Triton Coaching StaffDenny MyersHead CoachIn his first season with the Tritons Coach Myers brought his winning ways to <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> with an Indoor NationalChampionship in Women’s Indoor Track along with a second Place finish for the Men’s team. To go along withthis was the highest finish by both the Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track Teams at the Outdoor National Meet3rd and 4th.Myers’ coaching experience dates back to 1979 as he was a coach at Lansing Community College from 1979-2000.After a successful tenure at Lansing that saw him win 10 total NJCAA Cross Country National Titles, six in men’sfour in women’s, along with 22 region coach <strong>of</strong> the year and 11 National Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year awards. He movedon to State University <strong>of</strong> New York Plattsburgh from 2000-2001. From there he moved to Vincennes Universitywhere he served as the Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach in addition to the Athletic Director from2001-2005. His next move was to Rend Lake College where he spent three seasons, 2006-2009. Myers started thefirst women’s track & field and cross country program for the college. It didn’t take long for him to taste success ashe won the NJCAA Women’s Indoor Track and Field National Championship in his second season and was againnamed the National Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year.His main area <strong>of</strong> focus will be with the middle distance runners where he has coached many All-Americans, as well as vertical jumps, having coachedseven <strong>of</strong> the last NJCAA high jump champions. Myers is a graduate <strong>of</strong> Sienna Heights University (MI) and is USATF Level II certified in Jumps andLevel III certified in Sport Psychology.In addition to his duties as coach Myers is also part <strong>of</strong> the academic advising staff and teaches Tech Math. Coach Myers also serves as president <strong>of</strong> theNJCAA Cross Country Coaches Association.Dee BrownAssistant CoachAfter spending his first five seasons as the Head Track and Field Coach at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong>, he starts his seventh seasonas the assistant track and field coach. In a move to help the Tritons position themselves as national contenders Brownwill now be in charge <strong>of</strong> all recruiting for both the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programsas well as overseeing the training for the distance runners.Brown is in his seventh season as the Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach. His women’s team wascrowned National Champions in both 2007 and 2008; and runners-up in 2009. His men’s team finished as runners-uptwice (2005, 2007) in their seven year existence. Brown has been named the National Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year three times,first in 2005 for his men’s team and again in 2007 and 2008 for his women’s team. In 2010, Brown was named theNJCAA Men’s Indoor Track and Field Assistant Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year.Brown has been named the Region XI Men’s Cross Country Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year five times (2005, 07, 08, 09, 10) andthe Region XI Women’s Cross Country Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year five times (2006, 07, 08, 09, 10). He is currently servinghis second term as the secretary for the NJCAA Track and Field Coaches Association. Over the past seven years,thirteen men and ten women have earned NJCAA All-America status in cross country or the half marathon. In 2007, Stephen Dak was the NationalChampion in the Half-Marathon Classic and in 2008 Joshua Sawe repeated the task. In 2006, the women’s cross country team finished with the highestGPA in the Nation and were named an NJCAA Academic Team <strong>of</strong> the Year.Prior to coaching at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong>, Brown was an Instructor <strong>of</strong> Management Information Systems (MIS) at Luther College and an assistant Cross Countryand Track and Field coach for two years. Brown had worked as an assistant coach at the collegiate level for five years working primarily with distancerunners and as a high school head coach for two years working with sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws.In addition to his coaching duties, Brown teaches Introduction to Computers. Brown competed in Cross Country and Track and Field while at LutherCollege in Decorah, IA. His primary events were the steeplechase, 5 kilometers and 10 kilometers. He has also completed three marathons.Brown earned a BA degree in Computer Science and Business Administration with a minor in Mathematics from Luther College and a Masters <strong>of</strong>Science degree in Physical Education from Springfield College in Springfield, MA. Brown is USATF Level II certified in Endurance events. He is alsoon the staff <strong>of</strong> the Luther College Distance Running Camp held in Decorah, IA each summer.<strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Track and Field Page 1


Anthony AcklinAssistant CoachCoach Acklin is in his second year at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> and if year two is as successful. <strong>The</strong>n the tritons have much tolook forward to. Coach Acklin was voted National Assistant coach <strong>of</strong> the year in his inaugural year. He coachedthree national champions and six all-Americans. He helped AG Bradford to a spot on the USA World cup heptathlonteam that won this year’s event in Marburg, Germany.Acklin spent three seasons, from 2006-2009 at Rend Lake. He had a nice career there as he helped to develop eightNJCAA National Champions and 42 NJCAA All-Americans en route to National Championships in both Men’s andWomen’s track and field in addition to coaching three world junior team members. In 2009, Acklin was recognizedas the NJCAA Indoor Assistant Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year.Acklin graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale where he was a two-time Missouri Valley ConferenceChampion in the 110-meter high hurdles with a personal best <strong>of</strong> 13.68. Before SIUC he was a two-timeNJCAA All-American at Wallace State.Coach Acklin will be in charge <strong>of</strong> the horizontal jumps, hurdles and multi-events this season. He is USATF LevelII certified in sprints and hurdles. He is also the Strength coach for the track team.In addition to his coaching duties at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Coach Acklin is also the campus activities director, and teaches in the education department.Brooke FergusonAssistant CoachCoach Ferguson begins her third season with the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Tritons as an assistant for both the Track and Field andCross Country Teams. Ferguson will work with both the men’s and women’s distance, and steeplechase athletes.Ferguson is a 2005 graduate <strong>of</strong> Wartburg College in Waverly, IA where she received her BA degree in PhysicalEducation. After graduating, she spent a year at Wartburg as an assistant to the men’s and women’s cross countryand track and field teams. Ferguson recently completed her master’s degree in Human Performance – Applied SportScience at the University <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin – La Crosse. While at UW-La Crosse she spent two years as a volunteerassistant for the women’s cross country and women’s track and field programs. Her primary duties were coachingthe 1500m, steeplechase and 10k athletes. Ferguson is USATF Level I certified.Ferguson also serves as a resident assistant and adjunct instructor at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong>.Steve JacksonAssistant CoachCoach Jackson enters his fourth season as the throwing coach for the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Track and Field team. In 2008Jackson coached Sam Lambert to a runner-up finish in the Weight Throw with a toss <strong>of</strong> 60’ 2” at the Indoor NationalChampionships. At the Outdoor National Championships, Lambert finished third in the Hammer Throw and seventhin the Shot Put. He earned a full-ride scholarship to the University <strong>of</strong> Wyoming.Prior to coaching at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong>, Jackson spent four years as the Head Coach for the Allen County CommunityCollege Track and Cross Country teams in Iola, KS. Jackson served as an assistant coach for the men’s track andfield program at Oklahoma State University two years prior to that.In addition to his coaching duties, Jackson is employed at the Fort Dodge REC in Fort Dodge. He earned hisB.A. degree in General Studies from Emporia State University. Jackson is also a USATF Level II certified coachin Throws.Ryan SandersAssistant CoachRyan Sanders begins her first season at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong>. She will be working with the short sprinters and relays. Shecomes from a Jr. College back ground having competed at Rend Lake College where she was coached by CoachesMyers and Acklin. She was an All- American in the Pentathlon and Heptathlon as well as the long jump.Coach Sanders then went on to compete for Bethune- Cookman University where she graduated with her degree inSociology. Triton Men are National Runners-Up!CHARLESTON, IL – Going down to the wire, the outcome <strong>of</strong> the Men’s and Women’s NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships was not decideduntil the last event was completed. <strong>The</strong> top teams in the men’s meet, <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong>, Rend Lake and Barton County; as well as the top teams in thewomen’s meet, <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong>, Barton County and New Mexico all fielded teams in the fastest heat <strong>of</strong> their respective 4 x 400 meter relay events. In thewomen’s relay, Barton finished first, followedby New Mexico, then <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong>. Due toNew Mexico edging the Tritons in the relay, itpropelled them into a first place tie for the teamtitle. <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> and New Mexico JuniorCollege finished as Co-National Championswith 115 team points, followed by CowleyCounty in third with 62 points and BartonCounty in fourth with 54 points. Fellow RegionXI opponents <strong>Iowa</strong> Western and North <strong>Iowa</strong>Area finished in 22nd and 27th places out <strong>of</strong> 30scoring teams. <strong>The</strong> men’s 4 x 400 meter relaysaw Barton and Rend Lake separated by only.14 seconds for first and second, followed by<strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> in third. Chris Watts (Maywood,IL), Tony Knight (Aurora, IL), Willard Lewis(Chicago, IL), and Nathan Arnett (Nassau,Bahamas) teamed up to run 3:17.81.Barton’s victory in the relay gave them justenough team points to edge the Tritons by only 1.5 points for the team title. Barton was first in the standings with 114.5, <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> second with 113followed by Rend Lake with 110. <strong>Iowa</strong> Western finished in 10th <strong>of</strong> 31 scoring teams.<strong>The</strong> NJCAA awards All-America honors to the top two individuals in each event, while the Track and Field Coaches Association awards All-Americahonors to the top six U.S. citizens in each event and top three all U.S. relays. <strong>The</strong> Tritons were crowned National Champions and All-American in threeindividual events and two relays over the weekend.Friday began with a bang when Anthony Lieghio (Dublin, Ireland), Knight, Terence Lee(Philadelphia, PA), and Tomas Cotter (Dundalk, Ireland) brought the baton home in the distance medley relay in 10:05.12, thirteen seconds ahead <strong>of</strong>the second place team. Cotter ran a 4:15 mile to bring the team from second to first. Saturday started in the same fashion as well when the quartet <strong>of</strong>Lewis, Josh Fick (Muscatine), Matt Juhl (Estherville), and Lee saw gold in the 4 x 800 meter relay. <strong>The</strong>y finished in a school record time <strong>of</strong> 7:49.16,due in part to Lee’s anchor leg <strong>of</strong> 1:53.9.James Libe (Washington) and Nick Grosso (Cottage Grove, WI) represented in the throwing events. Grosso finished eighth in the shot put with a throw<strong>of</strong> 48’ 8” while Libe finished 13th with a mark <strong>of</strong> 45’ 11.75”. Grosso also finished 11th in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss <strong>of</strong> 50’ 10.75”. In thehigh jump, freshmen Marquis Mack (Sarasota, FL) and Troy Walls (Normal, IL) made an impression. Mack was crowned national champion in his firstcollegiate national meet with a mark <strong>of</strong> 6’ 11.75”. Walls finished 11th in the competition with a jump <strong>of</strong> 6’ 6”.Walls and Ethan Wilkins (Memphis, TN) also participated in the two-day heptathlon competition. <strong>The</strong> first day consisted <strong>of</strong> the 60 meter dash, longjump, shot put and high jump. During the second day they participated in the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000 meter run. Over the course <strong>of</strong> theseven events Wilkins set personal bests in the 60 meter dash and 60 meter hurdles; Walls set personal best marks in the 60 meter dash, pole vault, longjump and shot put. Walls won the high jump portion <strong>of</strong> the heptathlon with a leap <strong>of</strong> 6’ 9.5”. Walls finished third overall with a new school record mark<strong>of</strong> 4,700 points, Wilkins finished 11th with 4,343 points.In the sprints, Wilmot Wellington (Fairfield) finished 22nd in the 60 meter dash with a personal best time <strong>of</strong> 6.96 seconds. He finished 16th in the 200meter dash with a time <strong>of</strong> 22.58. Knight finished 20th in the 400 meter run with a time <strong>of</strong> 51.09. Arnett, Tasman Evans (Nassau, Bahamas) and WillCranford (Detroit, MI) all competed in the 60 meter high hurdles. Arnett and Evans both ran personal best times in the finals to place fifth and sixthrespectively. Arnett finished in 8.05, while Evans ran a time <strong>of</strong> 8.21.<strong>The</strong> middle distance events are where the Tritons really made their mark. <strong>The</strong> Tritons scored 19 team points each in both the 800 meter run and the 1mile. In the 800m, freshman Conroy Crossman (Kingston, Jamaica) was crowned national champion in a time <strong>of</strong> 1:54.85, Lieghio was third in 1:55.71while Lewis finished sixth in 1:57.91. Cotter ran to his second national championship in two days in the mile run. Cotter was first in 4:16.29, Lieghiowas close behind in 4:16.96 for fourth place while Crossman finished in fifth with a time <strong>of</strong> 4:18.23. Cotter also finished fifth in the 3,000 meter runon Friday evening with a time <strong>of</strong> 8:37.72.Arnett, Watts and Roland Denson (Kansas City, MO) competed in the 600 meter run. Arnett ran a personal best time <strong>of</strong> 1:20.44 to finish third whileWatts finished fourth with a time <strong>of</strong> 1:20.91. <strong>The</strong> Tritons scored three additional times in the 1000 meter run. Crossman led the charge again, placingfourth in 2:32.52, Lee fifth in 2:32.60 and Juhl eighth in 2:34.72. All three men ran personal bests during the preliminary round to make it to finals. Juhlran his best time by three seconds.Assistant Coach Anthony Acklin was named the NJCAA Assistant Women’s Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year, while Assistant Coach Dee Brown was named the NJ-CAA Assistant Men’s Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Community College men’s indoor track and field team’s previous best finish had been fifthlast season. <strong>The</strong> outdoor track and field championships will be held in Hutchinson, KS on May 20th through the 22nd. Bradfordsuccessfully defended her crown in the pentathlon in addition to winning two more national titles in the high jump and long jump competitions. Besidesearning three national titles, Bradford set five school records and earned five All-America honors over the course <strong>of</strong> the weekend, one in each individualevent she competed in. <strong>The</strong> NJCAA awards All-America honors to the top two individuals in each event, while the Track and Field Coaches Associationawards All-America honors to the top six U.S. citizens in each event and top three all U.S. relays.Bradford’s first championship came in the pentathlon. <strong>The</strong> pentathlon consists <strong>of</strong> the 60 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and 800 meter run.Each performance is assigned a corresponding point value. Bradford accumulated 3764 points, a staggering 546 point margin <strong>of</strong> victory over her nearestcompetitor. In the field events she leaped 5’8.75” for the win in the high jump and 19’ 6.25” in the long jump. Bradford was named the NJCAA Field Athlete<strong>of</strong> the Meet by the Track and Field Coaches Association, an award she also won at the 2009 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. On the track, Bradfordset school records while finishing fourth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time <strong>of</strong> 8.61 seconds and fifth in the 400 meter dash with a time <strong>of</strong> 57.72.Lee set personal bests in every event she competed in, and earned NJCAA All-American honors twice. Lee finished runner-up to Triton teammates inboth horizontal jumps. She placed second to Bradford in the long jump with a mark <strong>of</strong> 19’ 0” and second to Izehi Ileso (Gothenburg, Sweden) in the triplejump with a mark <strong>of</strong> 40’ 7.5”. Ileso was crowned national champion with her leap <strong>of</strong> 41’ 4.25”. Ileso also finished 11th in the long jump competition. <strong>The</strong>Tritons scored three women in the triple jump with Latrice Pritchard (Beloit, WI) placing sixth with a jump <strong>of</strong> 37’ 3”. Both <strong>of</strong> Lee’s second place marksin the jumps were over one foot personal bests. On the track, Lee finished fifth behind Bradford in the 60 meter hurdles with a time <strong>of</strong> 8.70. She set newschool records in both the 60 meter dash and the 200 meter dash, two events she was not even seeded to score in at the national championships. Leefinished third in the 60 meter dash with a time <strong>of</strong> 7.59 seconds, while the winner ran 7.58 seconds. In the 200 meter dash she finished in eighth place witha time <strong>of</strong> 25.17 seconds. In the preliminaries she ran a record time <strong>of</strong> 25.04. Melissa Teape (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) finished 23rd in 26.64 seconds.<strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> had a strong showing in the relayswith three third places finishes. <strong>The</strong> women’sdistance medley relay team (1200m-400m-800-m-1600m) <strong>of</strong> Kara Keller (Middletown), TamaraHunter (Kingston, Jamaica), Shelbie Pettie (Sherrard,IL) and Amanda Vorthmann (Oakland) finishedwith a season’s best time <strong>of</strong> 12:35.05. Keller,Hunter, Pettie and Destiny Arps (Broadview, IL)teamed up in the 4 x 800 meter relay for a season’sbest time <strong>of</strong> 9:41.62, just two seconds shy <strong>of</strong> theschool record. <strong>The</strong> 4 x 400 meter relay team <strong>of</strong> Lee,Hunter, Arps and Bradford finished in 3:50.28.