Bird stock is thebobwhite quail. The atmosphere remindsone of a step back in timewhen horseback riding,mule-drawn wagons and justplain walking were the transportationof the day. Life wasunhurried, food wasSouthern cooking, and firewoodwas the source ofwarmth on a winter day.Field trails are open forpublic participation for thosewho want to ride along orenjoy meals at the lodge.Trap shooting is also availablefor hunters or thosewho want to practice for ahunt.“People are invited tocome out and ride and followthe dogs,” Jackson said.Professional dog trainerswill be competing for a cashprize and first, second andthird place. He bought the SantaGertrudis cattle from KingRanch in South Texas, thelargest ranch in the world. Also pastured are buffalo, donkeys, and about 35 horses,he said.“The donkeys multiplylike rabbits and you can’tgive them away,” he saidwith a laugh.Fitch was injured in theservice when the plane hewas flying lost power after itwas catapulted off the USSPhillipine Sea light carrier. The planes were built tocounteract the JapaneseZeros, during World War II,he said.He injured his back whenthe plane hit the water.“They said I would neverwalk again, but I did,” Fitchsaid. “I went back to fleet andflew another six to eightmonths.”It is his love of the landthat keeps him going.“I love to make thingsgrow and all that,” he said.“That’s what has kept mehere.”Holly Springs policerespond to 106 callsHolly Springs police officersresponded to 106 callslast week, according to chiefWilliam Hollowell.Calls included – disturbances,11; alarms, 24; larcenies,2; assaults, 3; burglaries,1; accidents, 6; assists to agencies,2; 911 hang-ups, 3; autotheft, 1; domestics, 7; funeralescorts, 2; checkups on shutins,2; auto burglaries, 1; shotsfired, 2; run-away, 1; and 38miscellaneous calls. Just days ago, theOregon Ducks were ratedas number one, replacingthe Crimson Tide. By gametime in week 12 onSaturday, there had been aflip and Kansas State wasranked one in the nation bythe BCS and Oregon wastwo. Notre Dame was ratedthree and remained thatway until they killed WakeForest on Saturday. Albeitpractically assured a BCSbowl berth, the Irish are notreally touted as a nationaltitle holder. Don’t ask.Anyone would be hardpressed to tell you what gotinto the Baylor Bears. Theybeat the Mulligan stew outof the number one team (54-24), the Kansas StateWildcats. This was the firsttime the Bears had everbeaten a number-onerankedteam. Maybe theywere just mad that theStanford Lady Cardinalended the Lady Bears’ 42-game basketball winningstreak in Hawaii on Friday. The Lady Bears had compileda 40-game seasonwhich included the nationalchampionship. Baylor’scoach (Kim Mulkey) statedthat it could have been theHawaiian venue. The games Saturdayreally shook the old coffeemaker. Probably more thanone team woke up onSunday and exclaimed,“What the heck happened?”The Irish had emerged asnumber one followed by theCrimson Tide. Don’t wantto brag, but a certain sportshack told ya’ll that the Tidewas not done yet.Once again, it wouldappear that the conference(SEC), which everyoneloves to hate, is poised totake center stage again inthe big picture. If you noticein the SEC, the leaders areonly separated by one ortwo losses. In the East,Georgia 7-1 (10-1), Florida7-1 (10-1), South Carolina 6-2 (9-2) and in the West,Alabama 6-1 (10-1), LSU 5-2(9-2), Texas A&M 5-2 (9-2).And then there weretwo. Notre Dame and OhioState are the only teamswithout losses. On thenational list Georgia isthree, and Ohio State isfour; Oregon drops to numberfive (four in USA). TheSEC maintains six slots inthe rankings. The BCS picture shouldbecome crystal clear at theend of next week.I must mention the olealma mater. Ole Miss letanother one slip away.Charlie Farris summed itup best after the Vanderbiltloss – “We have to figure outa way to stop losing gameswhich we have alreadywon.” Ditto, Charles. We at The SouthReporter are thankful thatwe have such a graciousreadership and we want towish all of you every bountifulblessing possible.Have a safe and happyThanksgiving.Photos by Barry BurlesonThe Marshall sideline, led by head coach Bart Jenkins (front), celebrates as Roy Billions’ field goal splits the uprights in the closing seconds Friday night in Batesville.MA rallies for North State crownBy BARRY BURLESONEditorRoy Billions had notattempted a field goal in agame all season.
