Development of an information center for food securitythrough the wild plants.Hayu wanted to transform something unvaluable intosomething valuableCurrent food supply is based on the demands of market &corporations. We are dependent on food from the market, although there are many freely available plants around. There are 2 types of hunger:• obvious hunger: lack of protein and carbohydrates• hidden hunger:• overnourished• undernourishedAsia & Pacific has the highest level of hunger in the world. The2nd highest is AfricaEvery 3 seconds, a person dies of hunger, of which 75% ofhunger related deaths are children.SOLUTION Green revolution: fertilizers, herbicides, farming machinesto increase production Gene revolution: Genetically modified organisms (GMO)[ RCJ Bulletin Vol. 1213-10, Page 1 of 3 ]

Program Manager & Trainer/ Facilitator, BENIH MATAHARI[www.bima-esw.org] (2004 – 2008) Independent Researcher (2003 – 2009)Did research on edible wild plants, had collected about some 300species of plant that can be used for food, completed withinformation on its utilization: culturally, environmentally andeconomically. Researcher, KONPHALINDO (Konsorsium Pelestarian Hutandan Alam Indonesia) & Third World Network [www.twnside.org.sg/]. Did research on organic agricultures and corn hybridseed (see case between farmers vs multinational company), andthe distribution of GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) seeds inIndonesia (2005 – 2008).. Regional Coordinator, PROFAUNA [www.profauna.net](2003 – 2005) ■+ sometimes it is not ethical e.g. using pig genes invegetables (not halal)+ causes health problems e.g. using peanut genes invegetables, people with peanut allergies may eatthe genetically modified vegetable and die of thepeanut allergy without knowing why.+ damage of the environment and human asherbicides/pesticides are genetically placed insidethe genes of the altered plants for them to be moreresistant to weather, etcIn Sweden, farmers are not allowed to grow their ownseeds (passed down by families). They have to getthe seeds certifiedThis seed certification problem also occurred inKediri whereby a group of farmers were arrestedbecause they used local corn seeds (not certifiedseeds)GMO seeds can only yield once. This is so to createdependency from corporations like Monsanto onthe supply of food to the world.SIMPLE SOLUTION Food gardening subsistence farming - growing just enough for ahousehold (the government prevents this bygrabbing land from people) food sharing edible wild plantsWhy edible wild plants? It’s because they're free, cheap, abundant, part of people's lives and culture, much much more nutritious. It’s vulnerabe todanger of extinction if not well researched, studiedand cultivatedSome examples of edible wild plants: greendandelion, krokot (purselane), hibiscus, bouganvilleflowers, kastuba, sintrong, tempuyung.WHY DON'T PEOPLE EAT WILD PLANTS? Prestige: Food for the poor (stigma of eating wildplants connotes poverty, not being able to buyvegetables in the market) strange taste taboo (for example daun kelor is known for drivingevil spirits away, or the negative connotationassociated with eating genjer from the 1965 song"genjer genjer")ACTIVITIES OF MANTASA Research Education: teaching villagers about edible wildplants, teaching them about basic nutrition sincemost of them don't even understand what acarbohydrate is, or what vitamins/minerals are Campaign: e.g. through wild cooking show, slowfood educationPP Yvonne thanked Ms. Hayu, who has come a longway from Surabaya just to delivering such a veryinspiring presentation. She also thanked IPPAngelica, who has invited Ms. Hayu to come for thepresentation at our club.[ RCJ Bulletin Vol. 1213-10, Page 2 of 3 ]