<strong>The</strong> women’s team broke another school record inthe field events this weekend. Jess Fevold (<strong>Iowa</strong>Falls) finished fifth in the shot put with her recordtoss <strong>of</strong> 40’ 11.75”. Teammate Megan Brandt (WebsterCity) finished 17th with a toss <strong>of</strong> 36’ 10.5”.Fevold also competed in the 20-pound weightthrow in which she finished 10th with a mark <strong>of</strong> 45’ 11.75”. <strong>The</strong> final school record was broke in the 1000 meter run. Three Tritons, Ayesha Rumble(Ontario, Canada), Pettie and Liz Crimmins (Fort Dodge) qualified in that event, both Rumble and Pettie advanced to finals. Rumble ran a seven secondpersonal best to finish fifth with a new school record time <strong>of</strong> 3:04.9, Pettie finished ninth in 3:13.2.<strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> also had three competitors in the 600 meter dash, qualifying Arps, Hunter and Rumble. Both Arps and Hunter advanced to finals finishingfourth and eighth places respectively. Keller advanced to finals <strong>of</strong> the 800 meter run with some gutsy racing. She finished sixth in 2:21.04.Nancy Bor (Eldoret, Kenya) and Vorthmann competed in the distance events. Bor finished 15th in all three <strong>of</strong> her events, the mile run, 3,000 metersand 5,000 meters. Vorthmann finished 13th in the 3,000m on Friday, but saved her best race for Saturday in the mile run. Based on seed times, she wasplaced in the slowest heat, heat two <strong>of</strong> two. After watching the first heat run decent times, Vorthmann knew if she had a chance to score she was going toneed to take control and win her heat. That was exactly what she did by winning her heat and finishing eighth overall in a personal best time <strong>of</strong> 5:22.49,nudging out the next runner by a half second.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Community College women’s indoor track and field team’s previous best finish had been fifth in 2008. Assistant Coach Anthony Acklinwas named the NJCAA Assistant Women’s Coach <strong>of</strong> the Year, while Assistant Coach Dee Brown was named the NJCAA Assistant Men’s Coach <strong>of</strong> theYear. Earlier this year, the women’s cross country team finished second in the nation after posting back to back national titles in 2007 and 2008. <strong>The</strong>outdoor track and field championships will be held in Hutchinson, KS on May 20th through the 22nd. <strong>The</strong> Kansas RelaysLAWRENCE, KS - A select group <strong>of</strong> Triton track and field athletes hadthe honor <strong>of</strong> competing at the prestigious Kansas Relays last weekend. Inorder to qualify for the Kansas Relays, athletes must meet certain entrystandards. <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> came away with several exceptional marks fromthe weekend.<strong>The</strong> Tritons did not disappoint in the relays, breaking several school recordsand gaining or improving National qualifying marks. <strong>The</strong> women’s 4x100meter relay team <strong>of</strong> Melissa Teape, Sanchia Lee, Latrice Pritchard, and AGBradford placed fourth in a school record and national qualifying time <strong>of</strong>47.51. <strong>The</strong> women’s 4x400 meter relay team <strong>of</strong> Destiny Arps, Tamara Hunter,Lee, and Bradford finished third in a school record time <strong>of</strong> 3:49.28. Thatmark improves their previous national qualifying time. <strong>The</strong> sprint medleyrelay (200m-200m-400m-800m) also finished third. Lee, Bradford, Arps, andKara Keller set a new school record time <strong>of</strong> 4:07.23. Keller teamed up withLiz Crimmins, Amanda Vorthmann, and Shelbie Pettie in the two mile relayto reach a national qualifying mark with a time <strong>of</strong> 9:53.30. Keller, Teape,Pettie and Vorthmann finished fifth in the distance medley relay (1200m-400m-800m-1600m) in a time <strong>of</strong> 12:46.30.<strong>The</strong> men’s relays were highlighted by a first place finish in the signatureevent <strong>of</strong> any track and field meet, the 4x400 meter relay. Chris Watts, NathanArnett, Roland Denson and Garfield Powell worked together to edge out theUniversity <strong>of</strong> Missouri at the line with a time <strong>of</strong> 3:12.45. <strong>The</strong>ir time improvestheir national qualifying mark set earlier this year. <strong>The</strong> men finished secondto Kansas in the 4x1 mile relay, an event the Tritons have won the past twoyears. Matt Juhl, Terence Lee, Conroy Crossman and Anthony Lieghi<strong>of</strong>inished in 17:25.16, just a second <strong>of</strong>f their own school record and a meretwo seconds behind winner KU. Tasman Evans, Wilmot Wellington, WillCranford, and Powell finished third in the 4x100 meter relay with a mark<strong>of</strong> 41.52. <strong>The</strong> Tritons also qualified their 4x800 meter relay for nationalswith their fourth place finish in that event. Crossman, Lee, Juhl and TomasCotter finished in 7:47.87.