Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubCommunication with MembersTwo hardcopy newsletters were issued throughoutthe season, the first to coincide with the upcomingstart of the season, the second to facilitate therelease of the annual program. In addition tothese, a number of email updates were sent toMembers and supporters who had provided anemail address for distribution through the Club’swebsite.MembershipIan Meggitt and the Air HostessesBeginning last season, Yachting Australiarestructured its membership fee such that allmembers of our Club (excluding thoseparticipating in ‘Learn To Sail’ activities butincluding Life Members) were required to be afinancial member of YA at a direct cost of $35each. The fee, based on last season’smembership, was required to be paid in advance. As we had no alternative but to pass this cost toour members, clearly it caused many to re-thinktheir situation and, despite the increase in LTSparticipation, it resulted in a substantial drop inmembership. This LastSeason SeasonLife Members 14 13Senior Members 74 101Associate Members 22 84Youth Members 77 70Sub-total 187 268Learn to Sail 96 84Total 283 352Whilst many Members also donated time andmoney to the Club, there were an additional 83community minded Supporters who also did so.This year our Supporters have been individuallylisted along with Members elsewhere in thisreport.Throughout the season, many of the ClassSecretaries also regularly communicated by emailwith their fleets to provide regular updatesincluding details of race results, class specificnews, reminders of upcoming inter-club regattasand a preview of weekend racing. The Club now even has a Facebook page, whichis much “liked” by the F11 sailors:http://www.facebook.com/LC12ftSSCSkills ProgramsIn March the Club engaged John Sanderson, aqualified Boat Master, to run a course for up to 20members so that they could gain both their NSWboat license and Power Boat Handling Certificatefrom Yachting Australia. This course complemented the RSA course thatwas held earlier in the year and this along with thePower Boat Handling Course will ensure that theClub has properly trained Members to ensure thesafe and effective running of our operations.Social ProgramsLane Cove has always prided itself on enjoying anactive and healthy social program to complementthe Club’s Sailing activities. The 2011-12 seasonproved no different with a varied number ofactivities taking place, targeted at many differentClub members.Despite the above concerns, the continued strongnumbers in the Club’s Junior Programmesremains one of our greatest strengths, providing astrong foundation for the future.Ian Meggitt - Treasurerwww.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 4

Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubCoaching - Youth ProgramsThe Club runs a variety of Learn to Sail and Learnto Race programmes each year, focused primarilyon 8-12 year olds with little or no sailingexperience. The courses are very popular, withthe 100 available places on the Learn to Sailprogramme filling almost 100% by word of mouth.Similarly we regularly had five to ten boats out atthe Club on Friday evenings as part of the Learnto Race programme. So far as the Learn to Sail Courses wereconcerned, we held four courses of five days eachduring the school holidays in September/Octoberand December/January run entirely with volunteerlabour from enthusiastic Club members. Followingthe success of last year with our youth sailorsleading some of the courses, this year ChloeJensen and Kat Wotherspoon stepped up to runone and Emma May and Catriona Glassockanother while stalwarts Chris Kelly and KenWilliams ran the other two. The feedback fromparticipants and students was extremely positivefor all four courses; so much so that we alreadyhave over 50 registrations for next season. Many thanks to the course leaders and also thosewho assisted, hopefully we’ve included all: CharlieGundy, Antoinette Radford, Jack Kelly, JamesGlassock, Finn Alexander, Jeremy Jones, CamGundy, Gael Glassock, Adam Swiderski, BillLusty, Emma Harrison, Tilly Lang, Alex Frohlich,Alexander Lewis, Ellie Breslin, Millie Moreton,Oliver Brini, Charlotte Alexander, Devlin Walsh,Henry Larkings, Lily Peel, Grace Armstrong, BazMoreton, Hanna Merchant, Jack Gerrie, JessicaTavener, Joel Perko-Marshall, Lisa Moran,Shannon Gallagher Silver, Tom Larkings, MaddieAyre, Zoe Moreton, Aaron Gage, Ed Breslin, JoeGhiazza, Michael Moran, Sophie Afaras, TomGerrie, Dana Tavener, Daniel Brini, Matt Este,Max Tatham, Zack Tatham, Claudia Thackray andMichael Moran. Special thanks to Ray Gerrie andSusan Chambers for their help and all the parentsand grandparents who gave up some time. Ourthanks also go to Lindsay Marshall who has doneour junior instructor training session for a numberof years now.The Learn to Race programme follows on fromLearn to Sail, and allows interested sailors tocome to the Club for 7 or 8 Friday eveningsfollowing completion of the Learn to Sail courses.Essentially the idea is to give keen sailors moreDeveloping junior coaches is an important part of the Club’s Learn toSail programsopportunity to get on the water, but we alsointroduce them to basic racing concepts such asstarting sequences and elementary rules from theracing rules of sailing. These courses are run by Chris Kelly with lots ofsupport from Chris Walsh and others. Theyprovide a good opportunity for parents to meetand relax while watching their kids sail in anuncrowded river. Non Learn To Race kids alsocome down and sail or help after school knowingthat the ribs are out: an easy way to get on thewater. In May the club hosted a powerboat course run byformer club 12ft skiff sailor John Sanderson whichqualified the seven senior and thirteen youthmember participants for the Yachting AustraliaPowerboat Handling Certificate as well as theirNSW Maritime powerboat (or Young Adultpowerboat) licence where they did not alreadyhold it. A similar course is scheduled to be heldHelp was always on hand when neededwww.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 6

Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubThe start of racing this week was postponed ashigh winds and generally rotten weather kepteveryone ashore. Racing started on the secondday, in challenging conditions. Jeremy Jones andBilly Lusty performed well that week, beingScratch winners in the Cherub Class. The weekwas viewed to be a great success by all sailorsfrom all the various Clubs, as Belmont alwaysdoes a great job, and this regatta is viewed asgood fun, and not full of the competitive angst thatis sometimes found at other junior regattas.New Support Boat ProjectJeremy Jones and Billy Lusty power their Cherub through the rain atCHSbefore the start of the new season. The course, while challenging, proved very popular and wasvery well received. Kids (and others!) who tookthe course benefitted greatly from the learningand skills training available.Jack Winning - LTS CoordinatorAustralian Secondary Schools Regatta (CHS)A healthy contingent of Sailors from Lane Covetravelled to Belmont this year to take part in theAnnual CHS regatta on Lake Macquarie. Always awell-attended event, this year there were 121registered boats before the regatta started, andthis swelled as beach entries arrived.Lane Cove Sailors used this opportunity to sailboats that they normally don’t during the season.Keen Sabot Sailors were seen out in Flying 11s,Flying 11 sailors were seen racing in their Flying11s, other Flying 11 sailors moved forward toCherubs, and Lane Cove even fielded a Tornadocatamaran and a 12ft Skiff in the event. At the Club’s Management Committee meetingheld 20 April 2009 it was resolved that a subcommitteecomprising James Francis, RichardGriffin, Ian Meggitt, Warwick Thomson, AndrewGlassock and Jack Winning be formed to identifyour needs and investigate the options and costs ofa boat to potentially replace the Clyde. This sub-committee identified in excess of 50criteria for the uses and type of boat required andthen set about searching for boats that cameclosest to meeting these criteria. Around $80,000was identified as an approximate cost to have anew boat equipped ready for use.We applied for a Sport & Recreation grant in 2010but were unsuccessful. We also applied for theextension of our Australian Sports FoundationProject, which had been successful in raising themoney necessary to fund the purchase of ourLearn to Sail boats, to cover Support Boats andEquipment. Rolf and Cathy Lunsmann lookedafter the administration of this fund. The Club Management Committee resolved that, subject to the approval of family, the new boatwould be named the Ted Griffith in recognition ofLearn to Sail expedition to Woodford BayThe Club now has a variety of boat types for a variety of roles.www.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 7

the contribution Ted had made to the club over alifetime, including his vision to rebuild theclubhouse, extend the slipway and build thewestern shed and change rooms in the early1970s.Richard Griffin was driving the boat search andleft no stone unturned, the committee looked atmany on the internet and in the water and tested anumber of different brands and models. Of allthese, the Arvor 20 was the pick, however, it stillhad a number of shortcomings that prevented itfrom being the perfect boat for our purposes.Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubIn July 2009 James Francis resigned from thecommittee and was replaced by Max Gundy. The opportunity to source a purpose built boatarose and after much deliberation it was decidedto pursue this option. This then put us into thedesign phase which took considerably longer thananticipated, probably because we wanted all thefeatures of a boat 12 metres in length in one of sixThe Club Committee thanks the Australian SportsFoundation for their support with this project andacknowledges the support of the following donors:Mark BarracloughMichael BartleyPeter BehrWendy BhindiCarolyn BiggsSue & Eric CantorRichard ChapmanMarcus CollignonBeth and Ray DawkinsRobert DruryWilliam EdmondsonJohn GallagherKen GilkesGriffin FamilyDavid GriffithJohn GriffithsGundy FamilyTim HarringtonCorinna and PhilipHartasJohn HuntGail and Geoff IsaacsJorgen JensenBob KornmanRichard KornmanFred (Ted) LilleyGeoff LucasNikolas MargerrisonSue and RichardMcCaugheyMichelle McGrathJane and Ian MeggittArnold MetcalfHelen MolesworthRobert PatonBrett PhilipsKris RomuldJohn StephensonWarwick ThomsonWinning FamilyDavid Griffith and Helen Molesworthmetres. On 14 October 2010 wesigned a contract for the supply of a purpose builtboat with the proviso that if it did not meet certaincriteria including 30 days on-water testing, wewere not obliged to proceed. expectations and under the circumstances thesupplier was not prepared to supply the Club.Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubFollowing this decision the sub-committee met, reviewed options available and proceeded withthe purchase of an Arvor 20 Series III. Deliverywas taken on 17 February 2012 and an officialnaming ceremony was held on 30 March 2012when over 100 donors, club members, and LaneCove Councillors enjoyed drinks and canapés atthe clubhouse to celebrate the occasion. Ted’sdaughter Robyn officially named the new boatwhile son David filled us in with some of thefamily’s long history of association with the Club. The fundraising through the Australian SportsFoundation was well supported by club sailorsand supporters past and present, however, particular mention should be made and thanksgiven to our major donor Ms Helen Molesworthwhose generosity made this whole projectpossible with minimal effect on club finances. The name Molesworth is synonymous with LaneCove and with sailing. Helen sailed at the Club in12ft skiffs in the Ace and Viking with her brothersBruce and David between 1935-45.On Water OperationsGreat anticipation of the arrival of our new fastresponse boat during the 2011-2012 season, afterthe planning and development over the previoustwo years, was the highlight of the season for theResponse volunteers and myself. However, inFebruary this year, a misfortune in the eventualityof the custom built boat, caused the ClubCommittee to switch back to the only othersuitable boat available in Australia, the Arvor 20.Well equipped, well trained and ready to go.It is also fortunate that we have gathered togethersuch an enthusiastic, dedicated and capable teamof volunteers operating these boats to offer a‘safety net’ available to our sailors when criticalcircumstances arise. To the ‘harbour‘ boat crewsand to the parents who ensure the safety of ourJunior fleet sailors, we all owe a very big ‘Thanksfor being there!’It is hoped that those who might still be availablewill continue to serve with more who would like tojoin in and learn ‘the ropes’, ticking the box on themembership form when renewing next season. There have been very few hiccups with thereliability of boat motors and equipment this pastseason and normal servicing during winter willhave them all ready to go again for anotherseason in 2012-13.The VHF radio communication trialled last seasonwas in use in parallel with the 27MHz andprovided excellent communication between boatsand the Club-based operators, Claudette Ronesand Al Kenney. Thank you both from all of us.With much fanfare and excitement, this boat wasnamed the ‘Ted Griffith’ and joined the responsefleet at a Club ceremony at the end of March2012. Our thanks go to James and Peter Francisfor their efforts in the interest of the Club and ourmembers. This Club and its sailing members are veryfortunate, thanks mainly to the considerabledonations provided by members past and present,to be able to field a fleet of support boats greaterin ratio per racing boat than any other club west ofthe bridge and, with the exception of major yachtclubs, than possibly any in Sydney.A dedicated team of volunteers provided exceptional support to all theClub’s on-water activities.www.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 9

Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubThis was the last of my three year stint as OnWater Captain and I look forward to being ofassistance to my successor on the roster in 2012-2013.Richard ‘Griff’ Griffin - Club Captain On-WaterFacilities and MaintenanceOur Off Water Captain, Shane Tatham has been“spreading” himself around this year, organisingthe repair of slips, looking after the Club’splumbing, keeping Griff under control in theresponse boats, playing Santa and acting as siteforeman on the Woodford Bay pier refurbishmentproject. Shane with his offsider Kim Stewartorganised the cladding of a number of the timberand wooden piers under the Woodford Bay lasershed with help from over 20 laser members.Between a change in tides in late July they recladthe deteriorating piers using over 2 tonne ofconcrete. It was great to see so many unusedskills being applied to the task. Our Yacht Bay shed’s ramp has been decayingover the past few years with the timber bearersand decking slowly collapsing into the river. It wasdecided to replace the ramp and Ross Gage withhis trusty chain saw demolished most of theslipway in an afternoon’s work. Once a contractorhad been engaged to install the new frameworkan accomplished team of decking specialists,Murray Press and Rod King, quickly installed thenew ramp. Our trusty RUST (Retired and UnemployedSupport Team) group has worked diligently on anumber of important projects including the tablestorage cupboard, the ongoing installation of newsafety glass and painting of the George EdenRoom windows. The team has continued tomaintain all aspects of the Club from “tuckpointing” the mortar to water blasting the decksand ramps. If you are free on a Wednesdayplease give Jack Winning or John Hayward a calland you can join a friendly bunch that enjoy agourmet lunch and a good chat while undertakinga few odd jobs around the Club.John Hayward - Vice CommodoreJack Winning - RUST ConvenorStandard Rig Laser Club Champion David Rosenthall on Imp.www.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 10

Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubCLASS REPORTS12 foot SkiffsThe number of registered boats slightly reduced to15 for the season, although unfortunately thenumber of boats that actually competed at somestage was a total of 12. The average number ofcompetitors was six, and ranged from as few asthree and up to nine. Once more the adage that tohave a chance at accumulating enough points towin the pointscore you need to compete in all theraces, which was again proven as Vantage RealEstate (Jack Winning and Brett Phillips)competed in all races that counted and so won theHandicap Pointscore for the David “Big Kite”Stephens Memorial Trophy.Although no one could complain that it is gettingboring, again the Club Championship was takenout by Gemmell Sails (Murray Press and BenGemmell). This was achieved via three wins(although due to a dancing related injury toMurray – now known as ‘twinkle toes’, the finalheat win required the contribution from son Nick).Second was Lincoln Crowne (Jonathan Templeand Richard Jones) who were quite consistent inWill Oxby and Ian Goodman on PennyLisstheir results and third was Skӧll (Peter Polec andJamie McCrudden) who had some variableresults, ranging from two non-finishes to a wininvolving being the only boat to finish within therace time limit. Unfortunately there were half theregistered boats that didn’t compete in enoughraces to qualify for the Club Championship finalplacings. The Fastest Time Pointscore for theHindsight II Trophy was also again won byGemmell Sails, with Skӧll placed second some33 points behind and third was Vantage RealEstate. The Interdominion Silasec Trophy series returnedto Auckland this season, after the great successof our hosting of it in 2011. Unfortunately due tounavailability of some crews, contributed to by theevent commencing rather early on 30 December, only four boats were sent from Australia. The twoboats that attended from Lane Cove involvedsome different crew combinations, beingWinners of the Dave “Big Kite” Stephens Memorial Trophy for the12ft Skiff Handicap Pointscore Jack Winning and Brett Phillips inVantage Real EstateSkoll sailed by Peter Polec and Jamie McCrudden third overall inthe Club Championship.www.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 11

Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubLasersLincoln Crown sailed by Jonathan Temple and Richard Jones tookhome seven handicap trophies and were runners-up in the ClubChampionship. Those Lasers keep on coming. Despite someregulars not managing their usual quota of sailingthis season a robust fleet featuring 25 skipperscrossed the starting line during the season andnumbers for next season are looking good.David Rosenthall sailing Imp (this must be his30th boat named Imp!) must be congratulated forfinally winning the standard rig clubchampionship five years after last beingsuccessful – he captured all three major trophiesthat year. This year he also picked up thestandard rig fastest time pointscore. Well doneDavid.Gemmell Sails (lent to Nick Press and AndrewStevenson) and PennyLiss (Will Oxby and GlennFarquhar). The change of boat and crewobviously didn’t faze Nick Press too much as heand Andrew won the 52nd Silasec Trophy, withthis being Nick’s remarkable third win in a row.PennyLiss, although only managing 12th overall, came very close in the handicap point score witha second in the Jack Winning Handicap Trophy.Other notable Interclub results across the seasonwere:State Champion: Dimension PolyantUpper Harbour Champion: Gemmell SailsVariety Port Jackson Champion:Gemmell SailsThe final event for the year was the AustralianChampionships at Easter in Sydney, held atWoollahra Sailing Club and this was notable forthe placings of Lane Cove boats:Second:Third:Fifth:Gemmell SailsLincoln CrowneSkӧllChris Sacre on Back to Square One leads Rob Drury on Sprat. The Radial Club Championship has seen achanging of the guard with James Stewart sailingHarvey taking the title for the first time along withthe Radial fastest time pointscore. With Radialsnow comprising fifty percent of competitors theclass has become more competitive for everyone.Tony Mulhearn on Thira III captured theStandard’s Handicap Pointscore and Kim Stewarton Makani retained the Radial version to extendhis streak to three seasons in a row.It was certainly a good sign of things to come withthe return of Dave Lusty to steer the Hood after afew years layoff and show that the sailing memorycan still work. Also there is encouragement of newblood coming into the class as the old Vantage IIchanged hands with Cam Gundy and MaccaPaton sailing it for the last few races of theseason, putting in a very creditable performancesboth in Club races and at the Nationals. We canonly hope that for the next season we will get afew more boats consistently on the water.Glenn Farquhar - 12ft Skiff Class SecretaryKim Stewart on Makini won the Radial rig Handicap Pointscore.www.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 12

Our thanks go to Peter Francisfor donating Back to Square One.It’s always close racing in the Laser fleetIt cannot go without notice that the major prizewinners were also the most frequent sailors overthe season, they put the effort in. Great sailingfrom all of them.Despite only sailing in five races MarkBarraclough on Exclamation (get it?) picked upfour trophies, John Hunt on Jayvee three trophiesfrom nine starts and Julian Moran on Viaquathree from ten starts. Strong sailing from thisgroup! Two newcomers from Riverview CollegeTheodore Lewis on Riverview 2 and MatthewChegwyn on Doctor’s Orders joined the fleet thisyear, and we had occasional visits from GraceArmstrong on Spotto, Cam Gundy on Jokers andClowns, Vicki Kornman on Victim and Noel Borelon Tooezy. Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubCherubsThe number of registered Cherubs for the 2011-12 season was up slightly from last season withseven registered boats. We had six boatsconsistently sailing each week throughout theseason. Two new sailing combinations joined the class,Philip Hartas and Ian Alexander sailing PocketRocket and joining us half way through theseason, John Mulquiny and Mark Gaucci sailingWrong Trousers. The standout performer for 2011-12 wasCauchemar sailed by Tim Harrington and ChrisHarrington, with a number of stand-in crews thathelped to secure the Club Championship title andFastest Time pointscore for the season.Cauchemar won four out of the five ClubChampionship heats. Chris Walsh and PaulBreslin sailing Electric Blue secured theHandicap Pointscore after a dramatic final racethat they went in to tied with Alchemy for thelead. A great finish saw them win the PointscoreTrophy by a narrow seven points fromCauchemar. The year began with Electric Blue being at thehigher end of the handicap board, but watchedthis drop as they consistently sailed each week tobe regularly placed in the top three on handicapeach week.As usual the Cherub racing calendar was full, with11 state heats being held up and down the coastfrom Queen’s Lake to Yarra Bay. Lane Covehosted Race 7 of the series with 22 boats on thestart line. The weather Gods showed us all theircolours. After a dash for cash from theclubhouse, we had rain and strong breezes tostart the race. All was looking good for a fastrace, until the breezes gave way to clear skiesand millpond like conditions to finish only a third ofthe fleet. The race proved to be all about skill andtactics.A huge thank you to all the classes for delayingtheir rigging and assisting in provisions forafternoon tea. Thank you also to Jack Winning forproviding the start boat for the day and long-timeTim and Chris Harrington in Cauchemar took out the CherubClub Championship.supporter, Alan Kenney for managing the stressesof starting the fleet.Six boats sailed under the Lane Cove banner forthe State titles. Alchemy sailed by Claire andRolf Lunsmann finished in fourth place, just threepoints shy of third place. Cauchemar sailed byTim and Chris Harrington finished in sixth. The 49th Australian Cherub Championship