Some of these men are untiringin their efforts to perform the duties assignedto them; others are not up to such a standard. Thework of these men is tedious and demands much patienceand intelligence—patience to deal with the occupantsof houses who, in many instances, throw everyobstacle possible in the way of a complete inspection,as well as to convince persons that their premisesmust be kept clean ; intelligence to deal with personswho are ignorant and who must be told how to preventthe accummulation of garbage and other wastematter, the care of closets, etc.The work of these men is as necessary as that of apoliceman or fireman, and, if properly performed,would be no mean factor in improving our healthconditions, and that means lowering our death rate.
