in donations at the Annual Meeting in Orlando. 

The year was not without some sadness as we remember the loss of some of optometry’s best—Elmer 

Eger, J. Pat Cummings and, just prior to the Annual Meeting, former Academy President, N. Rex 

Ghormley. Again, thanks to the generosity of Foundation supporters all three will be remembered each 

year with an annual scholarship or award. See the following pages for details. 

We invite you to enjoy this report. The AOF is the Academy’s Foundation, your Foundation, and we 

can all take great pride in its growth, the outstanding talent we support, and the achievements of those 

in who we have invested. Enjoy the photographs of Academy friends and learn more about the Foundation’s

MICHAEL G. HARRIS EZELL FELLOWSHIP 

Foundation News 

The Foundation has received a $240,000 commitment to establish the Michael G. Harris Ezell 

Fellowship. This award will provide support for an optometrist pursuing graduate work in education, 

public policy, public health, or related areas. Michael has a history of leadership and philanthropy, 

further demonstrated by this magnificent gift. The Foundation will award the first Harris Ezell 

Fellowship in 2010. 

ESSILOR MIKE DALEY ENDOWMENT 

Essilor honored long-time leader and industry stand-out Mike Daley by endowing an Ezell 

Fellowship in his name. Mike was surprised at the Annual Meeting by his Essilor colleagues and was 

recognized at the Foundation’s Celebration Luncheon. The $240,000 pledge will be completed over 

four years with the first Daley Ezell Fellowship to be awarded in 2011. 

MERTON C. FLOM 

In 2009, the Foundation awarded its first Merton C. Flom Ezell Fellowship. Mert is a former Ezell 

Fellow, a former Academy President, and an academic leader of our profession in every sense. His 

passion for training, research, and leadership led the Flom family to make significant lead pledges 

to establish this Ezell Fellowship with an emphasis on leadership. The fund is nearly at its original 

goal and gifts and pledges are welcomed. As this Annual Report was being prepared, the Foundation 

was saddened to learn of Mert’s passing at his home in Tucson, Arizona. Foundation President Tony 

Adams spoke at the memorial service and emphasized Mert’s legacy in research, education, and 

leadership. 

AAO PRIMARY CARE SECTION COMPLETES ENDOWMENT 

Douglas Hopkins, OD, FAAO, a leader in the Primary Care Section and the Academy passed 

unexpectedly in 2007. Family and friends established the Douglas Hopkins Primary Care Fellowship 

with a goal of $80,000. This goal was reached at Academy 2009 Orlando and the first Fellowship will 

be awarded in 2010. 

Foundation News 

ELMER H. EGER STUDENT TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP 

Elmer H. Eger, OD, FAAO, passed away on June 26, 2009. Elmer is the father of Academy President 

Mark W. Eger and grandfather of Academy Fellow Noah Eger. Elmer was a Life Fellow of the 

Academy, and served 10 years on the Admittance Committee. Even in retirement, Elmer continued 

to work in the field of low vision, researching and writing extensively. His family requested that 

donations in his honor and memory be made to the Foundation and the Elmer H. Eger Fund was 

established. Over $15,000 was raised, including a generous lead gift from the Eger family. The fund 

will sponsor an optometry student every year to attend the Academy Meeting. 

N. REX GHORMLEY 

Dr. N. Rex Ghormley, Past President of the Academy, passed away on November 4, 2009. Rex helped 

make the Academy’s Annual Meeting one of the top educational meetings in optometry. He was a 

Diplomate of the Academy's Section on Cornea and Contact Lenses and recipient of the Eminent 

Service Award. Rex's wish was that memorial donations be made to the Rex Ghormley Fund of the 

American Optometric Foundation. Over $20,000 has already been contributed and the Foundation 

will work with Rex's family to establish an annual scholarship, fellowship, or award in his honor. 

