LESSON PLANS <strong>GRADES</strong> 1-2 | TENNIS FOR SCHOOLS <strong>Learn</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Play</strong> 15LESSON 1<strong>GRADES</strong> 1 – 2Lesson outcome:Students will be able to hold a racquet <strong>and</strong> guide a ball.Game goal:Students should be able to play the game Follow the Leader. To besuccessful at Follow the Leader, students will need to be able to guidea ball in various directions <strong>and</strong> pathways while following a partner.GETTING READYLESSON 1ACTIVITY: Racquet Awareness• Place the racquets at the net, <strong>and</strong> instruct the students to st<strong>and</strong> on the baseline. Workingwith partners, the first student in each pair runs to the net, picks up a racquet, returns tothe baseline, <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s the racquet to her partner. The partner returns the racquet to thenet. Repeat several times.• Partners with a single racquet st<strong>and</strong> back to back <strong>and</strong> pass the racquet to one another bytwisting from side to side. Repeat the exercise while requiring students to pass the racquetbetween their legs <strong>and</strong> over their heads.VARIATIONSLess Challenging• Allow students to set the racquets downin front of their partners (rather thanh<strong>and</strong>ing the racquets to one other).More Challenging• Encourage students to pick up the racquetwith one h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> transfer it to the otherh<strong>and</strong> while running.• Encourage students to pick up <strong>and</strong> passtwo racquets to one another (rather thanonly one).• Encourage students to pass <strong>and</strong> receivethe racquet while touching only certainracquet parts (e.g., head, grip).• Encourage students to run forwardor backward or shuffle sideways.
