Pote’s NotesWe sure are lucky to be ShrinersFirst, I want to express my heartfeltthank you for electing me as yourPotentate for 2013. This is not aresponsibility I take lightly. I will workevery day to keep Osman as one of thebest Shrine Temples in all of ShrinersInternational.I’ll be honest with you and let youknow I am a little afraid about how I willdo. But I think a little fear is good. I hopeit keeps me on my toes. I’ve got some bigshoes to fill, with FrankSpeavak becoming thenewest member of the PastPotentate’s Club. Osman hasreally benefitted from hisleadership and I know noone has benefitted morethan me. If I had a nickelevery time I would ask him“Hey Frank! Now what do Ineed to do?” I’d have a lot ofnickels. I’m glad he and Joanhave become such goodfriends with Terrie and me.I’m sure I will still be saying,“Hey Frank, now what?”The theme for 2013 isWe sure are lucky to beShriners. I really mean that. Whenever Igo out to an event that is non-Shrine ornon-Masonic related, all I think about ishow much more fun we have at ourevents. I always tell the uninformed thatnobody has more fun than Shriners. Terrieand I have planned and are still planningwhat we hope will be funevents. That leads up to my nextitem. This year I am going tomake every effort to helpOsman improve in gettingmembers — not only getting newmembers but retaining current members.Recently Mike Nehm and I attended themembership seminar in Tampa. It was mysecond time and Mike’s first. After theWe won’t soon forget the incredible Dancing Divan, whoentertained at the Rochester Christmas Party, and can be seen athttp://www.jibjab.com/view/jVH_0XfPSVGuOUMZ8OXYCg?utm_campaign=URL+Copy&utm_medium=Share&utm_source=JibJab&cmpid=jj_urlseminar Mike and I came home and wewere all excited and we feel like we got alot of great information and could hardlywait to get going. We are going to startputting together agreat membershipteam. Currently themembership team is theappointed Divan with the 1stCeremonial Master as theChairman. While this hasworked in the past, a point thatwas made in Tampa is that themembership chair should not be amember of the Divan.I hope you all saw my “want ad” in thelast Osman paper. I know it sounded alittle like a joke but I can assure you thatmembership is no joking matter. While in Tampa, we learned thatfor the first time since the early1900s Shriners International willdrop below 300,000 members. That is unacceptable. The boardof directors informed us that ifwe want to keep this greatorganization and our wonderfulphilanthropy alive it will be up tous. So I will continue to put thewant ad in our newsletter until Iget someone to take membershipand really give it their all. As thead stated, no experience needed. We will do everything possible tomake the job and the chairman asuccess. As I said earlier, failure isnot an option.Again thank you for your support andjust remember, we sure are lucky to beShriners.Es Selamu AleikumDon Harmsen, Potentate 2013In This Issue . . .Oh, Those Christmas Ties! - 2New Outer Guard- 4Potentate’s Reception - 4C&U Seminar - 5Winter Carnival Parade - 5Big Tent Event pics - 6 & 32From the Ticket Booth - 7Hospital Report - 8Stated Meeting Minutes - 8Parade to Glory - 10Club & Unit Reports - 12Me Pitcher Taker - 25January Birthdays - 25Osman Womens Auxiliary - 26Patient Referral Process - 27Daughters of the Nile - 28Paper Supporters -29Calendar -30Kids Christmas Party pics - 31Official Monthly Publication of Osman A.A.O.N.M.S.2750 Sibley Memorial Highway, St. Paul, MN 55121(651) 452-5660 • Fax (651) 683-0231osmanshrine.org• E-mail: doreen@OsmanShrine.orgAll communications regarding editorial content or advertisingshould be addressed to the Editor at the address above.Published in the interest of Osman Shrine.Osman Shrine Office StaffDoreen LynchOffice ManagerEllen MaineAssistant Office ManagerDoreen@OsmanShrine.org Ellen@OsmanShrine.orgJ a n u a r y 2 0 1 3 P a g e 3

Welcome Outer GuardMy Grandfather was a member of St.Paul, Montgomery Lodge #258, I canremember him talking about the Mason’sorganization in 1972. I was too young to bea member, but the seed was planted. After Icompleted my tour of seven years with theUnited States Air Force, Air NationalGuard, and completing my college degree,it was time to settle down. Now my planwas to start a family before I was too old. Inthe mid to late 90’s I revisited the invitationto become a Mason and took my degreesfrom Hazel Park Lodge # 312.Unfortunately my grandfather was not aliveto see me take my degrees. To gain more light in masonry, I becamea member of the Saint Paul Scottish Riteand participated in the Rose Croix. Thetwo people who were my mentors andhelped me learn the craft were RussellMeister and George Carlson. My ambitionSunday,January 131 – 3 pmat the Osman Event Center.was now to become a member of OsmanShrine Temple. When I joined the Shrine, Ihad to go through the ceremonial the oldway. I was picked as a primary person forthe hot sands, thanks to my sponsor TedVeilleux. Because of the brain damagecaused by