<strong>The</strong> <strong>Long</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Storied</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jose</strong> <strong>Montoya</strong> 109church her first week, observing every bob <strong>and</strong> quiver <strong>of</strong> the back <strong>of</strong> her head, catching his breathevery time the congregation rose <strong>and</strong> then sat as her backside gracefully thrust <strong>and</strong> arced in front <strong>of</strong>him.<strong>The</strong> following Sunday he watched <strong>and</strong> waited, <strong>and</strong> by a carefully timed greeting <strong>and</strong>introduction he contrived a seat next to her in the pew as the congregation began the service with anenthusiastic “Battle Hymn <strong>of</strong> the Republic,” verses one <strong>and</strong> two.
