2003 Spartans’ Roundup“Rebuilding the Tradition”Aurora University is first-year head men’s soccer coachPete Watkins inherits a Spartan team looking to rebuild theprogram’s successful tradition. After a down year for themen’s soccer program in the 2002 campaign, Watkins wastabbed as the man to revitalize the tradition of men’s soccerat AU. “We will work hard this year to become a competitiveteam and continue to grow for years to come as a program,”Watkins said. The key to returning to winning ways will be this year’sgroup of youthful newcomers. “We will attack much morethan team fans saw the last few years. The team will bemore competitive with several of the young newcomersexpected to contribute immediately,” Watkins stated.Newcomers that should see significant playing time andbe difference makers in our program are midfielder juniortransfer Matias Alvarez (Waubonsee CC), and freshmendefender Alex DeGurain (Neuqua Valley HS), forward JeffHorst (Greenville HS), midfielder Larry Heiden (SomonaukHS), forward Rob Michaels (Hinckley-Big Rock HS),midfielder Amador Contreras (Aurora Central Catholic HS),and midfielder Matthew Kilcrease (Wichita Falls Rider HS).Top returners for the Spartans include senior midfielderAdam Gura (Oswego HS). The returning players hope to setthe tone for the future of the Aurora University men’s soccerprogram. Watkins added, “With the amount of youth we willhave in our program this year, growing pains are to beexpected, but the returning upperclassmen will be countedon to provide needed leadership.”Goalkeeping is an area of strength for the Spartans. “Weare really deep in goal, with two newcomers joining our tworeturners,” Watkins said. Junior keeper Pat Drews (WestAurora HS), and sophomore keeper Darin Reed (StreatorHS) will be joined by two talented newcomers incommunity college transfer Josh Simpson (Illinois ValleyCC), and freshman Jim Unger (Lyons Township HS). Allfour look to set the tone for the Spartans in the net.The Spartans have a deep roster that includes a good mixof returners and newcomers that look to contribute to therebuilding of the tradition in men’s soccer. Defenderslooking for action include juniors Jason Lemberg (MaineWest HS) and Tom Dean (Plano HS), transfer Brad Bywater(Waubonsee CC), sophomores Mark Chayka (Plainfield HS)and Cesar Garcia (Riverside-Brookfield HS), and freshmanKyle Solberg (West Aurora HS). Midfielders vying for timeinclude sophomore forward Kyle Kusmider (Batavia HS),junior college transfers Bryan Zavalla (South Mountain CC),and Max Andrews (Waubonsee CC), Ross Solis (Reed CityHS), and Dan Fink (Christian HS).“Fans can expect to see a system that is built around theplayers’ strengths. We are bringing in some talentedattackers this season, so an attacking style should be inplace, but that won’t be known until we can get on the fieldand get to work. We have good roster numbers as well, butagain, once we get on the field we will find out if quantityalso means quality,” Watkins stated.AU Men’s Soccer3
