Herman Myers, City :DEAR SIR—It affords me the greatest pleasure totell something of the workings of the "SavannahFemale Orphan Asylum,"aninstitution inauguratedin 1810 (under above name) with the sole object ofrearing and educating the destitute girls in this sectionof the State irrespective of creed. The buildingthen was in the eastern part of the city, but this becominginadequate to the growing needs, throughthe efforts of several ladies a lot was procured atBull and Charlton streets, where an edifice waserected and occupied until 1888. It was deemedadvisable to dispose of this property and purchase themore commodious quarters at Oglethorpe and WestBroad streets, where until the present time are maintainedabout 43 girls at a cost of $106.88 per capita.This includes insurance, taxes, teachers' salaries andall necessary expenditures. The only revenue forthe support of this institution has been the subscriptionof members and income from investments obtainedthrough bequests—many of the latter havedepreciated in value. This, together with increasedcost of necessaries, has caused the Board of Managersfor the.first time in its annals to request to be placedon the "Beneficiary""list of both the city and county.The present Board are as follows:
