Bhat Sikh Gurdwara Council
Do you remember that we had a meeting in the community
centre of the Birmingham High gate Gurdwara and community
centre when it was unanimously agreed that we should develop
an organisation of all of the Bhat Sikh Gurdwara’s and every
one agreed that it should be Bhat Sikh Gurdwara Council and
we said we will hold another meeting again.
During that time we managed to obtain some of the paperwork
of the old Sangat Bhatra Samparda UK and after that we held
another meeting in Guru Ramdas Ji Gurdwara again in
Birmingham, when not many of the Gurdwara’s turned up and it
was decided to call another meeting. Now we are going to
organise another meeting in the Highgate Gurdwara and the
community centre Saturday the 30 th July. The management
committee have said yes to us. what we are doing is giving this
information in Advance to all of our Gurdwara’s but further
notice will be sent to all of Bhat Sikh the Gurdwara’s regarding
the meeting so please look out for that letter and do come.
What we wish to do is to decide in this meeting is:-
On your arrival from 2pm tea will be served meeting will start
3pm to 6pm sharp to discuss and
1) PASS THE NAME AGAIN. AND IT’S CONSTITUTION.
2) HOW THE COUNCIL WILL RUN AND BE FUNDED
3) DECIDE ON WHERE THE HEAD OFFICE IS GOING TO BE
4) HOW MANY MEMBERS WILL BE IN THE MAIN COMMITTEE?
5)HOW MANY MEMBERS WILL BE IN THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE,
6)WHEN AND WHERE THE ELECTION WILL BE HELD.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT WE WANT TO ESTABLISHED
THIS COUNCIL ONLY AMONG THE BHAT SIKH GURDWARAS ONCE THE
COUNCIL IS UP AND RUNNING WE WILL THEN SEND OUR
REPRESETATIVES TO OTHER ORGANISATIONS SO THAT THEY
REPRESENT OUR COUNCIL. IF ANY GURDWARA IS MEMBER OF ANY
OTHER ORGANISATION THAT IS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS AS LONG AS
THEY BECOME FULLY PLEDGED MEMBER OF THIS COUNCIL. SO
REMEMBER THAT WE WILL BE LOOKING FOR YOUR GURDWARA

srDWjlI The Late S. Lakha Singh Ji Digpal 1919- 1986 and
Late Mata ÇJogindar
Kaur Ji Digpal 1918- 1996
S. Lakha Singh Ji Digpal was born in a small village
called Bhadewala (now in Pakistan).in 1919.
He was one of the six children and was the eldest
son of S. Rawel Singh Ji Digpal and Mata Sant Kaur.
Being the eldest he also had many responsibilities
from a very early age in his life. Therefore started
working as a salesman in India selling clothes and
fabrics. In 1936 he was married at the age of 17 and
had five children who were all were born in India. The
oldest, is Harbhajan Kaur, Pardoman Singh,
Harcharan Singh, Kulwant Kaur, and Biant Kaur.
Being the oldest child and with many responsibilities
for the whole family he found making a good living in
India was very tough, so in 1952 decided to come to
Britain and try and make a new life here for himself
as well as for his whole family.
When he arrived in Britain he started selling clothes
here as well. Having a keen interest in the property
business he invested his time and money in to buying
and selling and selling houses. Having setteled and
established him self in UK in 1957 he brought his
entire family over to UK and quickly setteled in
Ipswich with his whole family.
He went on to have three more children who were
born in Ipswich and they were Jaswant Singh,
Harsharan Kaur and Arjan Singh.
Like his Father S. Lakha Singh Ji was a Puran
Gursikh and a very religious man who even had a
Guru Granth Sahib Ji in his own house and was a
daily worshipper.
In 1973 S. Lakha Singh Ji Digpal founded the first

S. Harcharan Singh, The late S Pardoman Singh, S.
Jaswant Singh, and Arjan Singh as well as their
family are remembering their Mother and father on
25 th anniversary of their father S. Lakha Singh JI
Digpal and 15 th anniversary of their mother Mata
Jogindar Kaur Digpal by having donated an
Akhanpath in their sweet memories, which started on
Friday the 27 th may and Bhog was on the 29 th May
which ended with Ragi Jatha conducting a manhore
kirtan. Lots of money was given out by all the
brothers as well as the are sponsoring this issue of
the Rasala as well and £132 was also sent to the
Rasala by all the sons and Grandsons for which we
would like to thank all of this Digpal family and P3
Would wish to pray for the Soul of the Late S. Lakha Singh
Ji Digpal who past away peacefully on 24 th May 1986 and
Mata Jogindar Kaur Ji passed away on 17 th December
1996 may the Waheguru give them abode at his feets and
may he give lots of courage to the whole of this Digpal
family so that they may bear the lost of their loved ones.

UK FOR THE Ç SIKH RELIGION BELIEF
To link this article please read issue 66 page 13.
This was that time when in the India house the trade
minister S. Manmohan Singh of Rawalpindi was
working there and the second one was another
Manmohan Singh of Patiala who won the aeroplane
race in 1933 he was here in UK as well. Both of these
really religious persons got together and tried to get
both Gurdwara’s together again. They set up a
meeting with Dr Diwan Singh and other committee
members and came to the East Gurdwara at the
Birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1938 and in full
Diwan on the stage Dr Diwan Singh withdrew his word
back and said in the future he will treat everyone with
the same respect. Like this after 2 years thanks to
these two Gursikh the two Gurdwara’s became one
again and as before Gurpurabh started to be
celebrated together again.
On 3 rd September 1939 the Second World War started,
Germany started to pour down bombs on Britain. Black
outs and air raids became the everyday experience and
the care free people who use to get a good night sleep
became the thing of the past. The whole of Britain
became another Mahabharata. The Sikhs who were
living in London went away in to the towns in the country
side. But during all that time S. Sawaran Singh Ji Chakal
who was the General Secretary of the Khalsa Jatha
Gurdwara decided to stay in the Gurdwara it self. A
Bomb did fall on one side of the Gurdwara but no one got
hurt. During this turbulent time the Sikhs carried on
celebrating the Gurpurabh always with an Akhanpath
and kept the Gurdwara open, majority of the Sikhs who
were doing that at that time were from the Bhat Sikh
community. They all use to travel where never they went
and after the celebration would go back again. This
routine was kept going right through the War.
Change in Management
Dr Diwan Singh remained the chair of the Gurdwara
for so long that he was treating the place as his own
and he never thought of a change in the Management.
But the rest of the people did want a change and
every one was thinking who will be managing now and
at that time the Bhat Sikh shone up like a star and it
was them who use to come and take leadership in the
celebrations so it was felt to put them forward and the
first ever Bhat to be put forward as the Chairman was
S. Diwan Singh Ji Dhariwal. After the of the Birthday
of Sri Guru Nanak Dave Ji Gurpurabh celebration the
election use to take place of the Management
committee as well as for the chairman and every year
no one use to stand against Dr Diwan Singh and he
use to get elected un-opposed and carried on this way
for the last 10 years. But after the Gurpurabh of Guru
Nanak Dave Ji in 1946 was a different position, there
were two candidates with the same name standing for
the chair one was Dr. Diwan Singh whose name was
well known throughout the UK and the other was S.
Diwan Singh Dhariwal who was also known in the
whole of the UK who use to attend the Gurdwara while
the bombs were falling all over the place in London.
So, S. Diwan Singh Ji Dhariwal was chosen chair and
the other committee members were, vice chairman S.
Jagat Singh Ji was elected, Gen: secretary was S.
Sawaran Singh Chakal, Treasurer was Shri G.S Dara,
Jathedar was Baba Asa Singh Ji and assistant Jathedar
was S. Phuman Singh Ji. Although the election
Was only for one year but the committee was elected
next years as well. So in this way S. Diwan Singh Ji
Dhariwal remained as the Chair of the Khalsa Jatha British
Isle for two years. Remember that he was also the general
secretary of the Changa Bhatra Naujwan Sabah UK.
Who was elected on 15 th August in 1939. This way the
name of Sangat Bhatra Samparda also became known
through out the UK as well.
The next Chairman elected was S. Sant
Singh Ji Pardesi Ji
Who came to Aden in 1936 with Jhanda Singh Patel
and S. Waryam Singh Bhai where the writer met up with
them there and the same year came to Britain. The
second trip he did was when he came via Africa and
reached U.K with 16 of his community person in 1938.
The writer goes on to say that Pardesi Ji was a very
religious and a Puran Gursikh where he had the good
fortune of staying together with him for some time. He
was one of the founder members of the Bhatra
Samparda Naujwan Sabha UK which was inaugurated,
on 15 th August in 1939 and when S. Sant Singh Ji
Pardesi Ji became the vice Chairman and when the
chairman Baboo Jeewan Singh Ji went to South Africa
allthe Chairman duties were conducted by S. Sant
Singh Ji Pardesi Ji. In 1949 he became the Chairman of
the Khalsa Jatha British Isle. During this year he looked
after the interest of all the Sikhs in UK that he became
well known to everyone. By this time this Gurdwara
became known as the social cultural and a religious
centre and in 1951 the members of this Gurdwara were
barrister, solicitors, Doctors and professors with many
degrees but with the help of the Bhat community as well
as the local Jat Sikhs the Chairmanship was awarded to
Gy Rattan Singh Ji Shad when I myself was also
present at that election at the age of 15 and this was his
committee. Vice chairman S. Jagat Singh Ji, General
Secretary S. Rattan Singh Ji as well as S. Rattan Singh
Ji Kendly, Secretary S. Pakhar Singh Ji, Treasurer S.
Mohindar Singh, assistant Treasurer S. Karpan Singh Ji,
checker S.GS Dara, Jathedar Baba Asa Singh Ji, and
assistant Jathedar S. Phuman Singh JI.
This cabinet came forward and also brought in some
changes within the Management as well as the name of
the Gurdwara. They set up a weekly Diwan, changed
the name of the Bupindra Dharamsalla to Bupindra
Gurdwara, the anniversary of S. Udham Singh Ji
Shaheed was remembered, The High commissioner of
France S. Harditt Singh was asked to attend the
Gurpurabh and holiday was sanctioned in the London
high commissioner for all the Sikh at the embassy.
Arrangement was made to meet the passengers coming
from India to meet them at the Tilbury dock in London
and escort them to safety.
Central Gurdwara should be
seen as an historical place
The great Building of the central Gurdwara London was a
church of the Salvation Army. In 1964 it was purchased
with the cost of £25,000 and £26,000 was spent on its
repairs. The first stone was laid by Sant Fateh Singh Ji in
1967 and every one carried on working on it and on 13 th
April 1970 it was opened on the Wasakhi day.
Remembering that Bupindra Sikh Gurdwara was the first
ever Gurdwara set up in Europe there for it is historical.

