152 MA YOB'S ANNUAL REPORT.This has been clearly illustrated in almost everyportion of the city. Where water used to stand withinthree or four feet of the surface we can now digsix to seven feet without finding water. This system of house drainage, as is now in use, isin perfect working order. While the cost of the work accomplished exceededthe appropriation in 1900 $20,024.12 and in 1901$20,993.99, much of these expenses were made in repairingand rebuilding lines built strictly accordingto plans and under the personal supervision of theengineer in charge. When we recall the number ofexperienced contractors who abandoned this workafter losing money, the city is to be congratulatedthat so much has been satisfactorily completed, themore so since it has, through its department of publicworks, accomplished what experience proved waswell nigh impossible of attainment by contract. Weare still of the opinion that the cost of the completedsystem will not exceed three hundred thousand dollars.D. E. THOMAS,Chairman Special Committee on House Drainage.
