BHAT SIKHS WERE AT THE FRONT IN<br />

UK FOR THE Ç SIKH RELIGION BELIEF<br />

This was that time when in the India house the trade<br />

minister S. Manmohan Singh of Rawalpindi was<br />

working there and the second one was another<br />

Manmohan Singh of Patiala who won the aeroplane<br />

race in 1933 he was here in UK as well. Both of these<br />

really religious persons got together and tried to get<br />

both <strong>Gurdwara</strong>’s together again. They set up a<br />

meeting with Dr Diwan Singh and other committee<br />

members and came to the East <strong>Gurdwara</strong> at the<br />

Birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1938 and in full<br />

Diwan on the stage Dr Diwan Singh withdrew his word<br />

back and said in the future he will treat everyone with<br />

the same respect. Like this after 2 years thanks to<br />

these two Gursikh the two <strong>Gurdwara</strong>’s became one<br />

again and as before Gurpurabh started to be<br />

celebrated together again.<br />

On 3 rd September 1939 the Second World War started,<br />

Germany started to pour down bombs on Britain. Black<br />

outs and air raids became the everyday experience and<br />

the care free people who use to get a good night sleep<br />

became the thing of the past. The whole of Britain<br />

became another Mahabharata. The <strong>Sikh</strong>s who were<br />

living in London went away in to the towns in the country<br />

side. But during all that time S. Sawaran Singh Ji Chakal<br />

who was the General Secretary of the Khalsa Jatha<br />

<strong>Gurdwara</strong> decided to stay in the <strong>Gurdwara</strong> it self. A<br />

Bomb did fall on one side of the <strong>Gurdwara</strong> but no one got<br />

hurt. During this turbulent time the <strong>Sikh</strong>s carried on<br />

celebrating the Gurpurabh always with an Akhanpath<br />

and kept the <strong>Gurdwara</strong> open, majority of the <strong>Sikh</strong>s who<br />

were doing that at that time were from the <strong>Bhat</strong> <strong>Sikh</strong><br />

community. They all use to travel where never they went<br />

and after the celebration would go back again. This<br />

routine was kept going right through the War.<br />

Change in Management<br />

Dr Diwan Singh remained the chair of the <strong>Gurdwara</strong><br />

for so long that he was treating the place as his own<br />

and he never thought of a change in the Management.<br />

But the rest of the people did want a change and<br />

every one was thinking who will be managing now and<br />

at that time the <strong>Bhat</strong> <strong>Sikh</strong> shone up like a star and it<br />

was them who use to come and take leadership in the<br />

celebrations so it was felt to put them forward and the<br />

first ever <strong>Bhat</strong> to be put forward as the Chairman was<br />

S. Diwan Singh Ji Dhariwal. After the of the Birthday<br />

of Sri Guru Nanak Dave Ji Gurpurabh celebration the<br />

election use to take place of the Management<br />

committee as well as for the chairman and every year<br />

no one use to stand against Dr Diwan Singh and he<br />

use to get elected un-opposed and carried on this way<br />

for the last 10 years. But after the Gurpurabh of Guru<br />

Nanak Dave Ji in 1946 was a different position, there<br />

were two candidates with the same name standing for<br />

the chair one was Dr. Diwan Singh whose name was<br />

well known throughout the UK and the other was S.<br />

Diwan Singh Dhariwal who was also known in the<br />

whole of the UK who use to attend the <strong>Gurdwara</strong> while<br />

the bombs were falling all over the place in London.<br />

So, S. Diwan Singh Ji Dhariwal was chosen chair and<br />

the other committee members were, vice chairman S.<br />

Jagat Singh Ji was elected, Gen: secretary was S.<br />

Sawaran Singh Chakal, Treasurer was Shri G.S Dara,<br />

Jathedar was Baba Asa Singh Ji and assistant Jathedar<br />

was S. Phuman Singh Ji. Although the election<br />

Was only for one year but the committee was elected<br />

next years as well. So in this way S. Diwan Singh Ji<br />

Dhariwal remained as the Chair of the Khalsa Jatha British<br />

Isle for two years. Remember that he was also the general<br />

secretary of the Changa <strong>Bhat</strong>ra Naujwan Sabah UK.<br />

Who was elected on 15 th August in 1939. This way the<br />

name of <strong>Sangat</strong> <strong>Bhat</strong>ra Samparda also became known<br />

