286Delavnica 4 / Workshop 4Metoda 1: Morda je najboljši nač<strong>in</strong>, da seseznanite <strong>in</strong> razumete <strong>in</strong>tegriran <strong>in</strong> celostenpristop, če se podrobno seznanite z zgodov<strong>in</strong>o,značilnostmi <strong>in</strong> okolišč<strong>in</strong>ami določenega kraja<strong>in</strong> da nadaljujete z nadgrajevanjem znanja <strong>in</strong>razumevanja v daljšem časovnem obdobju. Zelodragocena pomoč pri tem je, če pripravitesistematičen posnetek stanja, vključno stopografskimi <strong>in</strong> zgodov<strong>in</strong>skimi podatki o kraju.Začetek naj bo enostaven. Posnetek <strong>in</strong> podatkepogosto uporabljajte <strong>za</strong> referenčne namene, terjim dodajte več <strong>in</strong>formacij, ko le-te postanejodostopne.Splošna načela, do katerih pridemo pri globljemrazumevanju nekega kraja, so lahko zelokoristna, ker lahko s tem hitreje razumemo tudidruge kraje. Prav tako lažje sodelujemo skolegi iz drugih strok <strong>in</strong> poklicev, ker boljerazumemo vlogo, ki jo imajo.Metoda 2: Navadite si vzeti čas <strong>za</strong> miselnoanalizo, s<strong>in</strong>tezo, ponovno analizo <strong>in</strong> ponovnos<strong>in</strong>tezo stvari (predmetov, krajev, dogodkov,tem, itd). Anali<strong>za</strong> je postopek razstavljanja stvar<strong>in</strong>a njihove sestavne dele. Ko to naredimo, lahkoponovno združimo sestavne dele na isti,podoben ali drugačen nač<strong>in</strong>, na primer tako, dauporabimo samo obstoječe sestavne dele alidodamo nove ali odstranimo nekatere obstoječedele. S<strong>in</strong>te<strong>za</strong> se imenuje postopek združevanjaali ponovnega združevanja delov v celoto.Postopek miselne analize <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>teze lahko služikot vaja ali igra <strong>in</strong> lahko jo uporabimo <strong>za</strong> skorajkarkoli v kateremkoli položaju. Za dobre mislece,načrtovalce, umetnike, konstruktorje <strong>in</strong> vodje bito morala biti običajna <strong>in</strong> redna vešč<strong>in</strong>a. The namemay be new, but the idea is not. It is, however, anidea that needs to be more widely understoodand applied <strong>in</strong> practice.Provid<strong>in</strong>g an explanation of a concept is only onestep towards acquir<strong>in</strong>g it and putt<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong>to practice,and this raises the question of how doesone acquire the Integrated and Holistic Approachand become proficient <strong>in</strong> it? My own experiencesuggests that the follow<strong>in</strong>g 5 methodsare very helpful and they complement eachother.Method 1: Perhaps the best way to learn aboutand understand the Integrated and Holistic Approachis to become very familiar with the history,the character and the circumstances ofone particular place and to cont<strong>in</strong>ue the processof build<strong>in</strong>g up one’s knowledge and understand<strong>in</strong>gof it over a long period of time. A veryvaluable aid <strong>in</strong> this respect is to prepare a systematicSite Record, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a topographicaland historical record of the place. Start <strong>in</strong> a simpleway. Make frequent use of the Record forreference purposes, and add to it as more <strong>in</strong>formationbecomes available.The general pr<strong>in</strong>ciples that are learnt from an <strong>in</strong>depthunderstand<strong>in</strong>g of one place, can be extremelyhelpful <strong>in</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g, more quickly, to anunderstand<strong>in</strong>g of others. When the nature of the<strong>in</strong>terrelationships that operate at one place arebetter understood, it becomes much easier toth<strong>in</strong>k about others <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>tegrated and holisticway. It also becomes easier to co-operate withcolleagues from other discipl<strong>in</strong>es and professionsbecause one acquires a better understand<strong>in</strong>gof the role that they play.Method 2: Acquire the habit of tak<strong>in</strong>g time tomentally analyse, synthesise, re-analyse andresynthesise th<strong>in</strong>gs (objects, places, events,issues etc). Analysis is the process of break<strong>in</strong>gth<strong>in</strong>gs down <strong>in</strong>to their components. Hav<strong>in</strong>gdone this, one can then put the componentsback together aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> the same, a similar or adifferent way, for example by only us<strong>in</strong>g the exist<strong>in</strong>gcomponents, or by add<strong>in</strong>g new ones oromitt<strong>in</strong>g some of the exist<strong>in</strong>g ones. Synthesis isthe name of the process of comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, or recomb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g,components <strong>in</strong>to a whole.The process of mentally analys<strong>in</strong>g and synthesis<strong>in</strong>gcan used as an exercise or game, and it can