book in January 2010 called Ki Bhatre Bhat Brahmin Han
Ja Rajpoot. In Çwhich
he feels and is adamant that Bhats
are Brahmin and a very low class one at that and Bhatre
are Rajpoot. He is trying to get his theory off the Ground
by giving lots of citations from the old Magazine Sangat
Samachar as well as picking up information from GY.
Makhmoor Ji’s book, Gy. Rattan Singh’s Shad Ji book
Krantic Lehar da it has as well as from the books of Gy.
Gian Singh Araf Ji. If you would like to order a book from

going to tell you as to what he has written about you, eg
all the Gotan. So let us start with, he goes on to say that
he is going to tell us about the 22 Jatan of the Bhatra
Sikh community. Also order Bhatra Rajput Vansh Prampra
There are only proper 10 gotan of the community and
these are 1. Rathore, 2. Bhatti, 3. Kushwha, 4. Taak,
5. Bence, 6. Larh, 7.Guarh, 8.Badgujar,9. Chohan. And
the 10 th . is Parmar. He goes on to say that these are
the 10 main ones then also they have branches and they
are1. Lakhanpal, 2.Digwa, 3. Bhakar, 4. Roudh,
5.Potiwal (Patwal) 6. Lohiae, 7. Kaang
8. Naikteen, 9.Utarwal, 10.Kehnthe or Kehnth. Then
there are 3 new branches which are 1. Suwalis, 2.Golea,
3.yougi. He goes on to say that these are 3 branches are
also branches but now they are also known as the proper
Gotan and do marry within each other gotan.
1. Rathore –
One of the Jaats of the Rajpoots and this is Suraj vanshi
Marwar, and in Bikaner this Jaat can be found and that is
where they are setteled. According to the Mahankosh
page 1018 column 3)1 These Jaat came out of Sri Ram
younger son Kush. Its old name use to be Rashterkoot
and from there slowly it came to Rashter koot the slowly
became to be known as Raoter then Rathore with V and
now it is Rathore.
Some of the Kabila of Kush came to the west; here they
had their kingdom called Maan Khera. One section came
and set up a kingdom in Maharashtra and here they
spread them selves as far away as Kathiawar, Bindaoo,
and to Kanaouj. In year 1243 e or there about they came
to Marwar and the Rathores made their Rajdhani in
Jodhpur, Bikaner. Rathore are well known for their might
see Rajput Wanshawali page 73-75.
Further on this Kabila got divided in to 135 to 140
branches in the Bhatra Community Rathore and its Swali
branch can be found
2. Bhatti :-
According to Colonel Todd that Bhatti were born in the
city of Jaisalmair and in the Yadve family that is why they
call them Bhatti. Eventually they were controlling all the
land in the east side of the Garah River.(history of
Rajasthan page 33)
One section of the Bhatti community came to the hilly
side of Punjab and established a Kingdome in 623e and
at one time they even set up their own calendar called
Bhateek. Bhatner and Bathinda were some of their towns
where they use to live. In Pindi it self there was a great
hero Dula Bhatti, and then at the time of Guru Nanak dev
Ji there was this famous Rai Bulaar Bhatti.
The well to do people of Patiala, Nabha, Sangroor link
them selves Rajput Bhatti ( Rajput Wanshawali page
214)Bhatti are Chandar wanshi Rajput. Lots of the Bhatti
became Muslims. They are divided in to lots of different
sections. There is’nt an area of Punjab where you will not
see Bhatti Rajput. Within the Bhat Sikh community there
is a prominent kinship. For further information see Bhatra
Rajput vansh prampra.
3.Chohan:- According to Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha the
Chohan are one of the Jaats of the Rajput. It is believed
