MAYOR'S ANNUAL REPORT. 239broader purpose for which we were chartered by theLegislature, and for the accomplishment of which wewere selected, which was the collecting, preservingand diffusing information relating to the history ofthe State of (Georgia in particular and of Americanhistory generally.The new picture, La Parabola, more particularlymentioned in my last report, has been erected, andthe first of the series of panel pictures to be painted byDirector Brandt, the Sphinx, is ready for exhibition.The opening day ceremonies will be held on the 20thinst. I trust that I will not appeal in vain when Iurge every member who can possibly do so to encouragethe Society by his presence, and to bringwith him the members of his family, and some of hisfriends. Whatever course the outside public maypursue, it is the clear duty of our own members toattend our infrequent festivals and to make someactive display of their interest in the progress andaccomplishment of the Society, and in the purposeand influence of its noble and beautiful trust.Those of us who have toiled long and faithfully inthe prosecution of its worthy purposes, and for theadvancement of its promising art adjunct, are painfullyconscious that they will never witness the fruitionof their labors in their own day and generation.They know that there is at yet no general literarytaste in Savannah, and still less appreciation of, andlove for, art.That there are many natures so irresponsive andglacial that the seeds which bloom into poetry andbeauty can find no crevice in which to make a lodg-
