New Year, New LeadershipCary H. Mielke, M.D., has been appointed as theInterim Chief of Staff at <strong>Shrine</strong>rs Hospitals for Children— Twin Cities. He joined the Twin Cities team in 2004 asAssistant Chief of Staff after completing his orthopaedicsurgery residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and afellowship in pediatricorthopaedic surgery at<strong>Shrine</strong>rs Hospitals forChildren — Salt LakeCity and the University ofUtah.Dr. Mielke initially planned to become a spine surgeonuntil he realized how passionate he was about treatingpediatric deformities. Over time, Dr. Mielke’s area ofgreatest expertise is in the management of patients withcerebral palsy and other neuromuscular conditions. Hegets a great deal of satisfaction in seeing a patient’s walkingimprove after multiple, simultaneous lower extremityprocedures. He also enjoys performing both foot and hipdysplasia surgery.A note from Dr. Guidera: It’s hard to realize that todayis my last official day at SHC-TC. I have certainly enjoyedour time together and appreciate how much each of youdo for our patients and hospital. This is a wonderful andcaring team; keep up the good work and team effort! It’sthe people who make the difference and I believe we haveone of the greatest care teams available. I have been proudto work with you and now, in my new position, I willcontinue to watch over our hospital. I will continue toassist with physician recruitment, the permanent Chief ofStaff selection, a few clinics and surgeries and outreachclinics. I ask each of you to continue to work together anddo whatever you can to increase patient volume; it’s up toeveryone to address this issue.I believe I leave the hospital in better shape than in2004, and most of that is due to your efforts. Pledge recited, invocation given by Chaplin GeorgeCarlson.n Introduction of Past Potentates:PP Fay Hassie, PP Peter Ekholm, PP Richard Thompson, PPJohn Perkins, PP Jim Berg, PP Roger Robinson, PP JerryPlachecki, PP Rahn Lund, PP Mike Awada.n Hospital Report PP Dick Thompson reported that Dr.Guidera will be moving to Tampa, FL. The Hospital Board hasinterviewed two current <strong>Shrine</strong>rs Hospital physicians, one fromToronto and one from Lexington. They are currently in theirresidencies at those <strong>Shrine</strong>rs Hospitals.There are now 8 accredited physicians from the Mayo HospitalSystem on staff at <strong>Shrine</strong>rs Hospital for Children – Twin Cities.This is a great addition for our Hospital.Dr. Ludke and Dr. Crandle are expanding their time at theHospital to help fill the vacancycreated by Dr. Guidera’s departure.As always, we still need morepatients at our Hospital. PP Dickexplained that there is no longer anapplication at the Hospital. Parentscan call directly to the Hospital andmake an appointment. There is nopaperwork necessary prior tomaking an appointment at theHospital. We will continue to track<strong>Shrine</strong>rs who are sponsoringchildren for admission to ourHospital.Dr. Guidera called PotentateFrank Spevak and asked him toPP Jim Berg with Davidextend his thank you to all theTabor, C&U PresidentNobles at <strong>Osman</strong> for their supportduring his 10 years at <strong>Shrine</strong>rs Hospital for Children – Twin Cities.n Circus Report: Roger Berge and John DavenportJohn stated that the Circus Office has created a special circuspostercommemorating our90th <strong>Osman</strong> <strong>Shrine</strong>Circus Anniversary.<strong>Osman</strong> <strong>Shrine</strong> Circusis the longestcontinuously running<strong>Shrine</strong> Circus in theUS.