<strong>The</strong>re were also some outstanding individual performances throughout themeet for the Triton tracksters. Freshman Anthony Lieghio was second in aschool record time <strong>of</strong> 4:10.23 in the Men’s Invitational Mile. Winning theevent was elite runner, Peter van der Westhuizen <strong>of</strong> South Africa, runningfor Doyle Sport Management in a time <strong>of</strong> 4:06.84. Van der Westhuizen ownsa personal best time <strong>of</strong> 3:56.26, run in Eugene, Oregon last July.Izehi Ileso National Champion Triple Jump (Freshman).Besides the men’s 4x400 meter relay, two individual Triton athletes were crowned Kansas Relays champions. Tomas Cotter ran 9:18.83 to win the men’s3000m steeplechase. In his first attempt <strong>of</strong> the season, he broke the old school record by nearly 12 seconds and also qualified for Nationals. Triton jumper,Izehi Ileso won the triple jump competition and set a new Triton school record with her leap <strong>of</strong> 42’ 4”, which currently leads the nation.In other individual events, AG Bradford and Sanchia Lee finished fourth and eighth places respectively in the 100 hurdles with times <strong>of</strong> 14.23 and 15.17.In the 400 hurdles, Lee finished fifth with a time <strong>of</strong> 61.62. Bradford also placed sixth in the high jump competition at 5’ 5” and seventh in the longjump competition at 19’ 8.75”. Nathan Arnett finishedfourth in the 400 intermediate hurdles with a time<strong>of</strong> 51.95 while teammates Marquis Mack and TroyWalls finished second and fourth places in the highjump. <strong>The</strong> winner <strong>of</strong> the high jump was determined onthe number <strong>of</strong> misses, where Mack came up short t<strong>of</strong>inish second. Tritons Complete Best Season EverHUTCHINSON, KS - <strong>The</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Triton Track and Field squads ended their season on a high point at the NJCAA Outdoor National meet hostedby Hutchinson Community College. <strong>The</strong> women’s team scored 88 points which was good enough to bring home hardware with a third place trophy. <strong>The</strong>women <strong>of</strong> South Plains won the overall team title with a whopping 192 points. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Arizona women were runners up ahead <strong>of</strong> the Tritons witha tally <strong>of</strong> 117 points, and New Mexico Junior College was fourth behind <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> in the standings with 77 points. <strong>The</strong> men’s team also fared wellearning a fourth place finish with 74 points just missing third place by a mere six points. <strong>The</strong> men’s team title also went to South Plains (142 points), with<strong>Central</strong> Arizona taking second (88 points), Barton County was third with 80 points. This represented the highest team finish by both Triton squads.<strong>The</strong> Tritons crowned a total <strong>of</strong> five National Champions over the weekend. AG Bradford won the heptathlon with a new school record mark <strong>of</strong> 5,439points and high jump at 5’ 8.75”. Freshman, Marquis Mack also won the high jump with a school record leap <strong>of</strong> 7’ 2.5”, completing the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong>co-ed sweep <strong>of</strong> the event. Freshman Nathan Arnett won the 400-meter hurdles in a new school record time <strong>of</strong> 51.47. <strong>The</strong> men’s 4x800 meter relay <strong>of</strong>Willard Lewis, Matt Juhl, Terence Lee, and Conroy Crossman were also crowned champions with their new school record mark <strong>of</strong> 7:38.08.Sophomore standout AG Bradford was named NJCAA Field Athlete <strong>of</strong> the Meetby the Coaches Association after defending her heptathlon title, winning the highjump, placing third in the long jump (19-4), and placing third in the 100 meterhurdles. With her heptathlon score, Bradford hits the “B” Standard for the 2010USA Track & Field Championships which will be held at Drake Stadium thisJune. Over the course <strong>of</strong> the meet Bradford won two national titles and earnedAll-America in four events.