144 MAYOR'S ANNUAL REPORT.under resolution of Council November 13, 1899, theSpecial Committee of House Drainage with the Directorof Public Works were authorized to completethe House Drainage System. Very little work wasaccomplished in 1899 except to purchase materialand organize for the work, which was done in 1900.The tabulated statement attached will show a completerecord of all work done in House Drainage upto the first da}' of January of this year, 1901. Of thetotal amount spent by the city on House Drainagework for the past twelve months $18,110.95 wasspent in 1899 and $95,024.12 in 1900. The workdone by Rourke & Mitchell and Miles & Bradt, theprevious contractors on this work, was in such disjointedcondition that none of it could be put in use.No outlet to the river had been secured for the mainsewer, the 8-inch lateral lines were not connectedwith the main sewers, and flush tanks had no waterconnections. The city has in the past year (that isto say 1900) not only built 13.5 miles of severs, buthas made every line of pipe that has been laid to dateready for use.This year's work has practically completed theHouse Drainage work in the city proper. The workon Gaston, Tattnall, Huntingdon and Forty-secondstreets was very derp and in an unstable soil saturatedwith water, making the work difficult and the expensegreater than was expected. We had a numberof sewer breaks on these lines after the work wascompleted which necessitated an additional expenseof over $10,000.00 before we had these particular linesready for use.
