Asymmetrical melodiesIn the majority of music we l<strong>is</strong>ten <strong>to</strong> nowadays, the melody <strong>is</strong> symmetrical. <strong>The</strong>first part of the tune can be 8 bars, which are repeated, and then there <strong>is</strong> a newpart with 8 bars, which are repeated: 8 + 8, 8 + 8.<strong>The</strong> older tunes, on the other hand, are often composed of melody lines ofvarying lengths, such <strong>that</strong> a melodic phrase can also go over an irregular numberof beats: 3, 5, 7, 9 and so on. <strong>The</strong> springar in Vestlandet, amongst others inHardanger and Jølster, often has an irregular number of beats in the melody,such <strong>that</strong> the music can be said <strong>to</strong> be in both duple and triple time. <strong>It</strong> doesn’taffect the dance, which proceeds with the same ease.