and as the saying goes that the Chohan had four arms.
Maharaja Prithviraj Raj Chohan belonged to this Jaat as
well. (Mahan Kosh page 478). According to Colonel Taad
Chohan- (Cheman) is Rajput, and are most valiant, brave,
fearless and high spirited community. The Chohan have 24
different branches (history of Rajasthan page 36-371) lots
of different places there are Jaat who also call them selves
Chohan. In Punjab many of the Khinchi and Varech are
also call them selves Chohan. According to the new finds
the Chohan’s are suraj vanshi Rajput. He goes on to say
that he has list of 150 names which also link the Chohan to
Gola (Goelwal or goelsan). He goes on to say that this Jaat
remembers their ancestors and starts from Ravgoga
Chohan. Chohan can be found in all parts of the Punjab
and are a very big Kabila.
4.Gola:- Within the Bhatra Sikh community Gola is
well known Jaat, some Golea also calling them
selves Chohan. The Gola Jaat also remembers their
ancestors and starts with the Chohan Ravgoga.
According to some writers that from the 24 different
branches of the Chohan Gola is also one of the old
ones among them. The Gola have been known to be
called Goelwal, Gull, Golawal, and Golason are the
names of Gola Jaat. According to Gy Makhmoor he
believes that Gola are Gohale Rajput. But this writer
say he is not correct and that Golea really are
Chohan as well as they are Suraj Vanshi Rajput.
5 Lakhanpal:- In the Bhatra Sikh community
Lakhanpal as well as their branch Landa can be
found. The Lakhanpal Jaat can also be found in
among the Rajput as well as barbers and the Nayee
community. According to Mr HS Rose this is part of
the Rajput’s and that they are Chander Vanshi.
Gy Makhmoor Ji says that this Jaat started from the
14 sons of Raja Pushkar and that one of the sons
was called Lakhanpal. But Rose goes on to say that
this Jaat can also be found in the Barbers Nayee
Kabila. But according to this writer he says that this
Kabila was born in Parmar Wrah family and that they
are the off spring of Raja of Bathinda who was called
Lakhanpal who can also be found in the Gill Jaats as
well. A branch of Lakhanpal and Landae can also be
found in the Gill Jaats as well. He goes on to say that
I have written them as Suraj Vanshi in my other book.
He goes on to say that if we get out of the arguments
of Suraj Vanshi or Chander Vansi then this becomes
clear that this Lakhanpal Kabila is Rajput, and that
they are not Brahmin of Bhat background. The Landa
Jaat in the form of Lundea can be found in kamboan
or Kambojan community as well. The Kamboje Kabila
believes that they are Kasturi Brhamin.
Well here are some of our Jaatan, Kabilea see what
you make of your own, I have translated as best as I
can, but please do give us some feedback from these
so that we can come to you with the rest of them like
Bhakar, Jogi, Sheri, Budgujar or Goojra, Roudh,
Digwa, Parmar, panwar, Potiwal, Patwal, Lohiae,

‘queeni’ Balwindar Kaur, daughter of our late sister
Hans Kaur and wife of S. Fouja Singh Roudh of
Southampton has passed away on 15 th June.
After fighting so many years with the dialyses
Machine. She was only 57/58 years old.
Her Antim Sanskar was held on Tuesday 21 st June.
She has left behind her husband, five daughters and
a son.
We wish to portray our sympathy to our dearest
Fouja Singh as well as to her five daughters and rest
of her family two brothers as well as two sisters.
Our prayer are that may the Waheguru portray peace
on her soul and give strength and courage to her

