— Most Worshipful Brother Jerry D. Moss, Grand Master“FreemasonsLighting the Way”What an honor it is to serve as Grand Master. To travelthis Grand Jurisdiction and meet the fine people that makeup this organization is a pleasure that defies explaining. We areover half way through our workshops, as I write this. Theyhave been well received and attendance has been good. Theprogram presented has gone over well and the Freemasonsthat presented it are doing a great job. There are two areas that I would like to lift up. Those arethe veterans and our youth. There is no doubt in my mindthat without the sacrifice of our veterans we would not beable to stand and enjoy the freedoms as a nation that we havetoday. We owe them a lot. I also feel that to preserve ourstandards as a society, we must invest in our youth. It’s reallyquiet simple: we owe the veterans for what we have today, and we have an obligation to develop our youth fortomorrow. To that end, we will create a Veterans Committee madeof Freemasons who will make themselves available to counseland aid the veterans in our society. We will work togetherwith the Masonic Service Association to accomplish this goal.To help and assist the youth of this grand jurisdiction, Iwill ask each lodge to sponsor or co-sponsor a youthorganization. It needs to be understood that I am not talkingabout a one time situation or event, but a permanent situationsuch as DeMolay, Rainbow or Scouting. I prefer DeMolay orEugene Smith No. 279Rainbow because they are more or less dependent on us fortheir support. To help accomplish this, I have asked eachDistrict Worshipful Master to create a Youth Committee intheir respective district to assist the lodges in this effort. The Youth Council members and the state organizationswill make themselves available to assist in this endeavor. Icould go into many reasons for this program but I will sum itup by referring to the great light in Freemasonry and Proverbs22:6. It is our rule and guide.I’ll see you in my travels.Jerry D. MossGrand MasterMountain Park No 729In 1993, Jason Harmon was a young man and a memberof Mountain Park DeMolay. A very active young Mason,Jerry D. The Founding of the Scottish Rite: Bringing Order out of ChaosGary H. LeazerThe Scottish Rite is one of the two branches ofFreemasonry to which a Master Mason may proceed after hehas completed the three degrees of Symbolic or Blue LodgeMasonry. The other branch is known as the York Rite, consisting of Royal Arch Masons, Royal and Select Masters, and Knights Templar. The Scottish Rite includes the degreesfrom the 4° to the 32°.The use of the word “Scottish” has led many Masons tobelieve that the Rite originated in Scotland. There was also afalse belief which persisted for many years that a man had togo to Scotland to receive the 33°. Neither of these statementsis true.Few records exist concerning the first two decades ofMasonic history after its so-called “Revival” when four lodgesin London organized the Grand Lodge of England. Somepre-1717 Masons are said to have fabricated certain degreesfor the purpose of carrying out their political ends, includingclaims that persons such as King James II of England hadbeen initiated into higherMasonic degrees. There are records oflodges conferring the degreeof “Scots Master” or “ScotchMaster” as early as 1733. Alodge at Temple Bar inLondon is the earliest suchlodge on record. Other lodges include a lodge at Bath in 1735,and the French lodge, St. George de l’Observance No. 49 atConvent Garden in 1736. The references to these fewoccasions indicate that these were special meetings held forthe purpose of performing unusual ceremonies, probably byvisiting Freemasons. The short-lived Masonic Chapter ofClermont, named “Clermont” in honor of the French GrandMaster, Louis de Bourbon, Comte de Clermont (1709–1771)was a Masonic body that controlled a few high degrees, namelyseven, during its brief existence beginning in 1754. ThePhilosophic Scotch Rite was established in Paris in 1774.Actually, the first reference to the Rite appears in oldFrench records where the word “Ecossais,” meaning Scottish,is found. During the latter part of the 17th Century, i. e., the1600s, when the British Isles were torn by strife, many Scotsfled to France and resumed their Masonic interests in thatcountry. It is believed by many historians that this influencecontributed to the use of the word “Scottish.” Another theory, supported by Rex Hutchens, Past Grand Master of Arizonaand a respected Masonic author, believes the term “Scottish”was selected because of the romantic appeal of the KnightsTemplar and the tradition they fled from France to Scotland. 