washeld at Yeppoon, Queensland. Claire Lunsmann,Rolf Lunsmann and Oliver Hartas made thejourney to be a part of the Regatta. ClaireLunsmann has done it again, successfullydefending her title for the Women’s Championshipwith Claire and Rolf coming in fifth overall for theevent and Oliver coming in eighth overall.Next year’s Cherub Nationals will be the 50thAnniversary series and will be held at Belmont16ft Sailing Club on Lake Macquarie. There isalready great interest in the landmark series, andthe anticipation of several boats and sailors thatwill come out of retirement especially for theevent! So if you are thinking of sailing Cherubs, next season is the one for you.On the home front this year, the competition justgot stronger and in many of the races the placeschanged constantly. Every boat improved as isseen in the way the trophies have been sharedout. Tim Harrington and Chris Harringtoncombined on Cauchemar to win both the ClubChampionship (on three points) and Fastest TimePointscore (on 171 points). They also finished avery close second in the Handicap Pointscore, missing out on a trifecta by just seven points.www.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 14

Although a late starterin the season, John Mulquiny and Mark Gauccishowed consistency and a keen spirit for Cherubsalso securing two of the handicap trophies.Although we won’t be seeing Kat much nextseason, whilst she is studying overseas, we hopeto see Chloe and a new skipper, together withJohn and Mark, continuing their fantastic efforts.Cherub Annual Handicap Pointscore winners Chris Walsh andPaul Breslin in Electric Blue.Have a great winter break, and get your boatstuned up to hit the water racing in 2012/13.Kate Hayward - Cherub Class SecretaryGaining second in the Fastest Time Pointscore, second in the Club Championship and third in theHandicap was the father daughter duo ofAlchemy, Claire and Rolf Lunsmann. Due to fleet sizesof about 90 boats the Association this year brokethe fleet into 4 flights who raced each other inround robin format. This is to allow venues whocannot fit a 100 boat starting line in their race areato be able to hold rounds of the States in years tocome.PRO Col Chidgey had both extremes of raceweather to deal with over the first round. OnSaturday the wind was tardy to arrive. When itdid, it was very light and shifty, enabling only twoof three scheduled flights to be the held. OnSunday, a 20kt, gusting to over 25 kt, southerlyarrived on the scene resulting in quite a bit ofcarnage and again shortening the race program totwo flights of racing. 'Survival mode' was the tacticfor the final flight of the day, with 18 boatsrecorded as not starting after being battered in thefirst race, another 22 started but did not finish thefinal race due to multiple capsizes in more than 25kts and rain. Racing was abandoned after theday's second race when lightning was sighted.Sail Sydney was opened up to other than Olympicclasses this season. Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubJunior FleetThe juniors had another great year on the river, with some close racing, good times and greatcamaraderie. One particular feature was theimprovement shown by a number of junior sailorsas the year progressed; finishes got closer andcloser as the year progressed and nothingshowed this more clearly than the final clubchampionship race where the first three boatsfinished within 18 seconds of each other aftermore than an hour and a half of exciting racing inchanging conditions. As ever, the junior sailors were helpful andfriendly, and this made running the class apleasure. It was also very pleasing to haveparents helping each race day and with theadministration of the class. A special thanks toDavid Swadling for running the pointscore spreadsheet and to Margaret Glassock for her efforts inrunning the starts and the finishes. The weather was generally good, although it gotblowy a couple of times at the Friday eveningLearn to Race program, where quite a few of ourbeginners became familiar with capsize retrievaltechniques. We had quite a few sailors join thefleet from the Learn to Sail and Learn to Raceprograms and many of them acquitted themselvesvery well; Chanel Lai, Lachlan Cozzie, JamiesonBennetts, Lucy Lilley, Charles Lilley, Joe Ghiazzaamongst others fell into this category. As in preceding years, the Learn to Sail programran in October, December and January and wasvery well attended. We had wonderful assistancefrom parents and junior and senior sailors andalso Flying 11 and Cherub sailors including EmmaMay, Catriona Glassock, Chloe Jensen and KatWotherspoon who ran courses with greatSabot 2 Up Club Champions Henry Larkings and Eve Peel inGone in 60 SecondsSabot 1 Up Club Champion Gael Glassock in Babesuccess. Again, the weather was generally kind(possibly too kind!?). Thanks