<strong>The</strong>re were several outstanding <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> performances at the meet. ChrisWatts placed fourth in the men’s 400-meter final, while breaking the school recordin the preliminary rounds with a time <strong>of</strong> 47.48. Freshman Anthony Lieghiohad to dig deep to earn second place, and his second All-America award, in themen’s 800-meter run in 1:53.30 after finishing third in the 1500-meter run with attime <strong>of</strong> 4:03.79. <strong>The</strong> top three finishers in each event are awarded All-Americanby the NJCAA. Teammate Conroy Crossman finished in fifth in the 1500-meter.Tomas Cotter represented well in the men’s steeplechase with a runner-up andAll-America finish and school record time <strong>of</strong> 9:12.42. Cotter also doubled backthe next day to squeak out an eighth place finish from the slow heat <strong>of</strong> the men’s5,000-meter run.Freshman Ayesha Rumble was fifth in the women’s 800-meter run with a schoolSanchia Lee and AG Bradford All American in 100 Hurdles. record time <strong>of</strong> 2:16.03. <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong>’s Female Athlete <strong>of</strong> the Year, Amanda Vorthmann,placed fifth in the women’s steeplechase. Destiny Arps just missed finals<strong>of</strong> the 400 meter run by thousandths <strong>of</strong> a second but established a new school record with at time <strong>of</strong> 56.41.Hurdles proved to be a very crucial event for both <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> squads. Sophomores AG Bradford and Sanchia Lee finished third (13.66) and fourth(14.04) in a wind-aided women’s 100- meter hurdle final. Bradford established a school record in prelims with at time <strong>of</strong> 13.88. Lee also busted out afourth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a school record time <strong>of</strong> 60.89, while Tamara Hunter finishedsixth in 62.87. In addition to winning the 400 hurdles, Nathan Arnett also was fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a wind-aided mark <strong>of</strong> 14.20.Sophomore Tasman Evans qualified for finals in both hurdle races but was unable to compete due to an injury during the 4x100-meter relay.<strong>The</strong> women’s jumps crew scored big points for the team. In addition to Bradford’s places in the high jump and long jump, Sanchia Lee was fifth in thelong jump at 18’ 9.25”. Lee was also third in the triple jump with a new personal best <strong>of</strong> 41’ 2.25” while teammate Izehi Ileso was second with a hop,skip, and a jump <strong>of</strong> 42-02 and freshman Latrice Pritchard was sixth with her new personal best <strong>of</strong> 38’ 8.25”. Lee and Ileso earned All-America honorsin the triple jump. Another jump <strong>of</strong> note, Troy Walls set a new personal record with a leap <strong>of</strong> 6’ 10.75” during the decathlon competition.In the throwing events, Jess Fevold and Megan Brandt finished ninth and tenth respectively in the discus competition while Fevold placed sixth in the shotput. In the men’s shot put, Nick Grosso and James Libe finished ninth and 15th respectively. Grosso also finished 12th in the discus while Justin Ludwikowskifinished 11th in the Javelin. Troy Walls and Ethan Wilkins competed in the two-day, ten-event decathlon. Walls set personal bests in five different events t<strong>of</strong>inish with a new personal record <strong>of</strong> 6,027 points, good for eighth place. Wilkins set personal bests in two events and finished in ninth with 5,957 points.<strong>The</strong> Tritons also had decent outings by the relays. <strong>The</strong> women set new school records in the 4x800-meter relay and the 4x100-meter relay and took fifthin the 4x400-meter relay was fifth. <strong>The</strong> women’s 4x800 relay team <strong>of</strong> Rumble, Vorthmann, Shelbie Pettie, and Kara Keller finished fourth in a time <strong>of</strong>9:23.42. <strong>The</strong> ladies’ 4x100 relay <strong>of</strong> Melissa Teape, Lee, Pritchard, and Ileso finished seventh in the final with a mark <strong>of</strong> 47.76 after running 47.04 inprelims. <strong>The</strong> women’s 4x400 relay team <strong>of</strong> Rumble, Lee, Arps, and Hunter finished in 3:52.48.<strong>The</strong> men also had a strong showing as the relay received All-American status in addition to the title in the 4x800. <strong>The</strong> 4x400 relay team <strong>of</strong> RolandDenson, Watts, Arnett, and Garfield Powell stormed to a third place finish in a time <strong>of</strong> 3:12.09.“We had a great weekend and I am very pleased with how we performed,” said first year head track and field coach Denny Myers. “We had some greatperformances this weekend that carried us. As a program, this was a great showing for us.” In their sixth season <strong>of</strong> existence, the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Women’sand Men’s Track and Field teams finished first and second at the Indoor National Championships in March. Last outdoor season the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> womenfinished sixth while the men finished tenth. After finishing third and fourth respectively this outdoor season, it is safe to say this was the best season inthe history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Track and Field. “We had a young team this year and the kids did some great things,” said Myers. “We are going into nextseason with very high expectations. <strong>The</strong>re is some room to grow and we hope to continue improving.”<strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Track and Field Page 19