1In 1732, the first “Ecossais” or Scottish Lodge, was18 / February 2012“They were a remarkable group of men. One thingespecially impressed me; between the eleven founders nota single piece of evidence indicates the slightest dissensionbetween them. Everything indicates the closest friendshipexisted between all of them.”organized in Bordeaux, one of the oldest and most influentialMasonic centers in France. The membership included Scottishand English Masons. The years 1738-40 saw the formation ofthe first “Hauts Grades” or higher degrees, which were addedto the three degrees of the symbolic lodge. In 1761, the GrandLodge of France and certain other Masonic authorities (theEmperors of the East and West) in France granted a patent toStephen Morin of Bordeaux to carry the advanced degreesacross the sea to the Americas. In 1763, Morin establishedthese degrees in the French possessions in the West Indies. What he established consisted of a system of 25 so-calledhigher degrees which flourished in France, and which wereknown as the “Rite of Perfection.”“While there is no record of the total number of bodiesof the Rite of Perfection in this country before 1801, Masonicscholars know of eight, three of which were located inCharleston and five of which were ‘dark’ in 1801.” 2Within a few years after 1763, other degrees were added, until the Rite had a ritualstructure of 33 degrees, thefirst three being exemplifiedin a Symbolic Lodge, if aGrand Lodge with subordinateLodges existed in thearea. In 1767, Henry Francken, who had been deputized by Morin, organized a Lodge ofPerfection in Albany, New York. Called the Ineffable Lodgeof Perfection, it ceased activity on December 5, 1774. Thisrite was the fore runner of what was to become the Ancientand Accepted Scottish Rite in the United States, the northernrite. During the Colonial Period, other deputies, appointed byMorin, organized Masonic groups which conferred theadvanced degrees at other important points along the Atlanticseaboard, including Charleston, South Carolina. These groupswere independent and without centralized supervision orcontrol; however, they all agreed that their authority came fromStephen Morin in Jamaica in the West Indies.A Loge de Parfaits d’ Écosse was formed on April 12,1764 at New Orleans, becoming the first high degree lodgeon the North American continent. Its life, however, was short,as the Treaty of Paris in 1763 ceded New Orleans to Spain, and the Catholic Spanish crown had been historically hostileto Freemasonry. Documented Masonic activity ceased for atime and did not return to New Orleans until the 1790s. NewOrleans returned to French control in 1800 and all of theLouisiana Purchase was sold to the United States in 1803.The organization of the Scottish Rite as we know it todaytook a huge step forward with the Grand Constitutions of 1786.

According to some Masonic scholars, including Albert Pike, this document was drawn up in Berlin with the approval ofFrederick the Great, King of Prussia. 3 Other scholars are notso sure – and we may never know for certain.Col. John Mitchell of Charleston was appointed DeputyInspector General in 1795. He became Sovereign GrandInspector the following year. He would become one of theeleven gentlemen of Charleston who organized the SupremeCouncil of the Thirty-third degree for the United States ofAmerica — the first Scottish Rite Supreme Council in 1801.Its aim was to unify competing groups and to bring Masonicorder out of chaos.Sign erected by The Supreme Council at the site of theorganization of The Supreme Council Charleston in 1801.On May 31, 1801, Col. Mitchell and Dr. Frederick Dalcho,a Charleston physician, met at a building at the corner ofChurch and Broad Street. (The Southern Jurisdiction has placeda marker at the corner.) This is a strong tradition, but there isno contemporary evidence or documentation to prove this.No minutes of this first meeting exist so we do not knowwho was present. The building, now gone, was well knownfor its Masonic meetings; the first symbolic lodge in Charlestonwas organized in the building. For the two, one of the first orders of business was tofind qualified prospective leaders to expand the SupremeCouncil to its constitutional limits. It took a number of monthsto select Masons for the Supreme Council which wasestablished at the meeting on May 31. The full membershipof this Supreme Council consisted of 11 Grand InspectorsGeneral. The first Mason chosen for the Supreme Council wasAbraham Alexander, Rabbi of the Congregation Beth Elohim. The next person selected was Emanuel De La Motta, aSephardic or Spanish rite Jew from St. Croix (now known asthe Virgin Islands). He was an active member of Beth ElohimSynagogue. Next was Major Thomas Bartholomew Bowen,an Irishman who came to America prior to the Revolutionand who served with Pennsylvania units during the war. IsraelDe Lieben, born in Prague, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic)was selected next. An active member of Beth ElohimSynagogue, he was highly regarded by his Masonic colleaguesand was made a Sovereign Grand Inspector General by theSupreme Council. Dr. Isaac Auld, one of only two of theeleven born in the United States, was selected next on 10January 1802. He and Dr. Dalcho had a number of mutualinterests and together, they established Charleston’s BotanicalGardens. The eighth and ninth members were Le Comte AlexandreFrancois Auguste de Grasse and Jean Baptiste MarieDelahogue, who were related by marriage. The two Frenchmenwere members of the Loge la Candeur in Charleston, a lodge“composed exclusively of French Roman Catholics.” 