BOSTON “CORNER KICKS” ... 2010 WPSL Coach Of The Year Mike Kersker stepped down in the off-season & hired
Ebbie Kodiat as his replacement. In 2009 & 2010, Kodiat served as assistant for the Boston Aztec NPSL team & WPSL
CHICAGO “CORNER KICKS” ... after two years competing in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS), the Red Stars
announced last December they suspended operations. They quickly chose the WPSL as a viable option to maintain their
brand and are looking to re-join WPS in 2012 ... for their first WPSL season, the Red Stars hired Eclipse Select S.C.’s
Director of Coaching & Player Development Rory Dames. A Chicago native & former standout at St. Viator H.S., Dames
joined Eclipse in 1996 and took the club to national prominence. Soccer America named Eclipse the top girls soccer club in
the U.S. twice (2007-08) ... most think Chicago is a “pro” team this season but not so: they are equipped with top national
collegiate talent like Illinois’ Big 10 Freshman Of The Year Vanessa DiBernardo & 2010 NCAA College Cup winner with
Notre Dame, Kecia Morway ... former WPS Chicago All-Star Brittany Klein - who started 20 games in the 2009 Red Stars
season - returns this weekend with the Orange County Waves.

WPSL HISTORY & INFORMATION
ABOUT OUR LEAGUE
The Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) is a 60-plus team national
semi-pro league and was formed in 1998. It is sanctioned by the
United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) as an affi liate of the
U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF), the ruling body of soccer in the United
States & FIFA, the world’s ruling body for soccer.
The WPSL makes
every effort to bring
quality soccer to the
community and to
promote the stature
of female athletes as
role models for our
youth. The WPSL is unique in that it is an open league that is run by the
teams. Each team gets one vote and decides all issues for the entire
league.
Anyone can access information about our league such as: current teams,
rosters, statistics, schedules, results, constitution and by-laws, forms,
meeting minutes and the latest league news at our offi cial website:
http://www.wpsl.info
Our league is fl exible with new teams in respect to minimum standards,
but we expect that every team aspire to achieve all WPSL standards.
Standards that we stress include: a quality playing surface, water for
players provided by the home team, ice and a trainer at all games, professional
conduct and adherence to the league constitution & by-laws.
The WPSL has a solid working relationship with Women’s Professional
Soccer (WPS) as the Boston Aztec Breakers Reserves are the semi-pro
affi liate of the Boston Breakers, while the New York Fury served in the
same capacity for the Philadelphia Independence and Sky Blue F.C. of
WPS in 2011.
BRANDI CHASTAIN
Brandi Chastain played for the F.C. Gold Pride of WPS and San Jose of
the now-defunct WUSA, and now continues her playing career with the
California Storm of the WPSL. Chastain is the fi rst-ever player named to
the WPSL Hall Of Fame and has starred for the Storm at various times
of her prestigious career. While her versatility & adaptability kept her at
the highest levels of soccer for two decades, Brandi is best known for
her game-winning penalty shootout kick against China in the 1999 FIFA
Women’s World Cup Final and her bra-baring celebration afterwards.
Chastain fi rst represented her country in June 1988 against Japan and
scored her fi rst (through fi fth) international goals on April, 18 1991 when
she came off the bench to score fi ve consecutive goals in a 12-0 United
- which the USWNT won. Brandi then made the change from attack to defense
while playing with the Storm and as a defender, made the USWNT
roster again in 1996. Chastain participated in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic
Games, helping the Americans win the gold medal by playing every
minute, despite a serious knee injury suffered in the semifi nal against
Norway. Of her 192 USWNT caps, she played 89 of them primarily as
a defender. Brandi now lives in San Jose, CA with her husband Jerry
JERRY ZANELLI
Jerry Zanelli got involved in soccer when he began coaching his children
at a very young age and hasn’t been able to stop since that time. He
moved to Sacramento, California in 1980 and made the decision to get
out of coaching until he went to the high school down the street to watch
a game. During a conversation he was told there weren’t any girls born
in 1971 that were good enough to play soccer... the challenge was on.
From there Zanelli started coaching the River City Rowdies, who went on
to win the California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) U-19 Championship.
