Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubThis was the last of my three year stint as OnWater Captain and I look forward to being ofassistance to my successor on the roster in 2012-2013.Richard ‘Griff’ Griffin - Club Captain On-WaterFacilities and MaintenanceOur Off Water Captain, Shane Tatham has been“spreading” himself around this year, organisingthe repair of slips, looking after the Club’splumbing, keeping Griff under control in theresponse boats, playing Santa and acting as siteforeman on the Woodford Bay pier refurbishmentproject. Shane with his offsider Kim Stewartorganised the cladding of a number of the timberand wooden piers under the Woodford Bay lasershed with help from over 20 laser members.Between a change in tides in late July they recladthe deteriorating piers using over 2 tonne ofconcrete. It was great to see so many unusedskills being applied to the task.Our Yacht Bay shed’s ramp has been decayingover the past few years with the timber bearersand decking slowly collapsing into the river. It wasdecided to replace the ramp and Ross Gage withhis trusty chain saw demolished most of theslipway in an afternoon’s work. Once a contractorhad been engaged to install the new frameworkan accomplished team of decking specialists,Murray Press and Rod King, quickly installed thenew ramp.Our trusty RUST (Retired and UnemployedSupport Team) group has worked diligently on anumber of important projects including the tablestorage cupboard, the ongoing installation of newsafety glass and painting of the George EdenRoom windows. The team has continued tomaintain all aspects of the Club from “tuckpointing” the mortar to water blasting the decksand ramps. Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubCLASS REPORTS12 foot SkiffsThe number of registered boats slightly reduced to15 for the season, although unfortunately thenumber of boats that actually competed at somestage was a total of 12. The average number ofcompetitors was six, and ranged from as few asthree and up to nine. Once more the adage that tohave a chance at accumulating enough points towin the pointscore you need to compete in all theraces, which was again proven as Vantage RealEstate (Jack Winning and Brett Phillips)competed in all races that counted and so won theHandicap Pointscore for the David “Big Kite”Stephens Memorial Trophy.Although no one could complain that it is gettingboring, again the Club Championship was takenout by Gemmell Sails (Murray Press and BenGemmell). This was achieved via three wins(although due to a dancing related injury toMurray – now known as ‘twinkle toes’, the finalheat win required the contribution from son Nick).Second was Lincoln Crowne (Jonathan Templeand Richard Jones) who were quite consistent inWill Oxby and Ian Goodman on PennyLisstheir results and third was Skӧll (Peter Polec andJamie McCrudden) who had some variableresults, ranging from two non-finishes to a wininvolving being the only boat to finish within therace time limit. Unfortunately there were half theregistered boats that didn’t compete in enoughraces to qualify for the Club Championship finalplacings. The Fastest Time Pointscore for theHindsight II Trophy was also again won byGemmell Sails, with Skӧll placed second some33 points behind and third was Vantage RealEstate.The Interdominion Silasec Trophy series returnedto Auckland this season, after the great successof our hosting of it in 2011. Unfortunately due tounavailability of some crews, contributed to by theevent commencing rather early on 30 December,only four boats were sent from Australia. The twoboats that attended from Lane Cove involvedsome different crew combinations, beingWinners of the Dave “Big Kite” Stephens Memorial Trophy for the12ft Skiff Handicap Pointscore Jack Winning and Brett Phillips inVantage Real EstateSkoll sailed by Peter Polec and Jamie McCrudden third overall inthe Club Championship.www.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 11