4A Polish Jew, Moses Levy was selected to be a member ofthe Supreme Council in May 1802. Three months later, Dr.James Moultrie was the last selected.Of these 11, nine were born abroad and only BrothersIsaac Auld and James Moultrie were born in the United States.Moultrie was the only one born in South Carolina. In religion, four were Jews, five were Protestants, and two were RomanCatholics.Ray Baker Harris, author of The Eleven Gentlemen ofCharleston, wrote, “They were a remarkable group of men. Onething especially impressed me; between the eleven foundersnot a single piece of evidence indicates the slightest dissensionbetween them. Everything indicates the closest friendshipexisted between all of them.” 5(Endnotes)1William L. Traveling Men Chapter No. 19, also known as The SteelGoat Riders, composed of Masons in or around the 12 thDistrict was presented their Charter on Saturday January 14.The purpose of this organization shall be to bring togetherEditor’s Confession: I borrowed this fine article from Cochran Lodge’sTrestle Board — without permission.2011 has been a good year for me and I hope it has beenfor everyone else as well. 2011 has also been a good year forCochran Lodge No. 217. We sailed straight and true. We didn’tget way laid by storms. We ended the year better than we beganand that’s a good thing. It seems all the once a year holidays arecoming around a little faster now for some reason. I just gotlast year’s Christmas taken care of and this year’s Christmas isalready here. So quick, so quick. Most of the things I plannedto have done by the end of this year are still there on the list butthat’s OK. I would rather have a list of things to do than to betwiddling my thumbs, looking for something to do. It doesn’tbother me as much when things don’t go my way or happen asfast as I want them to anymore. That’s life; I just suck it up andmove on. As the years go by I’m starting to see this older manlooking back at me in the mirror and I wonder who this guy is.I still want to do all that I have always done but this face in themirror seems to be changing right before my eyes. The word “time” is becoming more and more prevalent.Sometimes I look in the mirror and I wonder how much time Ihave left. Will I be able to finish the race without spinning outor hitting the wall? Will I be able to get all the things done Iwant to before my time is up? I wonder. Very seldom are wecontent with time. It either goes by too fast or too slow. Thebad times seem to drag on forever and the good times are gonein the blink of an eye only to leave us with our memories thatwe regret or cherish. The reality is we have a very limited amountof time on this earth to work and rest, to laugh and cry. If wesurvive the gauntlet of adolescence, if we don’t have an accidentor catch some dreadful disease then we are truly blessed. We have to figure out how to enjoythe good times in moderation. For a little too much of eitherand everything just falls apart. We are born into this world to alife time of choices and the consequences there of. When mytime is up I would like my epitaph to be simply the truth.Hopefully something of quality. The real question is how I canachieve this. How can I accomplish this goal? I hope to find theanswers through my faith in God and Freemasonry. It reallydoes seem like yesterday that I was initiated, and was asked totake the chair of Junior Steward. “Good Men Made Better” Iwas told. Someone said say “good bye” to your family for thenext seven years. I found that not to be true, your family justgets a lot bigger and that’s a good thing. It doesn’t seem rightthat the possibility of occupying the Senior Warden’s chair isalready here. So quick, so quick. I don’t feel prepared or adequate.I can only resolve to do better, to offer help whenever andwherever it is needed and to receive help when it is offeredwithout being condescending.I have solid leadership at Cochran Lodge No. 217 to learnfrom and I will attempt to do so. Because of that leadership Ican’t help but to look at the upcoming year with promise andhope. The glass is half full not half empty. We are fraternallylinked forever and always. Together Peace and Harmony willcontinue in 2012. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Iheard some words of wisdom that a father gave a son the otherday. He told him, “Son, it don’t matter what you do in your life, just make it count for something.” If you think about it, countingusually means adding. If we are always adding to our life we willend it in the black and not in the red. Come to Lodge meetingsand add a plus to your life.