through out the UK as well.<br />

The next Chairman elected was S. Sant<br />

Singh Ji Pardesi Ji<br />

Who came to Aden in 1936 with Jhanda Singh Patel<br />

and S. Waryam Singh Bhai where the writer met up with<br />

them there and the same year came to Britain. The<br />

second trip he did was when he came via Africa and<br />

reached U.K with 16 of his community person in 1938.<br />

The writer goes on to say that Pardesi Ji was a very<br />

religious and a Puran Gursikh where he had the good<br />

fortune of staying together with him for some time. He<br />

was one of the founder members of the <strong>Bhat</strong>ra<br />

Samparda Naujwan Sabha UK which was inaugurated,<br />

on 15 th August in 1939 and when S. Sant Singh Ji<br />

Pardesi Ji became the vice Chairman and when the<br />

chairman Baboo Jeewan Singh Ji went to South Africa<br />

allthe Chairman duties were conducted by S. Sant<br />

Singh Ji Pardesi Ji. In 1949 he became the Chairman of<br />

the Khalsa Jatha British Isle. During this year he looked<br />

after the interest of all the <strong>Sikh</strong>s in UK that he became<br />

well known to everyone. By this time this <strong>Gurdwara</strong><br />

became known as the social cultural and a religious<br />

centre and in 1951 the members of this <strong>Gurdwara</strong> were<br />

barrister, solicitors, Doctors and professors with many<br />

degrees but with the help of the <strong>Bhat</strong> community as well<br />

as the local Jat <strong>Sikh</strong>s the Chairmanship was awarded to<br />

Gy Rattan Singh Ji Shad when I myself was also<br />

present at that election at the age of 15 and this was his<br />

committee. Vice chairman S. Jagat Singh Ji, General<br />

Secretary S. Rattan Singh Ji as well as S. Rattan Singh<br />

Ji Kendly, Secretary S. Pakhar Singh Ji, Treasurer S.<br />

Mohindar Singh, assistant Treasurer S. Karpan Singh Ji,<br />

checker S.GS Dara, Jathedar Baba Asa Singh Ji, and<br />

assistant Jathedar S. Phuman Singh JI.<br />

This cabinet came forward and also brought in some<br />

changes within the Management as well as the name of<br />

the <strong>Gurdwara</strong>. They set up a weekly Diwan, changed<br />

the name of the Bupindra Dharamsalla to Bupindra<br />

<strong>Gurdwara</strong>, the anniversary of S. Udham Singh Ji<br />

Shaheed was remembered, The High commissioner of<br />

France S. Harditt Singh was asked to attend the<br />

Gurpurabh and holiday was sanctioned in the London<br />

high commissioner for all the <strong>Sikh</strong> at the embassy.<br />

Arrangement was made to meet the passengers coming<br />

from India to meet them at the Tilbury dock in London<br />

and escort them to safety.<br />

Central <strong>Gurdwara</strong> should be<br />

seen as an historical place<br />

The great Building of the central <strong>Gurdwara</strong> London was a<br />

church of the Salvation Army. In 1964 it was purchased<br />

with the cost of £25,000 and £26,000 was spent on its<br />

repairs. The first stone was laid by Sant Fateh Singh Ji in<br />

1967 and every one carried on working on it and on 13 th<br />

April 1970 it was opened on the Wasakhi day.<br />

Remembering that Bupindra <strong>Sikh</strong> <strong>Gurdwara</strong> was the first<br />

ever <strong>Gurdwara</strong> set up in Europe there for it is historical.<br />