Currently, Jerry is the owner and operator of the California Storm,
a women’s soccer team he began over 20 years ago. He is the Founder
of the WPSL, which started as a California-based league then grew to
become a premier National League with over 60 teams; as well as being
Founder of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) - a pro-am
national men’s league. Teams coached by Zanelli won the 1993 and
1994 U.S. Open Cup and were runners-up in the United States Amateur
Soccer Association (USASA) Men’s Open Cup competition in 1995 &
1986. His California Storm has been one of the cornerstone franchises in
the WPSL, winning three National Championships (1999, 2002 & 2004)
while being a National Finalist on three occasions (2000, 2003, 2005).
Hall of Fame inductions are nothing new as in 2010, Jerry was named to
the USASA Hall of Fame alongside Eric Beck, Frank Giancroce, James
D. Hamilton, Patrick Healy (posthumous), Brooks McCormick and Abner
Rogers.
2010 WPSL CHAMPIONSHIP
BOSTON AZTEC BREAKERS RESERVES 2, AJAX AMERICA 1
RICHARDSON, TX (08/01/10) - The 2010 Women’s Premier Soccer
League (WPSL) National Final would pit two of the more experienced
sides against one another - Pacifi c Conference champion Ajax America
(9-4-1) & East Conference champion Boston Aztec Breakers Reserves
(12-1-1). Both survived scares from two young & dynamic sides in Oklahoma
Alliance F.C. & F.C. Milwaukee in the Semifi nals, respectively, and
once again, had to also brave the unrelenting Texas heat.
The Breakers Reserves put the heat on Ajax in the fi rst half and the
teams switched roles in the second, but in the 83rd minute, it only took
one bounce of the ball to decide the 2010 WPSL National Champion.
Boston’s Mandi Back put a shot on goal that Ajax goalkeeper Anna Picarelli
touched to the crossbar. It would caroom right to Becca Mays, who
fi nished cooly to cement the 2-1 victory.
For the weekend, there was a full share of dynamic soccer on display
despite the sun & heat but in the end, Boston were the most consistent
out of the four teams. 2010 East Player Of The Year Leah Blayney ran
the show over the two matches and for her efforts, was named the 2010
WPSL Final Four MVP.
It was a true team effort from all involved with the Aztec team as they
weathered storms from their opponents, made adjustments and found a
way to persevere.
“I think it was good for us to see Ajax play yesterday [in their Semifi nal vs.
Oklahoma],” said Head Coach Mike Kersker. “It gave us an opportunity to
make a couple tactical adjustments. We did that and it really made a big
difference for us. Again, its the resiliency of this team... every player on
the fi eld was phenomenal.”
Boston came out of the gates as the stronger side and were attacking
from all angles. In the 10th minute, Taleen Dimirdjian’s hustle proved
benefi cial as she chased down a ball at the top of the penalty area and
got in a scramble with Ajax keeper Yiana Dimmitt.
The ball squirted loose and Becky Ryan drove the ball into the empty net
for the 1-0 lead. Blayney & Ryan would combine together seven minutes
later, but the shot from the Final Four MVP would go just wide.
Ajax picked up their play at the end of the fi rst half, and would continue
that surge into the second half. In the 49th minute, the combination of an
acrobatic end-line run from Leah Gallegos and the Boston defense falling
back off her gave the former USC star a shot on goal, which she sent
inside the far post for the 1-1 game.
“We’ve been in that position a couple of times this season,” said Breakers
Reserves captain Rebekah Splaine. “We know how to come back
from a tied game or a defi cit. One thing I know about our team, we never
throw in the towel.”
From there, the pace of the match picked up. Boston’s Chioma Igwe fi red
just wide of the far post in the 54th minute, while Ajax’ Shannon Cross
forced Reserves keeper Rebecca Ritchie into a double-save in the 58th
minute.
Play would tighten up as the half wore on. A hard but clean slide tackle
from Blayney would win the ball for her team in the Ajax half of the fi eld,
The 2010 WPSL National Champion Boston Aztec
Breakers reserves
and from there, Back’s shot and Mays’ fi nish would give Boston their fi rstever
WPSL National Championship title.
For Splaine, it was a very appropriate end to a playing career for the collegiate
All-American. two-time W-League champion, WUSA veteran and
now - a WPSL Championship winner.
“I got a little teary-eyed after the game,” said Splaine. “This is my last year
playing, so... a National Championship to end my career is fantastic.”