Wor. Bro. Barry J. Wiener, secretary and Past Master of FultonLodge No. 216, sent me this article from the Sandy Springs Reporternewspaper about Bro. Day. Wor. Bro. Wiener said he has been one ofBro. Day’s customers for 41 years. This story is used by permission ofMr. Joe Earle, Managing Edtior of the Sandy Springs Reporter, who wrote the article.Bro. Day is a 53-year member of Ducktown Lodge No. 572 andan honorary member of Sandy Springs Lodge No. 124.Charles Day can talk. Just ask him.“There’s not a barber alive who can tell more stories thanme,” he said. “I have a good memory and I remember themall.”And he tells them. He’s been telling them for years. The76-year-old Day has been bending ears while cutting hair inSandy Springs for half a century. And, thanks to his 41-yearcustomer and friend, lawyer Barry Wiener, Day now has proclamationsfrom the governor and the mayor of Sandy Springssaying so.“Fifty years, three weeks and four days in Sandy Springs,”Day said one recent afternoon. As he prepares to finally retire from his Sandy Springsbusiness, he’s proud of that milestone. “I’m the first person toever stay in business in this city for 50 years,” he said. “Thatwas my goal, to reach that.”His three-chair shop at 155 Hammond Drive NE may looklike it’s been around forever, with its red, white and blue spinningbarber pole, the sign out front promising “Hot LatherShaves” and the mounted deer head outfitted with a Christmasbulb serving as a Rudolph-red nose for the holidays, butit’s actually the third Sandy Springs shop he’s worked in. Heopened this shop in 1991, he said. Before that, he worked in ashopping center on Roswell Road. All along he’s been telling his customers the story of hislife. “I’ve heard his stories many times,” Wiener said. “It comeswith [a haircut]. No charge for the reminiscences of his growingup.”Day was born in north Fulton County, the son of a sharecropper, and has lived there throughout his life. “When I wasgrowing up, we moved from farm to farm,” he said. “We moved10 times. . . . I was nine years old before I ever went to Atlanta.. . . I saw a street car. I couldn’t believe people lived that closetogether.”As a young man, he tried working factory jobs and at theFulton County prison farm in Alpharetta, but work was hardto come by in a tough economy and difficult to keep. He hadjust been laid off from one job, he said, when he found hiscalling. He went to get a haircut at the barber shop in Alpharetta, and had to wait in line, he said. And another shop down thestreet had a line just as long.24 / February 201250 Years of Haircuts and StoriesBro. Charles E. Day Retires“I was there three hours and nine minutes,” he said. “Haircutswere $1 each and the barber did 20 haircuts while I wasthere. Thirty-three people came to the door and left. I got tothinking that Alpharetta could use another barber. He went to Sears and bought a home haircut kit, he said.He tried it out on his dad. Soon he was cutting his neighbors’hair and heading to barber college in Atlanta. He set up a littleone-chair shop outside his home in what is now Milton.Over a half-century in Sandy Springs, he’s seen a few thingschange. When he started out, Roswell Road was only two lanesand had only three traffic lights, he said. One light was in SandySprings, one was in Roswell and the third was in Alpharetta. Ittook him 30 minutes to get to work. Now he drives Ga. 400and it takes him 45 minutes or more.“I have said it would be a sad day unless they took me outof here with my toes turned up,” he said. “But I’ll be happynot to get on the 400 and not to have to clean up this shop.”Besides, he’s turning his business over to someone hetrained himself. Lam Tran stopped in his shop one day fiveyears ago when she saw a “help wanted” sign on the door. Sheworked at his side for five years. The 35-year-old, who wasborn in Vietnam, was scheduled to take over the business January1.“He taught me everything,” she said. “He taught me howto cut men’s hair and I owe him for that.”So what will Day do in retirement?Keep cutting hair, for one thing. He still has the one-chairshop outside his home and he figures he’ll continue to offerhaircuts one day a week at his home, just to keep his hand inand, no doubt, to make sure he has somebody to talk to.— Thanks are expressed to Mr. Joe Earle for allowing meto use this article in the Masonic Messenger.BOOKS AVAILABLE FROMGRAND SECRETARY’S OFFICEMasonic Manual Vol.I..............................................$7.00Masonic Manual Vol. II ............................................$10.00Masonic Code ........................................................$10.00Officers’ Planning Pack ...........................................