<strong>Bootle</strong>, alerted <strong>the</strong>police about <strong>the</strong>ir concerns over a woman whoappeared to be drunk and in charge of a youngchild.When police arrived at <strong>the</strong> bar on <strong>the</strong>mid–November evening <strong>the</strong>y found a man“clearly under <strong>the</strong> influence”, sitting next to apram which contained a sleeping14–month–old child.They were told by <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r, a27–year–old <strong>Bootle</strong> woman, was in <strong>the</strong>bathroom and was being aggressive towardso<strong>the</strong>r customers.Andrew Page, prosecuting at SeftonMagistrates Court on December 3, said thatwhen confronted by <strong>the</strong> police and told toleave, she became aggressive to <strong>the</strong>m too andtold <strong>the</strong>m to “f*** off”.Then after being handcuffed and arrested forbeing drunk in charge of a child, she attemptedto assault <strong>the</strong> officers, he said.James Hatton, her solicitor, told <strong>the</strong> court tha<strong>the</strong> was “struggling to recall a defendant whohad shown more contrition and remorse” andshe is “deeply ashamed and deeplyapologetic.”Saying that she is a single parent who doesn’tgo out and had suffered from post–nataldepression, he said she was invited on a lunchengagement and “didn’t intend to get drunk.”Her “son is her world,” he said, “and she feelslike she has let him down”, adding: “Theseparation from her child during <strong>the</strong> time ofher arrest has been a salutatory lesson.”Magistrates gave her a conditional dischargefor six months and – waiving costs – made herpay <strong>the</strong> victim surcharge of £15.Woman stole£500 of groceriesfrom Asda storeA WOMAN on a suspended prison sentencehas avoided jail despite being caught tryingto steal £542 worth of groceries and goodsfrom <strong>Bootle</strong>’s Asda store.Kerry McCluskie, 28, of Coleridge Street,appeared at Sefton Magistrates Court onDecember 5 following a probation servicereport.Angela Conlan, prosecuting, said that at4am on September 13 she had attempted toleave <strong>the</strong> store without paying for <strong>the</strong> itemswhen <strong>the</strong> security guard left his post, butwas stopped by him at <strong>the</strong> main door.She told <strong>the</strong> court she had been given aprison sentence suspended for two years inApril 2012 and tested positive for drugs.Mark Ellis, representing McCluskie, whohad just given birth six weeks before,referred to her doctor’s records and said:“It is clear that this lady, at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong>offence was committed, was bearing underanxiety and depression and postnataldepression.”Saying that <strong>the</strong> child had been taken fromher by social services because of her druguse, he said: “She did not know what shewas doing at <strong>the</strong> time of <strong>the</strong> offence.She was suffering from <strong>the</strong> impact of losinga very young child close to her.”The magistrates said <strong>the</strong>y weren’tactivating <strong>the</strong> sentence because of clearmedical issues and mental health problems,but would punish her by putting put her on a7pm to 7am curfew for 12 weeks.They also imposed a supervision order for12 months, with a drug rehabilitationrequirement of nine months, and made herpay costs of £90 and a victim surcharge of£60.AN aspiring design student from <strong>Bootle</strong> hasbeen congratulated by <strong>the</strong> Mayor of Seftonfor his artistic efforts as part ofRemembrance Day.Daniel David Murphy, aged 22, was askedto design a booklet that was <strong>the</strong>n handedout at services across <strong>the</strong> borough.The Hugh Baird College pupil studiesinteractive media and <strong>the</strong> class were askedto submit <strong>the</strong>ir own personal