also – as ever - toJack Winning, who always does whatever isrequired to get kids on the water and organisesthe learn to sail program. The juniors demand much of the starters and theadministration function at the club. A big thankyou therefore needs to go to all who helped inthese areas. Lots of parents got out on the ribsand helped throughout the year; thanks to allthose parents too and to all of the others whohelped the juniors with the Learn to Sail programand the Learn to Race program. Thank you alsoto all of those who donated trophies – without yourhelp much of this wouldn’t happen. The juniors made a big effort to collect books foraboriginal kids on Palm Island. We sent six boxesof high quality kids’ books for young and earlyteen kids as part of a literacy initiative.Somewhere, even as you read this, there may bea kid in the tropics reading a book someone atLane Cove donated. The numbers for juniors this year increasednotably; everyone was again racing in Sabots. The fleet varied each week from five or six boatsto as many as 17; with the bigger fleets generallyout for the Club Championship races, of whichthere were five. Courses were generally set for aSydney summer nor’easter – a beat up the river toOnions Point, a reach across to the wing mark atWoodford Bay, a run down the river to theAlexandra Street mark and then another beat, reach and run before finally finishing. There wasmore harbour racing this year and the kids gotoutside the river a couple of times where theyacquitted themselves very well in the areabetween Greenwich, Cockatoo Island andwww.LC12ftSSC.org.au Page 19

Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff ClubWoolwich. These races were popular and helpedthe kids get some experience of differentconditions. It is likely there’ll be more harbourraces in future seasons.Club Champion in the Sabot 1 ups this year wasGael Glassock in Babe, who dominated over fiveraces and dropped only 3 points, taking a 2nd inthe final race on 24 March, but otherwise winningthe other four. Gael wins the D Lamprecht PeeWee Mk IV Trophy. A very close second in all ofthese races bar the last (which he had to sit outwith a cold ...) was twin brother James Glassockin Oink Oink !! who finished on 12 points after thedrop. Watching the racing between Gael andJames was very interesting, with James oftengetting out to a good start only to be slowly andpatiently run down by Gael as racing progressedup and down the river. Adam Swiderski in TookYa Time showed great improvement throughoutthe season to win the final Club Championshiprace from Gael by a matter of seconds and thuscome third overall in the club championship with19.4 points. There was some very close competition in theSabot 2 up Club Championship between eventualwinners Henry Larkings and Eve Peel in Gone in60 Seconds and Miles Davey and ArchieSwadling in Freestyler. In the end the final raceproved decisive with the win for Henry and Eveallowing them to edge out Miles and Archie bythree points, 5.7 to 8.7. Third place went toAndrea Davey and Jessica Swadling in Synergy(replacing Ad Power after the Nationals) withsome very fine sailing over the year netting them20.1 points after the drop. The Sabot 1 up Fastest Time Pointscore wastaken out by Gael Glassock with 182 points, forwhich Gael wins the Iron Ring Trophy. BrotherJames came second with 160 points and AdamSwiderski third with 115. Adam took out the Sabot1 up Handicap Pointscore with a total of 279points from James on 224 and Gael on 222. Wehad some really keen and committed sailors in theSabot 1 up class this year; girls and boys whoturned out week after week to sail. Ed Breslin inPiranha, Lisa Moran in Meteorite, MadeleineAyre in Sundowner and Billy Moran in HighCalibre in particular deserve special mention forgetting out there, getting wet, and having somefun every week. Noteworthy additions to the Sabot1 up fleet later in the season were Jack Moran inEvolution and Jack Kelly in Maximum Force, each sailing 1 up after they ran out of things totalk about in the 2 up races.Ed Breslin piloting PiranhaThe Sabot 2 up Fastest Time Pointscore for theIron Ring Trophy was won by Miles Davey andArchie Swadling in Freestyler with 262 points.Henry Larkings and Eve Peel in Gone in 60Seconds came second on 152 points. Third wasAndrea Davey and Jessica Swadling in Synergyon 132 points. The Meggs Trophy is awarded to the sailors (1 upand 2 up) who end the season with the mostnumber of starts (not necessarily finishes) inHandicap Pointscore races and who have not wonanother trophy. This year’s winners are:1 up: James Glassock in Oink Oink !!2 up: Michael Afaras and Oliver Knight inInsanity Fair.Lachlan Cozzie and Jamieson Bennetts in the Club SabotMeggsCongratulations to all our winners andcongratulations also to all of the kids who got outthere and gave it a go.
