Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubCherubsThe number of registered Cherubs for the 2011-12 season was up slightly from last season withseven registered boats. We had six boatsconsistently sailing each week throughout theseason.Two new sailing combinations joined the class,Philip Hartas and Ian Alexander sailing PocketRocket and joining us half way through theseason, John Mulquiny and Mark Gaucci sailingWrong Trousers.The standout performer for 2011-12 wasCauchemar sailed by Tim Harrington and ChrisHarrington, with a number of stand-in crews thathelped to secure the Club Championship title andFastest Time pointscore for the season.Cauchemar won four out of the five ClubChampionship heats. Chris Walsh and PaulBreslin sailing Electric Blue secured theHandicap Pointscore after a dramatic final racethat they went in to tied with Alchemy for thelead. A great finish saw them win the PointscoreTrophy by a narrow seven points fromCauchemar.The year began with Electric Blue being at thehigher end of the handicap board, but watchedthis drop as they consistently sailed each week tobe regularly placed in the top three on handicapeach week.As usual the Cherub racing calendar was full, with11 state heats being held up and down the coastfrom Queen’s Lake to Yarra Bay. Lane Covehosted Race 7 of the series with 22 boats on thestart line. The weather Gods showed us all theircolours. After a dash for cash from theclubhouse, we had rain and strong breezes tostart the race. All was looking good for a fastrace, until the breezes gave way to clear skiesand millpond like conditions to finish only a third ofthe fleet. The race proved to be all about skill andtactics.A huge thank you to all the classes for delayingtheir rigging and assisting in provisions forafternoon tea. Thank you also to Jack Winning forproviding the start boat for the day and long-timeTim and Chris Harrington in Cauchemar took out the CherubClub Championship.supporter, Alan Kenney for managing the stressesof starting the fleet.Six boats sailed under the Lane Cove banner forthe State titles. Alchemy sailed by Claire andRolf Lunsmann finished in fourth place, just threepoints shy of third place. Cauchemar sailed byTim and Chris Harrington finished in sixth.The 49th Australian Cherub Championship washeld at Yeppoon, Queensland. Claire Lunsmann,Rolf Lunsmann and Oliver Hartas made thejourney to be a part of the Regatta. ClaireLunsmann has done it again, successfullydefending her title for the Women’s Championshipwith Claire and Rolf coming in fifth overall for theevent and Oliver coming in eighth overall.Next year’s Cherub Nationals will be the 50thAnniversary series and will be held at Belmont16ft Sailing Club on Lake Macquarie. There isalready great interest in the landmark series, andthe anticipation of several boats and sailors thatwill come out of retirement especially for theevent! So if you are thinking of sailing Cherubs,next season is the one for you.On the home front this year, the competition justgot stronger and in many of the races the placeschanged constantly. Every boat improved as isseen in the way the trophies have been sharedout. Tim Harrington and Chris Harringtoncombined on Cauchemar to win both the ClubChampionship (on three points) and Fastest TimePointscore (on 171 points). They also finished avery close second in the Handicap Pointscore,missing out on a trifecta by just seven points.www.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 14

Although a late starterin the season, John Mulquiny and Mark Gauccishowed consistency and a keen spirit for Cherubsalso securing two of the handicap trophies.Although we won’t be seeing Kat much nextseason, whilst she is studying overseas, we hopeto see Chloe and a new skipper, together withJohn and Mark, continuing their fantastic efforts.Cherub Annual Handicap Pointscore winners Chris Walsh andPaul Breslin in Electric Blue.Have a great winter break, and get your boatstuned up to hit the water racing in 2012/13.Kate Hayward - Cherub Class SecretaryGaining second in the Fastest Time Pointscore,second in the Club Championship and third in theHandicap was the father daughter duo ofAlchemy, Claire and Rolf Lunsmann. PocketRocket was placed third in the ClubChampionship and third in Fastest TimePointscore.Keen from the outset, the stars weren’t aligned forJessica White and Kate Hayward, of Ralph whenJessica wound up in hospital with a brokencollarbone. Kate stepped in with a few differentcrews bringing back previous Club Championshipwinners, Ali Chapman and sibling Mark Hayward.Two of the unsung heroes in the Cherub fleetwere John Afaras and Max Gundy in Ajax. Whilstthey didn’t appear on the winner board, they put inan outstanding effort throughout the season. KatWotherspoon spent her first season in Cherubswith Chloe Jensen in Spoilers and showed greatdetermination and consistent improvement takingRunners-up in the Cherub Club Championship Claire andRolf Lunsmann in Alchemy.There was always drama on Spoilers with Kat Wotherspoon andChloe Jensen.Flying 11’sThis season saw the Flying 11 fleet bolstered by anumber of sailors stepping up from Sabots, EmmaHarrision and Ellie Breslin bought Luff Me Knotfrom Kat Wotherspoon who moved on to Cherubs,Hannah Merchant and Charlotte Alexander inMiss Elevation, James Pagett complemented hisSabot sailing at Drummoyne on Sundays bycrewing for Aaron Gage in Riddles, joining thefleet and setting a standard for all to attain wasGretta Quealy and Tom Smith in Decoy. Anotherstepping out of Sabots was Tom Larkings whoteamed up with Catriona Glassock in SevenMinutes to Midnight, Matt Este also joined thefleet recruiting the experienced Georgia Populinas crew, Jeremy Jones took the helm of his ownboat Snap! With yet another Sabot recruit DevlinWalsh in the bow.The first interclub race on the Flying 11Association calendar was the SprintChampionship held this season for the first time atNorthbridge Sailing Club, showing a cleanwww.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 15
