Other forms of playing nowadaysFrom the 1970s onwards, there was an increased interest in combining differentfolk music instruments. Jazz musicians in particular have engaged with folk music andcollaborated with folk musicians. <strong>The</strong> saxophon<strong>is</strong>t Jan Garbarek’s collaborationswith folk musicians, amongst others, the kvedar Agnes Buen Garnås and the Sam<strong>is</strong>inger Mari Boine, are examples, likew<strong>is</strong>e the bass player Arild Andersen’scollaboration with the kvedar, Kirsten Bråten Berg. In the 1970s, a large jazzensemble was formed under the name, “Søyr”, who interpreted folk musicmelodies from Østerdalen.In the 1990s, the <strong>fiddle</strong>r Håkon Høgemo combined the strains of h<strong>is</strong> <strong>fiddle</strong> withthose of Karl Seglem’s saxophone and, with music students in Oslo as the startingpoint, the Chateau Neuf Spelemannslag was formed. <strong>The</strong>y take old tunes andarrange them for Hardanger <strong>fiddle</strong>, piano, accordion, electric guitar, song,saxophones, clarinets, oboe and bagpipes.<strong>The</strong> <strong>fiddle</strong>r, Hallvard T. Bjørgum, has recorded albums with the American singer,Eric Andersen.Instruments from other countries have also been heard in combination withNorwegian traditional <strong>fiddle</strong>s, and Norwegian folk musicians have collaboratedwith colleagues from d<strong>is</strong>tant shores.
