This was due, in a measure,to the very inclement weather during the months ofJanuary and February of 1901, which made the receiptsdiminish. The chief cause for any falling offin revenue from the market, however, is the increasedcompetition from outside sources. The rapid extensionof the city southward, carrying the population furtheraway from the market and making it more difficultto shop there, has naturally lead to an increase in thenumber of green groceries in the residence sections.
