The delta is a natural stopoverfor migratory birds, but the most characteristicbird is the common pelican, the featured star ofthis bird-watchers’ paradise.175It may be that before anything this miraculoustriangle of land and water was conceived as anamazing metropolis for winged creatures. Sufficeto say that the five routes of migratory birdsfrom Europe, Asia and Africa all pass throughthe Danube Delta where suddenly there is anextraordinary image of paradise. Out of 315 species,more than half nest here many of them arerarities and under protection. Water liliesare also considered monuments of nature andare the uncontested stars of the plant world.Last, but not least, more than 90 species of fishlive at the mouth of the Danube. Worth mentioningamong the special species of fish are the sturgeons– the beluga, the Acipenser guldens taedicolchicus, the Acipenser stellatus stellatus – allcaviar suppliers which migrate from Black Sea tothe Danube to lay their roe.