I am writing this letter to say that I have received the issue
66 and it is very interesting to read, I am receiving the
Rasala Bhat Sangat Sandesh on a regularly basis and I
always appreciate and value the time and the commitment
and dedication that you, your self, as well as your team put
in to carrying on publishing and distributing the Rasala to
all the Bhat Sangat Gurdwara’s as well as to your regulars
members. Please carry on with your good work.
In the last issue number 66 you have perhaps made a
mistake when you wrote that my great grand father Bapu
S. Hakam Singh Ji Taoo had three sons.
But in fact he had four sons and they were

Taoo had 4 sons and that the youngest one of the four
brothers was in fact your Grandfather S. Amar Singh
Phelwan. But dear one I did not write that S. Hakam Singh
Ji Taoo had three sons all I did write was that the first
people to land in Britain was six people and those were S.
Hakam Singh Ji Taoo and his three sons, Hari Singh JI
Raja, S. Nihal Singh Ji and S. Veer Singh Ji Gorkha as well
as S. Pashora Singh Gola and his son Khushal Singh Gola.
Perhaps therefor your grandfather was busy doing
Phelwani and thus he did not come with his father and
brothers as the 4 th . S. Hakam Singh and his three sons and
Pashora Singh and his son. That made 6.The meeting that
took place on 6 th June 1939 in 8 Golding Street S. Hakam
Singh Taoo and his four sons did not take part in that
although 22 Bhat Sikh individuals did. Then on 15 th August
1939 A general Meeting took place in 8 Golding Street
once again and 51 people were present but Bapu Hakam
Singh Ji or his 4 sons were not in that meeting also, when
they selected a name for the of the organisation called
Changa Bhatra Naujwan Sabha UK. But then when 34
Indian boarded the Haroona Maroo ship on 21st June 1940
S. Hakam Singh Ji was not on that list but four of his sons
were not just Amar Singh Ji Phelwan but the other three
brothers as well. I do hope that this clears the matter. Can I
say it was great to hear from you and that you should carry
on informing us say after the second or the third issue of
the Bhat Sangat Sandesh and let us know that the Rasala
Bhat Sangat Sandesh is still coming? Today a Rasala
came back from Edinburgh. We sent it back again.
Bapu Hakam Singh Ji Taoo was the son of S. Buta Singh Ji
Rathore and was the grandson of Khanda Singh Rathore.

All of our community is urged that lots of our Gurdwara’s
are still using meet in their Langar hall, if some of them
do not cook it there but are bringing it cooked from out
side and are serving it in the langar hall, this practice
must stop. In the olden says we all use to do it and even
that was wrong, but we had no other option at that time,
but now we have all the resources within our reach that
is why we should stop this practice. The younger
generation of all Sikhs of today are thinking very far
ahead and are filming secretly within our Gurdwara’s and
then are taking it in front of the media we should
therefore never give them any chance to point a finger
towards us. It does not matter really speaking as to who
they are, what they are that should not concern us as
long as we abide by the ruling as to how a Gurdwara
should be run and how it should function, remember our
Gurdwara’s are not Dharamsalla but they have the
Saroop of our eternal Guru, Guru Granth Sahib Ji, so it is
the house of the Guru and we all needs to respect it and
in return the Guru as well as all the others will also
respect us. Please look and digest this article very

Well here we are at the top of the summer season
while writing this editorial we were told that it was
going to be 30 degree and how right they were it was
even touching 31 or 32, but we were told it was going
to hotter in London, but only for a day or so. We do
very much hope that you did get the Rasala safely as

Gurdwara’s to get together and do things collectively and
not on our own, because at the present moment the left
hand does not know what is the right hand is doing.
I am not saying that they should not pass any
thing that they want to better the situation in all of our
community but to let other Gurdwara’s know what you have
decided and why so that every other Gurdwara will know
what you have decided and why. Really speaking it does
not matter what different issues you have decided on,
like the Janjh, Janjis, dowry, coaches etc, etc. But also

When I was in Nottingham few weeks a go I heard in
there that one of our brother has started or developed
www.bhatsikhrishta.com I found out that he his from
London, Maybe if he writes to us to explain how it works
we can included in our Rasala. Another one of our
brother in Southampton has got some sort of
matchmaker going but we still don’t know who it is. And
we have not seen any thing of it. It would have been
better to work together.

running we will put the information of any one seeking to

What is Communities First?
Communities First is funded by The Welsh
Assembly Government.
It is a long term program which aims to improve