$5.00“List of Georgia Lodges” ..........................................$5.00“From You to Me” ...................................................$5.00“Leaves from Georgia Masonry” ...............................$5.00“Books of the Book” ...............................................$5.00“Lodge System of Masonic Education” .....................$2.00“Investigation” ........................................................$2.00“Masonic Etiquette” ...............................................$2.00“W. Here is what one Scout did.Weeds grew throughout the abandoned ShilohCemetery, which dates from the 1850s, overtakingits many small, unmarked headstones, used to showwhere infants are buried.“You couldn’t see any of these stones,” ScoutIan Ramey said. “You could see the big stones andthat’s about it.”When Ramey saw the condition of thecemetery, he knew what he wanted to do for theproject he was required to complete in order tobecome an Eagle Scout.Ramey put together a 55-page plan showinghow he would complete the necessary work, whathe would need and what it would cost.Ramey brought other scouts to the one-acresite for 10 consecutive weekends. A total of morethan 400 hours put in by 18 scouts.Along with removing overgrown bushes toAt the open installation ofofficers at E. W. Theyinstalled two bluebird houses, painted the gate, built three benches for visitorsand performed a census of the more than 150 people buried at Shiloh between1856 and 2010.Bryan said the cemetery was once owned by Shiloh Baptist Church, butthe church has long since closed. While three people have been buried therein the past five years, he said all plots are sold.Ramey said the project cost $591 to complete, less than its $736 budget. He received a $150 donation from the Marietta Freemasons, since manyMasons are buried in the cemetery. Restaurants such as Chic-fil-A and IHOPalso helped out with free or discounted lunches. While he hopes that scouts will continue to help maintain the cemetery inthe future, Ramey, a Sprayberry High School senior, said he would like morefocus on other abandoned cemeteries.Helga Hong, who serves on the Cobb County Cemetery PreservationCommission, said, “Ian did a fantastic job.”On December 15, Ramey advanced to Eagle Scout after working at theBoy Scouts’ highest ranking for seven years. — Article from Marietta Journal.Ramey has received thanks from as far away as Canada.February 2012 / 25

If a Lodge has a member that is also a member ofthe Nat. Sojourners, or the Shrine Legion of Honor, thatBrother would make a good Representative from his lodgefor this Committee as he should be already used to the militaryprotocol. Otherwise, the Brother selected should be a veteran,if at all possible.Any Brother that that has a friend and identifies him as anon-Mason will steer this person to the Ga State CoordinatorMSA program, as this Committee’s purpose is to assist ANYVeteran, Mason and Non-Mason alike.Sub sections A thru E being self-explanatory, let’s discussthe last two. “Little did I know what I was getting into.”In December 1999 I was elected Worshipful Master ofFulton Lodge No. 216 and about two weeks later I was invitedby Brother Lon Goodman to accompany him to our MasonicHome in Macon to deliver toys to the children at the Home.Lon’s son, William, just a few years old, was with us thatevening. Little did I know what I was getting into. The experience was unbelievable. The look on thosechildren’s faces and the thanks they gave us was beyonddescription. That evening was Brother Lon’s third year ofdelivering gifts from Fulton Lodge to the children. Every yearat this time, Lon, the current Worshipful Master Elect ofFulton Lodge (Brother Michael Hickey this year) and I travelto Macon to bring some holiday joy to our Masonic childrenand I never fail to be amazed at the welcome that we receivefrom the children, the Grand Lodge Officers, and the MasonicHome Staff. One year, I noticed that a little girl was crying afterreceiving her gift. I asked her what was wrong and she repliedthat she “never knew that so many people loved me.” Wow,that hit me right in the heart and I then decided that I have toattend this event every year if invited.Jumping ahead to Thursday evening December 15, 2011,I realized that not only was it Lon’s sixteenth year of deliveringgifts from our Lodge, it was the thirteenth year that I havebeen privileged to accompany him to see the look of joy onthe children’s faces as they received the gifts from our Lodge.William (now 19 years old) was with us again and he told methat it was his thirteenth year also.Brethren, you have to be there to see the happiness weand the children feel every year when Fulton Lodge No. 216steps up to the plate at our Masonic Home.
