126 MAYOR'S ANNUAL KEPOBT.Air Lift Pumping Plant.During the month of June, the Committee onWater entered into an agreement with the Bacon AirLift Company for the installation of a temporaryAir Lift Pumping Plant, to be connected with theSpringfield well. The installation of this plant wascommenced July 3rd, and completed July 28th.The flow of the Springfield well before the installationof Air Lift was 566,720 gallons per 24 hours.While operating Air Lift, the flow was 1,210,464gallons. Showing an increase in favor of Air Liftof 643,744 gallons.During the operation of Air Lift on this well, theother 12 wells were tested to ascertain what effectthe Air Lift would have on the flow of these wells.There was a slight decrease in the flow of each well,showing that they were all supplied from the samesource. The total decrease was 149,680 gallons per24 hours.At a regular meeting of Council held Oct 2 TheCommittee on Water were authorized to call for bidsfor the complete installation of an Air Lift PumpingPlantOn October 30th, bids were received and opened.There were three bidders. The Bacon Air Lift Co.,of New York offered to put in a complete plant forthe sum of $34,825.00. The McKernan Drill Co.'sbid was §29,000.00, and the Pneumatic EngineeringCo.'s bid was $21,130.At a special meeting of Council held Nov. 1st. TheCommittee on Water were empowered to enter intoa contract for an Air Lift Pumping Plant, for theNew Pumping Station, and were authorised to ex-
MAYOR'S ANNUAL REPORT. 127pend as much as .f 25,000.00 for the complete installationof the same.The contract was awarded to the Pneumatic EngineeringCo. of New York, for the sum of $21,130.00.Old Water Works.On account of the demand for an increased supplyof water, it was found necessary on June 1st, to startthe Old Works. The small pump has been m dailyoperation since that date.On December 31st, the large pump was started forthe purpose of making some slight repairs to connectionsand valves. With the exception of these repairs,the boilers and machinery are in good condition..The works have been in operation 1939 hours; thetotal number of gallons water pumped is 241,770,720.Consumption of wood 616i cords.In conclusion, in behalf of the employes, and myself,I wish to thank your Honor, the Chairman ofWater Committee, and the Board of Aldermen fortheir hearty co-operation in the management of thisdepartment for the past year.Very respectfully,I.