J. PAT CUMMINGS ACUVUE® SCHOLARSHIP 

This past July, the optometry community unexpectedly lost a dear friend and staunch supporter- 

J. Pat Cummings. He served as the 81st AOA President and joined Vistakon in 2003 as Vice 

President of Professional Affairs. To honor Pat’s contributions, the Foundation was delighted to 

rename the ACUVUE® Eye Health Advisor Student Citizenship Scholarship as the J. Pat Cummings 

ACUVUE® Scholarship. These awards are intended to recognize outstanding second or thirdyear 

clinicians who best exemplify ideal eye care standards of practice and reflect the commitment 

embodied by Pat. One recipient of the $1000 scholarship is chosen annually by each of the 19 

schools and colleges of optometry.

The William C. Ezell Fellowships were established to provide financial support to postgraduate students 

who plan to pursue an academic career in optometry and vision science. 2009 started strong with first 

award of the Merton C. Flom Ezell Fellowship in Leadership. 

ALCON FOUNDATION EZELL FELLOW

Research focus: Restoring light sensitivity to blind mice using an AAQ photoswitch molecule 

I am grateful and honored to receive the William C. Ezell Fellowship from the American 

Optometric Foundation. I would also like to thank the Alcon Foundation for providing 

the generous financial support for this prestigious award. I am thrilled to have been 

chosen to be a part of this talented group of optometric and vision science Ezell Fellows. 

This award provides an opportunity for me to establish new collaborations, expand my 

research to clinical areas, and help advance the field of vision science and optometric 

research. The Ezell Fellowship has provided encouragement for me to become a successful 

vision scientist and help bridge the gap between the clinical and basic research areas. 

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF OPTOMETRY EZELL FELLOW

Research focus: Early detection of pathology in diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular 

degeneration using polarization sensitive imaging 

I am extremely honored to be selected as a 2009 William C. Ezell Fellowship recipient. 

To be included in this elite group of dedicated contributors to vision science research and 

education is a true privilege. As a young researcher, I highly value the encouragement to 

pursue research that has the potential to impact patient care. I am also very grateful to 

the American Optometric Foundation’s sponsorship and its emphasis on advancements in

I am honored to be a recipient of the prestigious Ezell fellowship. This award has relieved 

me from much of the financial burden imposed on me by costs associated with my 

research, travel and loans. I express my sincere gratitude to Bausch & Lomb and the AOF 

for their generous support for basic research. I would also like to extend my thanks to my

Johanna Tukler Henriksson, BS Optom, MSc 

University of Houston, College of Optometry 

Research focus: Validation of mouse cornea and conjunctiva as a model for ocular surface research 

using a histological approach. Utilizing transmission electron microscopy to investigate morphological 

changes in the dry eye, with special focus on the palpebral conjunctival epithelium and goblet cells. 

As a Swedish optometrist I am deeply honored to be awarded the prestigious William C. 

Ezell Fellowship presented by the American Optometric Foundation. I sincerely want 

to thank Bausch & Lomb for generously sponsoring my award. To be one of the newest 

members of the Ezell family, where past recipients have become distinguished educators is 

a great encouragement and a tremendous inspiration to me. Receiving this fellowship as a 

young scientist will serve to stimulate me personally to achieve greater goals in my future 

academic and research career. 

IRVIN BORISH EZELL FELLOW

Research focus: Understanding molecular mechanisms that regulate the expression patterns of retinal 

ganglion axon guidance molecules and reprogramming Müller glial-derived stem cells to regenerate the 

optic nerve. 

I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to the American Optometric Foundation 

and in particular to Dr. Borish for awarding me the Borish Ezell Fellowship. This high 

recognition and generous support will drive me to strive for continuous contribution to 

optometric vision research, a dynamic field offering enormous opportunities for learning

I am greatly honored to have been selected for the prestigious Ezell fellowship. I would 

like to express my heartfelt gratitude to CIBA VISION and the American Optometric 

Foundation for providing me such generous support. This award not only showers 

financial support towards my research but also provides a great source of moral 

encouragement for my future career, academic goals and is invaluable in many aspects.
