Repeat with the backh<strong>and</strong> groundstroke.• With the ball in h<strong>and</strong>, students drop, bounce, <strong>and</strong> strike a ball upward <strong>and</strong> to themselveswith a foreh<strong>and</strong> groundstroke; they then let the ball bounce before trying to strike itupward again with a foreh<strong>and</strong> groundstroke. Repeat using the backh<strong>and</strong> groundstroke.Encourage students to continuously self-rally for as many strikes as possible while movingsafely within their own space.VARIATIONSLess Challenging• Allow students to use their non-dominanth<strong>and</strong> to help racquet catch the ballon their racquets.• Allow students to drop the ball froma higher point.• Allow students to have a partner drop theball for them.• Allow students to let the ball bouncemore than once between strikes.READY TO PLAYACTIVITY: Record BreakersMore Challenging• Encourage students to drop the ball fromtheir racquets rather than from theirnon-dominant h<strong>and</strong>.• Encourage students to allow only onebounce between strikes.• Encourage students to alternate betweenforeh<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> backh<strong>and</strong> groundstrokes.• Encourage students to repeat theexercise, striking the ball upward withoutletting it bounce in between strikes(i.e., a volley).KEY CUES“Keep your wrist firm.”“Keep your body sideways to your target.”“Keep the ball in front of your body.”LESSON 5• In a small space with a partner, students drop, bounce, <strong>and</strong> strike a ball with an upwardforeh<strong>and</strong> groundstroke. The partner allows the ball to bounce <strong>and</strong> then strikes it upward witha foreh<strong>and</strong> groundstroke.
