We will have variousspeakers from different aspects of the veterinary and animal world visitingevery Tuesday throughout the semester to educate and encourage theclub members (and visitors) in caring for animals and what it takes to beaccepted into veterinary colleges. The meeting will be starting 30minutes early at 5:00 pm, in order to accommodate the schedule of Dr. Jean-Pierre Scheerlinck, theAssociate Dean of International Students from the University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia!This is the first time Melbourne University has everPLEASE NOTE: Our October 8 thmeeting will start at 5:00pm, 30minutes earlier than regularmeetings.presented to the club, and Dr. Scheerlinck went through alot of rescheduling in order to give us a presentation. Itwill be an informative meeting about the University, soplease come prepared with questions as well! We ask thatevery club member who can possibly attend to pleasecome to this meeting. <strong>Pierce</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Pre</strong>-Veterinary Club NewsletterSeptember 15, 2013Highlighted Trip: Have Trunk, Will TravelThis past summer, the <strong>Pre</strong>-Vet Club was invited on a tour of Have Trunk Will Travel, a privately-fundedelephant conservation program that provides the public with safe, educational and recreational accessto earth’s most wonderful mammal, the elephant. We had a wonderful opportunity getting to meetthese beautiful creatures face-to-face and learning about what it takes to care for them and train them,and we were even given the opportunity to experience an elephant ride! For more information on Have Trunk Will Travel, please visit their Facebook page athttps://www.facebook.com/HaveTrunkWillTravel and their website athttp://www.havetrunkwilltravel.com/.This trip is offered in the Spring semester only, we will keep you updated on it nextsemester!Donations UpdateWe are currently taking donations at our monthly meetings in support of the <strong>Pierce</strong> <strong>College</strong> Farm and ofMarley’s Mutts Dog Rescue.The <strong>Pierce</strong> <strong>College</strong> Farm is our on-campus teaching farm. Students in the agricultural programs of studyat <strong>Pierce</strong> <strong>College</strong> are given the opportunity to learn real-life applicationsof what they learn in the classroom. The <strong>Pre</strong>-Vet Club helps support thefarm through donations and volunteer opportunities.Throughout the semester, the <strong>Pre</strong>-Vet Club also makes donations tovarious charities and non-profit organizations. The non-profitorganization we are currently supporting is Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue,located in Tehachapi, CA. Marley’s Mutts is a large breed dog rescuespecializing in pulling from high kill shelters in the Kern County California area. They save at-risk dogsand rehabilitate them from both behavioral and physical problems that may prevent them from beingadoptable, and teach the community to spread awareness that big dogs are not mean dogs. Whatmakes them unique is that they pull from the county's outlying areas that usually get no foot traffic and

Currently, theiradoption success rate is 99% for all dogsthat they take in. You can alsosign up for their newsletter athttp://marleysmutts.com/index.php/newsletter/ .Walking Shield Backpack DriveThe Walking Shield Backpack Drive is a gift and incentive for children to stay in school that live on IndianReservations in states like Montana, North and South Carolina, etc. Many of these children are either homeless orlive in small, poorly built houses that do not provide much protection from the cold elements during the winterseason. The backpack is put together by a student (you), which will include basic school supplies, activities/toys,hygiene items, clothing, and shoes. These backpacks will be distributed to boys and girls raging from ages 5-17years old. The backpacks will be due to turn in to the <strong>Pre</strong>-Vet Club on November 5 th at the weekly meeting. We willhave a presentation by Lidia on Walking Shield on September 24 th during our <strong>Pre</strong> Vet Club Meeting.
