I guess, eventoday, those things I wastaught are right and wrongshape my convictions inareas such as politics, ethicsor how to get along withothers. Sometimes whenthings are wrong enoughyou have to be willing tospeak up.The school board’s failureto renew the middle schoolprincipal’s contract caughtmy attention recently. Ihave told several peoplethat if I was going to movemy child to a middle schoolin Wise County it would beto Chico. There is a verysimple reason for that. Hisname is Maury Martin.I met Mr. Martin throughthe 4-H in Chico, wheremy kids have been activelyinvolved for about eightyears. He and his familyvolunteer their time helpingkids with their animalsand show projects. He hasbeen tremendously helpfulto us in starting our owngroup of show animals. Ialso know he is active andknowledgeable in LittleDribblers and Chico baseball.I think it is wonderfulto have teachers and administratorsinvolved withkids outside the classrorom.Teaching life lessons is alsoa valuable aspect of shapingyoung people. I haveobserved Mr. Martin do thismany times. That’s what makes thisschool board decision evenmore puzzling. Mr. Martin’sschool, Chico Middle School, rates as the best in thecounty. It met AYP standardsbetter than any otherin the county. As a matter offact, it was the only middleschool in the county to excelin all four categories. Teachers’morale is high and wasdemonstrated at the boardmeeting when a large majorityof the teachers turnedout in support of his leadership.Several spoke on hisbehalf.Does their voice matter?Aren’t they trainedin the area of education?Shouldn’t they be heard? What more would anyonewant? All of these reasonscombine to my simple mindto make for an easy andright decision to extend hiscontract.Sadly, it seems egos andagendas can derail whatis right. Is this really thecourse that Chico willchoose to travel undertheir current leadership? The facts are not pretty. In the last few years theprincipals’ jobs at both thehigh school and elementaryschools best resemble thegame of musical chairs. Mr.Martin has been the oneconstant in the district untilnow. The results he andhis teachers have producedbear out the results of goodleadership. There is still time to remedythe situation. It seemslike a no-brainer to me. Noreason has ever been givenas to why this decision tonot extend Mr. Martin’scontract was made. Could itbe there’s not one, outsideof a personal agenda onthe part of one man? That, indeed, is a thought andcommentary on a schooldistrict if it is the case.I encourage the schoolboard to step up to theplate and do what is right.Do what is fair for the kids, right for the teachers andright for the community ofChico. Decatur, Texas, Wednesday, March 6, 2013 ALL AROUND WISE • A PART OF THE WISE COUNTY MESSENGER 13Coffee grounds won’t boost plant performanceBY NEIL SPERRYDear Neil: I work in a coffeeshop, and I can take all thegrounds I want home when Ieave. Are they of much valuen my garden? They won’t hurt, but theyrobably won’t make a hugeifference in your plants’ perormance. The best way tomend any garden soil is todd several inches of a mix ofvarious types of organic mater(sphagnum peat moss, comost, finely ground pine barkulch, rotted manure, etc.).Your coffee grounds would fitnto that mix, but only in cominationwith the other types.Dear Neil: Do you have anypruning guidelines for some xeiscapeplants that were plantedseveral years ago? Whennd how? The plants includerape myrtles, roses, vitex, alhaea,Gold Star Esperanzasnd Gulf Stream nandinas.Any pruning you might doo those plants needs to benished before new growthegins in the spring. I’ve anweredyour question in theame week that it was sent,ut note that it’s already laterhan you ought to be pruningor a couple of these plants.Trim crape myrtles only toemove unwanted side andottom shoots. Never “top”rape myrtles for any purportdreason — there is no validxcuse, no matter what othersay try to tell you.Bush roses, includingnockouts, are trimmed byalf before new growth shows, ach cut made just above anutward-facing bud.Vitex are pruned primarlyas needed to shape theirrowth, as are althaeas. Noegular pruning is required.Trim Esperanzas as neededo shape, also to remove dam-RICK’S METALRECYCLING3280 S Hwy 101 • Bridgeport, TX940-683-3770• #1 Short Iron $220/ Ton• Long Iron $190/Ton• Tin $190/Tonaged wood. Thetrimmed stems will send outnew sprouts down low, keepingthe plants full and compact.Would it endanger the life ofa 40-year-old pecan tree if I removedas many as 25 percentof its branches? They hangover our house, and I’m concernedabout limbs breakingduring storms. You’ll want to have a certifiedarborist involved in thiswork to be sure that it’s donesafely and correctly. That personwill also have the advantageof seeing each branch andits relative risk to your home.It might be that cabling overhangingbranches back intoother strong branches couldminimize the likelihood of anytype of problem. The arboristcould show you the options.I have a very similar situationliterally hanging overour house, and I had one 14-inch branch that wasn’t neededfor shade removed a yearago. I will have additionalbranches cabled if and whenit becomes necessary. Hopethat helps. Get a pro there tostand alongside you.Dear Neil: We have a smalllive oak in our front yard. While it’scertainly not something thatyou want to see happening,it doesn’t present any immediatedanger to the tree. Thebird isn’t hearing insects andpecking to find them. Sapsuckers(relatives of woodpeckers)revisit trees to consume sapthat flows from these spots. The best way to protectthe tree would be to wrap itstrunk with a quality papertree wrap from a full-servicenursery or hardware store.Wrap it from the ground up tothe lowest branches. That willdeter any further pecking, asthe tree heals these openings.Once the tree has more bark, this won’t be an issue.ASSESSING BREASTCANCER RISKDear Neil: I kept my bougainvilleain the garage overthe winter, and now it has lostmost of its leaves. Trim it onlyas needed to reshape it, andgradually reintroduce it tosunnier conditions as springreturns. Time will tell, but itwill probably need a bit of patiencebefore it will be showyonce again.Next winter, if you opt tokeep it again, you might wantto find a bright spot in an indoorwindow area, or perhapsconstruct a small greenhousefor it and your other tropicals.Or, of course, start with a new888.487.0036A number of recent studies point out the value of having regularmammograms. When women consult with their doctors about whetherand how often to have mammograms, they should consider severalimportant factors, including age (most aggressive cancers occur inwomen 55 and older); genetic makeup (up to ten percent of breastcancers are inherited, often from mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2genes); family history (having a female family member with breastcancer increases the risk); cancer history (women with cancer in onebreast are 3-4 times more likely to develop it again in the same orother breast); breast density (denser breasts are more prone to breastcancer); and hormone use (combined hormone therapy increasesbreast cancer risk). The most effective ways to detect breast cancer are throughmammography and a breast exam by your doctor. It is also importantthat you perform breast self-exams, especially if you are at a higherrisk, and report any lumps or abnormalities to your doctor. Several of itsmain trunks have now diedback. The plant isn’t very attractive. What have I donewrong?Perhaps nothing. That’s notabnormal for wax myrtles inmany parts of Texas, especiallyunder dry and very hotconditions. The plants lookgood for a few years, but theygradually start to fail, trunkby-trunk,branch-by-branch.The farther west you go inTexas, the more this occurs.I normally suggest that peopleenjoy plants they alreadyhave as long as they can, butthen not replace them withmore wax myrtles, opting insteadfor something like yaupons, abelias, elaeagnus orother more durable types.Have a question you’d likeNeil to consider?
