Overweight children also sufferfrom emotional, as well as physical,side effects of their condition.The UK is currently experiencing anepidemic of obesity affecting bothadults and children, with growingconcern that obese children are morelikely to become obese adults.The Government’s ‘Healthy Lives,Healthy People’, published inOctober 2011, has aimed to spark adownward trend in excess for thepopulation by 2020.The National Child MeasurementProgramme (NCMP) annuallymeasures the height and weight ofchildren, returning the data to theHealth and Social Care InformationCentre.As of 1 April, delivery of the NCMP isone of the statutory public healthduties that has been transitioned tolocal authorities.Local authorities are now under aduty to collect data from every statemaintained school.Over 99% of schools, with 93% ofeligible children, participate in theNCMP across England, making thefindings, it is claimed, ‘robust andreliable’ at a national and local level.The spokesman for the LocalAuthority added: “Parents and carerscan access a range of initiatives toensure their children are physicallyactive for at least 60 minutes everyday and eat a healthy balanced diet.“We encourage them to get involvedbecause the only way we cansuccessfully reduce obesity levels isthrough their help in ensuring youngpeople are physically active and ahealthy weight.“The council has many programmesincluding Active Totz and Active Kidzand Sefton’s Active SportsProgramme is the first multi projectinitiative in the UK to be awarded theprestigious ‘Inspire Mark.’“We actively encourage parents toconsent to their children being part ofthe National Child MeasurementProgramme so we can plan andprovide better health services forchildren across the borough.”ollie.cowan@champnews.comGRANITE & QUARTZ WORKTOPS ATUNBEATABLE PRICESWE WON’T BE BEATEN ON PRICEPRECISION.