Five Track Stars Highlight Night <strong>of</strong> Academic ExcellenceFORT DODGE – <strong>The</strong> <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> men’s and women’s track and field program was represented quite nicely at Wednesday’s Night <strong>of</strong> Academic Excellenceheld at Decker Auditorium.<strong>The</strong> track and field program had five athletes honored throughout the night as one member <strong>of</strong> the men’s track and field team and three members <strong>of</strong> thewomen’s track and field team received academic awards. Nii Ayi (Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges), Amanda Vorthmann (<strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> HonorSociety), Megan Brandt (<strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Honor Society) and Katelyn Smith (<strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Honor Society) were each honored.Nii Ayi (Ghana), Megan Brandt (Webster City, IA), Amanda Vorthmann (Oakland, IA), Wilmot Wellington (Fairfield, IA)<strong>The</strong> track and field program also produced the Male and Female Athletes <strong>of</strong> the Year, which were also presented Tuesday night. Sophomore dual sportathlete Wilmot Wellington was honored for the men. On the track, Wellington qualified for the 2010 NJCAA Indoor National Track and Field Meet inthe 60-meter and 200-meter dash. He helped the Tritons finish second at the Indoor Championships. So far this outdoor season, Wellington’s 4x100meter relay team has also qualified. Wellington was a member <strong>of</strong> the 4 x 100 meter relay team that placed sixth at the 2009 NJCAA Outdoor NationalChampionships, in which they set a school record time <strong>of</strong> 40.70 seconds. <strong>The</strong>ir relay team was named All-American by the Track and Field CoachesAssociation. Last season, Wellington also earned 2nd team Academic-All Region honors.On the football field, Wellington was named Honorable Mention All-America by the NJCAA and rushed for 1,230 yards and 16 touchdowns. He averaged136 yards a game which was sixth nationally and was fourth nationally in touchdowns. Wellington has committed to play football at the University<strong>of</strong> Northern <strong>Iowa</strong>.Amanda Vorthmann, also a dual sport athlete, was named the Female Athlete <strong>of</strong> the Year. Vorthmann is a two-time Coaches Association All-Americanin both Cross Country and the Half Marathon. She helped lead the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> women’s cross country team to a second place finish at the NJCAACross Country Meet in November. She was also a varsity member <strong>of</strong> the 2008 National Championship Cross Country team. Vorthmann was also namedAcademic All-America for her work in the classroom both seasons. She was voted team captain in 2009 as well as the Most Inspirational and HardestWorker by her teammates.On the track, Vorthmann was an NJCAA All-American in 2009 by virtue <strong>of</strong> a second place finish in the 4 x 800 meter relay at the Indoor Track andField Championships, in which the foursome established a new school record time <strong>of</strong> 9:39.48. She was twice named All-American by the Coaches Association,in 2009 when she placed 11th in the 3000 meter run and again in 2010 when she placed eighth in the mile run. She helped <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Central</strong> to itsfirst ever national title in indoor track and field. During the outdoor season she was again named All-American by the Coaches Association when sheplaced 12th in the 1500 meter run in 2009.In the young outdoor season, Vorthmann has already qualified in both the steeplechase and the 10,000-meters. Her time in the steeplechase is currentlythe fastest time in the nation. Vorthmann has signed a national letter <strong>of</strong> intent with Dana College in Blair, NE.“Amanda and Wilmot are not only two great athletes but two great individuals. <strong>The</strong>y are team leaders and very genuine people. We are lucky to havethem with us and we will miss them a great deal as they move on next year.
