Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubCoaching - Youth ProgramsThe Club runs a variety of Learn to Sail and Learnto Race programmes each year, focused primarilyon 8-12 year olds with little or no sailingexperience. The courses are very popular, withthe 100 available places on the Learn to Sailprogramme filling almost 100% by word of mouth.Similarly we regularly had five to ten boats out atthe Club on Friday evenings as part of the Learnto Race programme.So far as the Learn to Sail Courses wereconcerned, we held four courses of five days eachduring the school holidays in September/Octoberand December/January run entirely with volunteerlabour from enthusiastic Club members. Followingthe success of last year with our youth sailorsleading some of the courses, this year ChloeJensen and Kat Wotherspoon stepped up to runone and Emma May and Catriona Glassockanother while stalwarts Chris Kelly and KenWilliams ran the other two. The feedback fromparticipants and students was extremely positivefor all four courses; so much so that we alreadyhave over 50 registrations for next season.Many thanks to the course leaders and also thosewho assisted, hopefully we’ve included all: CharlieGundy, Antoinette Radford, Jack Kelly, JamesGlassock, Finn Alexander, Jeremy Jones, CamGundy, Gael Glassock, Adam Swiderski, BillLusty, Emma Harrison, Tilly Lang, Alex Frohlich,Alexander Lewis, Ellie Breslin, Millie Moreton,Oliver Brini, Charlotte Alexander, Devlin Walsh,Henry Larkings, Lily Peel, Grace Armstrong, BazMoreton, Hanna Merchant, Jack Gerrie, JessicaTavener, Joel Perko-Marshall, Lisa Moran,Shannon Gallagher Silver, Tom Larkings, MaddieAyre, Zoe Moreton, Aaron Gage, Ed Breslin, JoeGhiazza, Michael Moran, Sophie Afaras, TomGerrie, Dana Tavener, Daniel Brini, Matt Este,Max Tatham, Zack Tatham, Claudia Thackray andMichael Moran. Ourthanks also go to Lindsay Marshall who has doneour junior instructor training session for a numberof years now.The Learn to Race programme follows on fromLearn to Sail, and allows interested sailors tocome to the Club for 7 or 8 Friday eveningsfollowing completion of the Learn to Sail courses.Essentially the idea is to give keen sailors moreDeveloping junior coaches is an important part of the Club’s Learn toSail programsopportunity to get on the water, but we alsointroduce them to basic racing concepts such asstarting sequences and elementary rules from theracing rules of sailing.These courses are run by Chris Kelly with lots ofsupport from Chris Walsh and others. Theyprovide a good opportunity for parents to meetand relax while watching their kids sail in anuncrowded river. Non Learn To Race kids alsocome down and sail or help after school knowingthat the ribs are out: an easy way to get on thewater.In May the club hosted a powerboat course run byformer club 12ft skiff sailor John Sanderson whichqualified the seven senior and thirteen youthmember participants for the Yachting AustraliaPowerboat Handling Certificate as well as theirNSW Maritime powerboat (or Young Adultpowerboat) licence where they did not alreadyhold it. Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubThe start of racing this week was postponed ashigh winds and generally rotten weather kepteveryone ashore. Racing started on the secondday, in challenging conditions. Jeremy Jones andBilly Lusty performed well that week, beingScratch winners in the Cherub Class. The weekwas viewed to be a great success by all sailorsfrom all the various Clubs, as Belmont alwaysdoes a great job, and this regatta is viewed asgood fun, and not full of the competitive angst thatis sometimes found at other junior regattas.New Support Boat ProjectJeremy Jones and Billy Lusty power their Cherub through the rain atCHSbefore the start of the new season. The course,while challenging, proved very popular and wasvery well received. Kids (and others!) who tookthe course benefitted greatly from the learningand skills training available.Jack Winning - LTS CoordinatorAustralian Secondary Schools Regatta (CHS)A healthy contingent of Sailors from Lane Covetravelled to Belmont this year to take part in theAnnual CHS regatta on Lake Macquarie. Always awell-attended event, this year there were 121registered boats before the regatta started, andthis swelled as beach entries arrived.Lane Cove Sailors used this opportunity to sailboats that they normally don’t during the season.Keen Sabot Sailors were seen out in Flying 11s,Flying 11 sailors were seen racing in their Flying11s, other Flying 11 sailors moved forward toCherubs, and Lane Cove even fielded a Tornadocatamaran and a 12ft Skiff in the event.At the Club’s Management Committee meetingheld 20 April 2009 it was resolved that a subcommitteecomprising James Francis, RichardGriffin, Ian Meggitt, Warwick Thomson, AndrewGlassock and Jack Winning be formed to identifyour needs and investigate the options and costs ofa boat to potentially replace the Clyde.This sub-committee identified in excess of 50criteria for the uses and type of boat required andthen set about searching for boats that cameclosest to meeting these criteria. Around $80,000was identified as an approximate cost to have anew boat equipped ready for use.We applied for a Sport & Recreation grant in 2010but were unsuccessful. We also applied for theextension of our Australian Sports FoundationProject, which had been successful in raising themoney necessary to fund the purchase of ourLearn to Sail boats, to cover Support Boats andEquipment. Rolf and Cathy Lunsmann lookedafter the administration of this fund.The Club Management Committee resolved that,subject to the approval of family, the new boatwould be named the Ted Griffith in recognition ofLearn to Sail expedition to Woodford BayThe Club now has a variety of boat types for a variety of roles.www.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 7
