Na svoji potiskozi Avstrijo Donava ne teče zmeraj južno odtako imenovanega Češkega masiva, včasih tečetudi skozi njega ter odnaša majhne delce.Največji se imenuje »Dunkelsteinerwald« in jeodgovoren za obstoj doline Wachau.Veliko je značilnosti, zaradi katerih je ta krajinaedinstvena: številne ljubke vasice in mestavzdolž reke, velika raznovrstnost in majhenvzorec naravnih in kulturnih krajinskihelementov ter značilne kamnite terase, nakaterih raste svetovno znano vino.Dolina Wachau je kot krajina leta 1994 prejelaevropsko naravovarstveno diplomo SvetaEvrope in bila leta 2000 uvrščena na UNESCOVseznam svetovnih kulturnih dediščin.Arbeitskreis Wachau je združenje, ki združuje 13občin doline Wachau ter številne drugepomembne ustanove. Njegova glavna naloga jeprizadevati si za ohranitev in razvoj te zeloposebne regije. Arbeitskreis Wachau zatousklajuje regionalno politiko doline. Da bidosegel svoje cilje, se Arbeitskreis Wachauposlužuje številnih evropskih in nacionalnih virovsredstev, kot sta LEADER+ in LIFE Nature.ABSTRACTThe Wachau valleyThe Wachau valley is a 36 km long part of theDanube valley in Austria, starting at Melk andEmmersdorf in the west and ending at Krems-Stein and Mautern in the east. On its waythrough Austria, the Danube not always runssouth of the so-called Bohemian Mass butsometimes runs through it, cutting off smallpieces. The largest one is called »Dunkelsteinerwald«and is responsible for the existenceof the Wachau valley.There are a lot of features that makes this landscapeunique: the numerous lovely villages andcities along the river, the large variety and smallscalepattern of natural and cultural landscapeelements, and the typical dry stone terraces, onwhich the world famous wine is grown.The Wachau valley has, as a landscape, beenawarded with the European Diploma of ProtectedAreas of the Council of Europe in 1994and has become part of UNESCO’s World HeritageList in 2000.Arbeitskreis Wachau is an association whichgathers the 13 communities of the Wachau valleyas well as a number of other important institutions.Its main task is to work for the preservationand development of this very special region.Arbeitskreis Wachau therefore coordinates theregional politics of the valley. In order to achieveits goals Arbeitskreis Wachau makes use of anumber of European and national fundings,such as LEADER+ and LIFE Nature.