the hot sands, I decided tobecome a member of the Osman ShrineClowns and quickly learned how to make afool of myself without anyone knowingwho I am.I became the Treasurer of the board oftrustees for Hazel Park Lodge # 312 andthen became the Master of the lodge in2000. The year after I was Master of HazelPark Lodge # 312, I was elected to be thePresident of the Osman Shrine Clowns. Iparticipated in both the Blue Lodge and theShrine when I had some spare time.As a clown, I participated in more than100 parades. I participated in the OsmanYou and your Lady are invited to join Donald Harmsen and his ladyTerrie, as he celebrates the beginning of his year as Potentate ofOsman Shrine.Nobles wear your Fez. Club or Unit uniform or suit & tie is theappropriate attire.Shrine Circus,Alexandria ShrineCircus, and themonthly ShrineHospital parties asa clown. AfterGeorge Dixonmoved to Arizona Mark GallowayI organized someof the shrine clown hospital parties. Myclowning activities also expanded to severallocal communities; by teaching clowning atthe National Girl Scout jamborees, at localclown alleys, clowning at communityfestivals, county fairs, and church rally days.I participated in the mid-west conventionsand won a few clown competitions. The Shrine hospital is very important tome. I promoted the Shrine Hospital at theChisago County Fair and organized ahospital screening clinic in Rush City. Theclinic had 2 children apply for services andboth were accepted to the Shrine Hospital.Due to Brian Beerman‘s commitment tomove up in the Grand Lodge line to be theGrand Master of Minnesota, he could notcontinue to be the Osman Shrine Circusnovelty chairman anymore. John Davenportasked me if I would be interestedin taking that position for thecircus. I accepted the invitationto be the novelty chairman and all ofthe challenges that it brought. Runningthe novelties was not an easy task at first, but with a lot of work, it became lessstressful and simpler to run.I was asked by Don Harmsen to take theposition of President of the Clubs & Unitsand accepted the challenge. With the helpof Marvin Felderman Jr. and Jim Gratias,we were successful in updating the clubsand units by-laws.I am presently working for the City ofSaint Paul – Finance & Management / RealEstate and have worked there for the past25 years as a certified facility manager. Ispend most of my time at homemaintaining a hobby farm in Rush City.I was honored to be asked by DonHarmsen to be member of the Divan. Bothmy lovely Lady Lori and I will work hardand do the best we can to make the OsmanShrine Temple strong and successful foryears to come.P a g e 4 J a n u a r y 2 0 1 3

New Year, New LeadershipCary H. Mielke, M.D., has been appointed as theInterim Chief of Staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children— Twin Cities. Over time, Dr. Mielke’s area ofgreatest expertise is in the management of patients withcerebral palsy and other neuromuscular conditions. He also enjoys performing both foot and hipdysplasia surgery.A note from Dr. Guidera: It’s hard to realize that todayis my last official day at SHC-TC. I have certainly enjoyedour time together and appreciate how much each of youdo for our patients and hospital. This is a wonderful andcaring team; keep up the good work and team effort! We had aRique Beslin great turnout, and eventhough the room was abit on the snug side for all of us, we all hada great time. We learned that Frank wasnot counting down the remaining meetingshe needed to attend, but rather wascounting down the number of dinners heand his lady Joan had left to attend thisyear! We also had a fantastic time at theChildren's Christmas time, even with thefoot of fresh new snow!We added 3 new members to theLegion of Honor in 2012. We'd love todouble that number in 2013! So if you donot yet have a unit or just want to knowmore, please contact me for moreinformation. Many of us will start off 2013 with ourfellow Osman Shriners at the annual NewYear's Day brunch at the Spur. Me pitcher takerClowns pay their respect. Visitors to thewake and funeral of Hudson resident RobertAhrens (March 17, 2003) may have beensurprised when they stopped to pay their respectsat the side of his open casket. At his request, hewas buried wearing his clown costume andmakeup. His character, Kurlie the Clown, was apart of his life for 40 years. As co-founder of theShriners Clown Club, he was honored by fellowpast presidents who served as casketbearers at theservice. In the front row, from left, are AlFellerman “Alzie,” Dave Williams “Pinkie,” BobHoffman “Woodie,” John Zima “Huggie’ and,not visible, Ron Harmon “Harmonie”; back,Dick Ruckmar “Ruckie; Don Danielson“Wallie,” Bob Boesen “Bozie” and Chuck Strain“Chuckie.” Ahrens had in the past served as aclown casketbearer for another club member, AJAnderson. A photo from that funeral ended upon the front page of the Pioneer Press and laterin the movie “Larger than Life” starring BillMurray. The photo in last month’s Osman of the old fez with “Me pitchure taker” on itstirred up some more memories.
